Since Mebh accidentally turned her into a wolf walker, Robyn has been made into a member of her pack. The roll of "alphas" in wolf packs are actually that of a protective parental pair, not the "big tough wolf beat down all other rivals" like what was initially believed. Mol quickly shifting from snarling to motherly when realizing Mebh had turned her is a great way of representing that.

Meh’bs mother is amazing, the way she peaks acts and the shadows they tell a tale by themselves. She talks so fast and yet figures out that she is a wolfwalker that her daughter did it and sounds like a worried mother all at the same time, the shadow when you first see her is massive showing that even in a cage she is the leader of the pack, and it gets more sketchy and weaker as she tells mave that they have to go. It’s just beautiful

I always think its funny, historically, Werewolfs, wolfwalkers etc, were the good guys. Several French coat of arms show the werewolf reared in defense of the crown. There are stories of "the holy wolf", tales of werewolves who have saved children when their families were overthrown, raised them, then returned with them to retake their thrones/homes. but something happened around 1300 AD, something happened with the church.. All of a sudden, the knights Templar are to be hunted down and killed, the Spanish inquisition, the 100 year war, The Great Schism, and France fights for control of the church, Church placed a bounty on wolves, with many dukes paying good money for any killed on behalf of the church. Not sure what happened where... but eish.

Some stories said werewolves were a blessing from god. others a punishment, to allow them to redeem themselves... Where someone did something that was an a front to gods creations, they would take the form of a wolf or other animal, and have to prove themselves to win back their humanity.

I like that this film frames its fictional version of Oliver Cromwell as someone who's clearly a chauvinistic puritanical bastard but also has a humble and compassionate side to him that allows you to think he could conceivably be the hero of his own story. He thinks he needs to stay to solve a problem that he and his predecessors in English governance caused I.e. the unrest in Ireland. He thinks the wolves are the source of the unrest in this town specifically so he wants to tame the wolves to allay peoples fears, which means he is willing to try a diplomatic approach but will also respond with the most brutal violence if his will is not obeyed. This, as far as I have learned in my history courses is probably accurate to the real Cromwell so big props to the writers.

Oliver Cromwell was a cruel religious extremist who brought absolute suffering to Ireland - carrying out a Genocide against the Irish. The war against Ireland was his doing. He killed the King of England & then decided to wage a war in Ireland. It was his war & his decision. All of the blood in Ireland lies on his hands. He carried out a genocide. I don’t understand how anyone could see Oliver Cromwell as ‘diplomatic’ I’ve head justifications that “he would sometimes offer to let people live if they surrendered” Well, a modern day example of that is happening in Ukraine. Russia’s Putin offered to peace only if Ukrainians surrendered to the Russian invasion - Putin will only stop the bloodshed when Ukraine accepts being occupied by Russia. How the fuck is that diplomatic?! Of course they will defend themselves & not surrender to an invasion! 1649 Ireland were defending themselves against an invasion, war & ethnic cleansing left native Irish population 83% decreased, their whole country was crippled by the English & effectively everyone was left in poverty for hundreds of years - leading to the Great Famine in 1845 - the cause of the famine was not a plant disease, but England's long-running political hegemony over Ireland The Parliamentarian campaign in Ireland was the most ruthless of the Civil War period. In particular, Cromwell's actions at Drogheda and Wexford earned him a reputation for cruelty. He set fire to buildings & churches where civilians & soldiers alike were taking shelter - he burned people alive. Cromwell's critics point to his response to a plea by Catholic Bishops to the Irish Catholic people to resist him in which he states that although his intention was not to "massacre, banish and destroy the Catholic inhabitants", if they did resist "I hope to be free from the misery and desolation, blood and ruin that shall befall them, and shall rejoice to exercise the utmost severity against them" His actions were brutal & the wars lead to the death of 15-50% Irish population, which then lead to the famines which killed 1 million+ Estimates of the drop in the Irish population resulting from the Parliamentarian campaign reach as high as 83 percent - Cromwells forces carried out ethnic cleansing, pillaging towns and forcing Catholics from their land.

As much as I think of Cromwell as a dictator, he certainly was an abnormality of his time, being how progressive he was in terms of religious plurality and and enfranchisement of all men. (Not women this was still 1650). So I have sort of a love hate relationship with him. Since he basically pressed for the “American values” over a hundred years before the constitution was ratified. (And yes I know the Oranje Republic was first)

Not his fault, flintlocks of that day and age are smooth-bore, low-powered (by comparison to modern pistols), and generally inaccurate even at the best of times.

Not to mention that the end of the barrel was more of a horn shape than a continuous hole, adding to the bloom problem. The only ones with (at the time) accurate weapons are the Goodfellows (their crossbows, which aren't cheap if bought and would take some serious time and practice to make one). Even then, there are stories of the arrow or bolt slipping out of their place in the crossbow, nor any iron sights equipped, thus making it harder to use. Goodfellow should not be holding it pointing down if he wants to keep the arrow from falling.

This guy definitely reminds me of Frollo, but while Frollo was self-loathing and blamed everyone but himself for his own actions, our villain here seems to just straight up think all of his actions are immediately justified. I'm pious (because I say so) --> I'm always right --> therefore everything I do is pious and right! Let's go kill people!" Also from an artistic standpoint these shots emphasize the great use of differing styles for the humans (straight lines and rigid structure) vs the wolves and their forest with their rougher lines and curves.

Ireland. The film is set in Kilkenny Ireland 1650.
