It's more about convenience than price. Most people don't think to have their cars oil changed until the reminder light comes on then they freak out and pull into the closet shop just to make it go away. Yes I said most since there are people out there who do the correct thing and watch their miles and schedule service when they are due.

As a Retired Mechanic of 48 years I’ll tell you that the best place to get your car serviced is a reputable 1 or 2 man shop. They have skin in the game and will provide better service than a large shop with a Manager and mechanics. Having an actual mechanic service your vehicle they will usually inspect it for problems that these oil change kids and/or flunkies would never see.

@@geraldscott4302 Right, yeah. A few models are super tight on the space around the filter. Only thing I'd think other than what you've got going is if it would be possible to use the spanner/pincher type, given if its 2 grips had enough spatial sweet spot to play with -- if so, probably just enough to loosen it to get to hand tight. If it's THAT squeezed, you can't even get a good hand grip, often, though. You'd think on something as big as a MGM, they could do better. We always joked at the garage about their doing stuff like that so customers would bring it to them. Torn off too many crushed filters to count.

@@marthajean50 The front end of the MGM was redesigned in 2003. It got rack and pinion steering, and the steering rack is in the way of getting to the oil filter. Maybe a few know something but the vast majority don’t know anything about cars. I didn’t work for take 5 but I did work for a similar company and can tell you it’s not even a requirement to have automotive knowledge to get hired. I actually did apply to take 5 and the manager actually told me she thought I was over qualified to work there and I didn’t get hired. These companies pay so little that no one with automotive experience wants to work there. At the company I worked for we all got paid 8 bucks an hour that’s 75 cents more than minimum wage to be working on peoples cars that are what gets them back and worth from work. The only reason places like this even exist is because people are too lazy to do it themselves. Changing oil is by far the easiest thing to do on a car.

@@roninthedestroyer8958 I’m very much the same (taught by my old man). I’ll buy a filter and oil, keep the receipt, and then I’ll log the change mileage in a notepad. I used to do the first couple free oil changes at the dealer until I saw on the documentation that they weren’t using the synthetic oil that I had requested. That’s probably a moot point now that everything is mostly synthetic, but I was young and naive at that point in my life. It was a good lesson, and fortunately, it didn’t turn into a costly disaster.

My 2024 Toyota Corolla comes with "free" maintenance, but I chose (as I do with all of my cars) to do it myself. I know it was done not in a rush, with the right oil filter and the right oil. I did the first oil and filter change at 2937 miles, well under the recommended 10k that Toyota states (supposedly 5k for severe service). The week after I did, the dealership where I purchased the car called me and wanted me to bring it in for the "free 5k mile inspection". When I told the woman that I already changed the oil and filter, she said, "Oh no, it's just for tire rotation and fluid top off". That's when I told them, "You delivered the vehicle to me without any washer fluid (which I made them reimburse me for), and you want to touch it again? Go pound sand. If and when it needs warranty work, it's going somewhere else". That ended that chat. I'm glad I do my own work.

@@Naldo_S1K That was the factory fill oil and it was actually quite dirty at 2900 miles. The Corolla uses 0W-8. Could it have gone 5k miles? Sure. The good rule of thumb is 6 months and 5k miles for a modern Toyota. That works out to mostly twice a year for most folks.

Why would you take your fancy German car to a quick service oil change place? These type of places don’t even carry the oil for German cars. They don’t carry any filters or anything. At the place I worked at every time a Mercedes or bmw came in we would always have to run to an auto parts store just to get the filter and oil to even be able to do it. Also German cars are very notorious for being difficult to work on. They have skid plates with 20 screws on them that you have to take off just to get to the filter. A lot of places will see all that work and not even do it and still charge you. Don’t ever take a foreign car to a place like this.
