Family and friends of an Osprey woman who was hit and killed by a Sarasota County deputy as she rode her bicycle home from her job at Walmart are trying to cope with her loss as the Florida Highway Patrol investigates the crash.

30+ years ago, I was hit on the same stretch of frontage road areas (while riding my bike to and from work) twice in a few months. Both drivers sped off. Fun times, baby. 💪😎✌️ Humanity sure is classy!

I've been nearly hit on the sidewalk, too, on a number of occasions by drivers who don't feel the need to check that the sidewalks and crosswalks are clear as they are making a turn or pulling out of a driveway. Being on the sidewalk isn't a magic bullet.

If you ride your bike on the road, all the same traffic laws apply ! I get so aggravated at those who don't signal, don't stop, don't let pedestrians cross , use the pedestrian crosswalk, etc etc. And those recumbant bikes should be outlawed !! The Amish in our town are the only ones who pay any attention to the laws. They have my respect and my thanks. Sorry for the rant, but it is a huge problem here !! If this happened to any of us we would be sitting in jail. Did they preform any field sobriety test on the officer. If you work in construction and have an accident the first thing they do is drug test you. Did they drug test this officer or do officers get special treatment. Why do we hold a garbage truck driver to a higher standard than our police. I ride a e-bike. Most of my small town is 30 mph. My bike will do 30 mph even though Class 3 bike is limited to 28 mph(it should be at least 30). When I ride in a 30 mph zone, most people want to do 35 or 40 and are riding my tire and gives me no other option to ride the 2 foot cement shoulder too let them pass. Yes there is bicyclist that think they own the road going way under the limit and slowing down traffic. It seem to me that most cars think I own the road even if I am doing speed limit. I have a bright motorcycle light, tail light and blinking red lights, rear mirror and still worried I will get hit because of so much distracted /drunk driving.

Even pre-war Europe had a strong cycling attitude which continues to this day. of course, the American oil, gas, rubber and automobile industries killed mass transit and also frown on bicycling as it does not enrich them. Read the story of National City Lines, the largest transportation system in the country that was bought out by Firestone and GM then shut down. Yeah, people really need to follow the traffic rules even if you are on a bike. I see people going against the traffic lights and stop signs often in my area. I was driving to work last night and some kids with no reflective vest or flashing lights front and back where playing on the road with their bikes. Sad what happened to this lady but you have to follow the rules. Rules, crossing lights, and stop signs are there for a reason.
