We've raised a couple hundred of these little ones. Naturally, we lost some along the way but the successful ones have gone on to make plenty of cute babies just like this little guy. Some of our girls would even bring their babies to show them off.
@HighlanderNorth16 ай бұрын
Seems like these 2 babies may have been released with no visible shelter to use, unless they provided them with a small home that just wasn't shown in the video. Do they know how to forage for food and building materials to craft a home with?
@zexnynex7776 ай бұрын
When people say we shouldnt mess with nature and help these creatures i think they might not have noticed the 100yrs of urban sprawl we live in now. Nature has been "messed with" for years, follow your heart ❤
@tothelighthouse98436 ай бұрын
@@HighlanderNorth1 Many people release squirrels with a home, but it's not necessary. They may quickly leave the area where you released them anyway if it's the territory of more dominant squirrels. Their nest-building skill is instinctual, as is foraging. WHEN they're released is important tho--not too early, not too late, haha! 4 months or older is an optimal age, but if it's already late Sept you may want to wait & release them the following spring/summer. Releasing too late in the year means they don't have time to build shelter or store food reserves.

@@HighlanderNorth1 I'm not sure. But we gave our squirrels hammocks and handmade wooden boxes to practice nesting, and they were transferred from indoor tanks to outdoor release cages to get them use to the sounds and the weather patterns. We usually released them at nearby parks, where they and their descendants have flourished for years.

Squirrels are such adorable animals, and can be very friendly too. There used to be a blonde squirrel who came up to my house every day and would take nuts very gently out of my hand and she made her way into the hearts of nearly everyone in the neighborhood. Sadly she died a few years ago from a huge abscess on her mouth. RIP Blondie

An absolutely beautiful video to start off the morning. My grandma found a baby squirrel that fell out of the tree and broke his leg and nursed him back to health! He kept coming in through the dog door every now and then so she made a whole house for him inside 😂😂 it was so great seeing him laying inside his little space when we came over..great times

Once they unfortunately lose their mother while still young the first living thing they set their eyes on, they imprint onto you. I had two squirrels do this. As soon as they seen my little brother Julian (Who passed away a week ago RIP❤) then me, they became very attached. If we tried to leave they would cry with that high pitched screeching or they would chase us then attach themselves to us. They were so cute.

Squirrels choose you. You don't choose them. This baby lost its mamma. What a precious little squirrel so affectionate 🥰
@tothelighthouse98436 ай бұрын
If you see a young squirrel on the ground, it's very likely the mother will come get him/her. T. Leave the baby where it is, keep pets away, & just keep an eye on the little one from a safe distance. If it's particularly cold or wet weather you can provide little one with a warm blanket or box (with blanket). A gently warm--not hot!--hot water bottle with a blanket on top will help them retain body heat. Best not to handle little one, but if you absolutely have to, that's ok--it's not true that a Mama will not take in her baby again if it smells like humans. NOT TRUE. Generally the only reason a Mama will abandon her baby is if it's injured or sick. There are situations where baby squirrels will need extra help: if it's particularly young (esp eyes closed) & Mom isn't showing up; if it approaches you, which is often a sign the mother has abandoned it; or if you can see it appears sick or injured. If over time the mother doesn't return, the most important steps are to get little one warm, & call a wildlife rehabber asap. Hopefully they can take the young squirrel for rehab, & give you instructions in the meantime. Don't try to give them food or water right away, especially if they're cold.

OK, that made me laugh! I also did that for my cats, had a contractor cut a door through the sheet rock, set up a cat pole for them to drop down into an enclosed room on the back deck. They could then go outside 24/7 and be safe. All the litter boxes got out of the house too, a bonus!!

I'm actually surprised they didn't allow them some practice in a tree or similar environment before releasing them into the wild. They would've naturally had some of that practice if they'd grown up with their mom in the wild, right? It just seems like an odd choice, I guess. Squirrels are definitely cute, though, lol.

When I lived in NYC, I would go to Central Park every day for lunch. I always had trail mix, grapes, and an apple with different sandwiches. Well, I noticed that my grapes especially would come up missing, and I thought at first that I was eating them too fast. After about the fourth time at the same location. I noticed that one squirrel kept sneaking grapes. One I noticed, I brought extras. He or she became my little friend.
