We need to do more to help the mentally ill, this was a psychotic episode, a lot of these incidents seem to be related to mental illness and alcohol abuse than actually being malicious criminals (well, some of the alcohol abusers are malicious but also addicts). As someone trying to become a cop myself these videos give me a lot of context as to what to expect, and I think being calm and collected is the key to success in that job.

It is a crazy cycle that we in the US can't seem to solve. We have less than 5% of the world's population and more than 25% of the prison population. I see people get so mad on these video comments (even me sometimes) when a criminal gets let out with a fine or small punishment. But we can't just keep jailing people. And we can't just throw the mentally ill to the wolves, so to speak. The clearly can't take care of themselves on the street, except for the higher functioning ones. I just get frustrated that I don't know what the answer is, and nobody else seems to either.

Officer Beesly was awesome, even keeping her composure when the lady was calling her names. She probably just realized that lady was mentally ill and just chose to de-escalate to what extent she could. I live in Arizona. I don't think the police are horrible here, but I also don't think they're at the level of the La Crosse police department.

This is a psychotic manic episode. She demonstrated textbook behaviors including word salad, rhymed words that have no context, total disorganization, and other findings. What I saw here was a super obvious diagnosis. Regardless of the cause of her mania, she was not in her right mind. Hopefully she was eventually transferred to a hospital where she would’ve been placed on a psychiatric hold and received treatment. Officers did a fantastic job with her!
