I've had box turtles in my yard for 46 yrs. They have personalities too. I raise them n release when they can fend for themselves. My oldest is over 50 yrs old. Merlin has1 nostril n cracks, Gurly is missing a foot, Ms.Vee is missing a V in her shell, Star is dwarfed, etc. The healthy grow to adults and are released. They are kept in a natural area outside. This is such a great story. Many years ago I wasgiven a small turtle by a friend, like the ones off the side of the road, it was smaller than a quarter. I took it home and went to the pet store to get supplies. Later I did research and ditched the liver shaped plastic pool from the store. I named him Frank. I got a 25 gallon tank and lots of upgrades. He grew larger but his shell started to turn a weird color. I took him to the vet and was told he had shell rot. I wasn’t using the right lights. I was told it would be expensive to fix him d most ppl just toss them in a pond or whatever. I payed for treatment and got a 50 gallon tank that day. Also lots of proper lights and other things the vet recommended. Frank is now 10 inches in shell. Has his own outdoor (man made) pond. I think he is happy. I love 🐢 what more can I say.

@@samg873sorry I don’t remember the cream and don’t have the bottle anymore. It was a long while ago. It was a silver something. The vet also injected some stuff into Frank. I assume for comfort and an antibiotic. It took a while to heal. Slow and steady. There was also a crack that healed uneven, but Frank and I didn’t care. Chicks dig scars. He’s my oldest and suns with my dogs on the lawn. So I thank the vet and Frank for being so strong.

Years ago back around the mid-90’s, me and neighborhood friend came across turtle with cracked shell just sitting there on the side of the road by the curb. My friend didn’t think it would survive and we ended up just leaving him there. 😔 of course, I felt bad about it. But I was just a young teen back then and also thought there was nothing that we could’ve done for him. And now looking at this there was obviously something that we or I could’ve done to help him. If I could go back in time I would definitely save that poor turtle by helping to tape his shell cracked up.

@@CalmoOmlac correct... it's mainly a matter of how wide the gap is and if it's stable. Like if you have two freely moving pieces, then they need to be held in place with fiberglass (like using a cast) or something else. The goal is to immobilize moving bits (that don't normally move) so that the shell and bone can fuse together. I definitely wouldn't do this carelessly, as it's ideal to assist the natural healing process. Only in cases of more extreme injury might we expect the fiberglass to become a permanent part. I'd imagine for smaller repairs, the fiberglass eventually comes off if it's not too much.

*Pro Tip:* If you ever have need to repair a cracked or broken tortoise shell, always use tape and _never_ use glue, as tortoise shells grow bigger as the tortoise grows older, and bonded shell cannot grow, it will just deform the shell.

This gives me inspiration to be my own vet with the squirrels. For some reason no vets I call will treat them when they have injuries 🥲

20 years ago my daughter and i found a turtle who was ran over but alive. we gently put him back together with first aid creme, duct tape and super glue. we kept him for a month and he got better. my lil girl painted his shell with hearts and stars and we set him loose close to where we found him but far from the road. it is a sweet memory.

Man, no kidding I had tears, my nose was running a little and then ... you showed those poor crickets, LIVE CRICKETS, that you put in for the poor little turtle to eat. Then, I started feeling so, so, sad for the crickets. Surely turtles eat vegetables, seeds, nuts, etc. But, I understand people auto-think insects are nothing. But I thank you and commend you so much for taking the time to help the poor turtle out.
