It's the illusion of choice. When you had to meet someone at a bar or book club or bowling or church, you didn't have many options and people would happily pick a partner. You ask couples how they met and what they thought of each other before dating, and it is always the guy saying she was sooo beautiful and I just had to meet her! You ask the girl and she says "when we met..I was meh. But then I was lonely or whatever and gave him a chance and he was funny and had a good time and I started liking him and now yada yada..we have been married 20 years." It has always been like this. That is why guy dating coaches say you have to raise interest level. Women think you are more attractive the more she knows you. Very few men have the looks or status where women are blown away. You see those examples in media because it is rare and people are fascinated. Because most people do not ever get that. Nothing about the graphs showing women think guys are ugly before she knows them is at all surprising or new. Always been this way. Your job as a guy is to raise that up.

It's crazy how competitive dating is nowadays. I feel as if men have to be absolutely perfect in order to even have a chance at dating. Hearing stories about how some of my older family members met each other and it was so simplistic and not nearly as cut throat and competitive. Great video. Think that was the best summation of what my own thoughts that I've ever heard. With Online dating there is a gap between how people present themselves and reality. And to do well you need to play that game and glam yourselves up, as you have to compete with others that are doing it. Dating apps are a joke. I’ve been following Courtney’s channel for over a year and have been working my ass off on self-improving myself in every possible way: going to the gym 5x a week, Invisalign to straighten my teeth, bought an all new wardrobe, better grooming habits, becoming more financially stable etc. Downloaded Hinge about a month ago. First week was super successful. Got a ton of matches and went on dates with four different women. This past week however, I had dates set up with three more women and they ALL texted the day of to cancel with no offer to reschedule. This is probably why an increasing number of men are starting relationships with women outside the US. Less complicated. I wanted an equal partnership, and I wasn't meeting my match in the US. I met my wife on a Christian dating website (she was in Brazil, had never been to the US, didn't care for the US either). We connected very well. I went to visit her and her family in Brazil. We married a year later. She moved to the US because we could both make more money in the US, which would allow us to visit family in Brazil far more often than working in Brazil and trying to save to visit family in the US.

Due to being shorter than average height in the U.S., my modern dating prospects within the U.S. were nearly nonexistent for what I was looking for. My wife cared more what kind of man I was (husband, father) and how I treated her and her family. She had a career and was making more money than me until I finished my masters degree. A lot of men going outside the U.S. (and even in the U.S.) don’t want equal partnerships, and that is really sad, and why I understand your comment a bit more. With feminism both men and women were supposed to rise up, but that didn’t happen. A lot of “passport bros” can barely provide financially, and certainly not emotionally, and often seek partnerships where the women seeks a relationship out of survival and not because they actually like or love the guy.

You know, something that just occurred to me while listening to you, Courtney (I LOVE your stuff by the way), was what if there was an app (or an actual scientific study) that put up the profile pictures of a grid of guys (or girls). Not just one at the time, but a grid of 9 or 16 pictures of guys (or girls) - sort of like a person would actually encounter in a real-world situation like a club, party or event. Then the user is given a somewhat short period of time to click on up to 3 or 4 of them. Then the user is presented with another page of 9 or 16 prospective dates/mates to click on. And so on for a few (or even several pages). Mix in new pictures, but some that were already displayed, maybe. And compile the choices of the user. I honestly think this might be an interesting study of "off the cuff" attraction (which, let's face it, is tremendously important). It might even be useful in helping the "chooser" better understand what they are attracted to. Unfortunately, I'm sure the more nefarious and capitalistic folks out there would find a way to turn it against the users for a profit. Worse still, the Marxists would figure out a way to further divide men from women, compatible mates and partners, from each other. Sorry, my cynicism is showing!

I have been kicked out of shops, bars, even the gym because of the way I look, this is nothing new, this happened to me when I was a lot younger, women instigated it every time, fast forward to now, I often hear women that I have never seen before commenting and saying "he's single, look at him, he's so ugly" I'm the first to admit that I'm not a looker, 5'4", overweight, (the only one that I am able to work on and I am), I don't earn a 6 figure income, I don't have anything flash, a normal car, job, home, I just live to my means. I have been single for over 30 years, all women cheated on me, I was told by a couple of ex partners, they saw me as short, (I wasn't overweight back then), ugly and they saw me as desperate and they just used me to see if they could still pull, when I walked away from all of this life, not one woman has ever approached me unless they have to, work colleagues, cashiers etc, I can go out, if I don't get kicked out of places, I am invisible, that has been proven on many occasions. Looks, money and possessions are more important to most women than someone who also has a great personality but isn't that good looking. There is a reason for that. Aging has a visible masculinization effect on human faces and it doesn't distinguish between male and female ones. That's why old women look like old men. If that wasn't their goal, they wouldn't be spending so much money and time disguising their true appearance, right? Your car washing analogy doesn't make sense because creating a completely false and artificial appearance is hardly the same as removing accumulated dirt. Altering one's true appearance by applying layers of face paint, Botox injections, breast implants, artificially increasing the size of one's lips with collagen injections, etc., is hardly comparable to taking a shower and combing your hair in the morning.

I had a conversation with a female friend recently and I tried to express why my standards are so low, I think I failed because what I was trying to express is that whether online or IRL I have to bring my A-game, just to have a chance with someone who's way below me. I hate it because often it makes me think that in order to date, love, be fulfilled, I have to have little to no standards the bar I have for women is so low. Meanwhile on the flip side if I don't bring my absolute best in every aspect of life everyday for months or years I don't deserve companionship, love, or a relationship. There are no days off and I realize this now, but I think I've decided that most women aren't worth my time or energy anymore, as for the ones that are, they won't date me, even if our numbers match, so insert forever alone meme here.

Things that would make me a better me, in my opinion, isn't about looks, it's about knowledge and intelligence. It took me some time to realize that this has barely any value in dating, but it has a lot of value for me.
