@tompurcell1499
@tompurcell1499 4 жыл бұрын
Harry Enfield's Television Programme (later called Harry Enfield and Chums) was a comedy sketch show broadcast during the early 90s. One of his best sketches in my opinion were the parodies of 1940s/1950s public information films in "grainy, scratchy" black and white, such as you've just shown. A lot of them are parodies of the well-to-do being either misogynist or looking down on us working-class cockney boys (Gawd bless 'em!). If you like this, then I'm sure you'll like the sketch on "Cholmondley_Warner's Conjugal Rights" (BTW, it's pronounced: "Chumley-Warner" - a reason which will take too long to explain!). Give it a go. You'll be wetting yourself! Here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3rZpJVtbpKbb5I

It's vital, here in Britain, to make younger people aware of the undertones that many "public information films" carried, at a time when people travelled less and had far more limited access to information and images of other cultures and countries. There was also a more automatic trust in government, and while Harry and co. do send it up, they stay surprisingly true to the tone and structure of many of these PIFs.

This is a favourite of mine, too. A clever satire on British 'public information films' made by the government over the years. Harry Enfield used this idea quite a few times in his tv show with a character called 'Mr Cholmondly-Warner' giving advice to his friend 'Mr Grayson'. The one about sex for newly married couples (1930's style) is very funny indeed.

The reason all these great BBC clips are from pre KZbin times is that the golden era of British comedy took place before some KZbinrs were born. This clip is an absolute classic from Harry Enfield and his frequent sidekick Paul Whitehouse. The style of the public service announcement is a callback to the morality of a century ago now. The Gold Standard debate was something from the late 1920s which would place this announcement early in the era of watching television at a cinema rather than at home.

harr has recently been in "upstart crow" as Shakespeare's curmudgeon of a father with David Mitchell and mark heap. it's an /everyman/ take on the like of Shakespeare that weaves in themes n parts and reflections of his works - like the Simpsons if homer were a really good writer.

And well reflecting the various "old man" parts in Shakespeare, like the doorman in Macbeth who delivers a comedic monologue on Brewer's Droop.

Look for the Harry and Paul parody of Brokeback Mountain!! I remember people talking about it the day after it was first shown. Absolutely hilarious.

This is comedy, a skit i of attitudes maybe back in the 20’s 30’s . The joke is really on the blokes and the old attitudes :) thats why its so clever

Great reaction I loved this back in the day, you might remember Harry and Paul were on the couch in the Graham Norton clip you uploaded with Stanley Tucci and the badly translated menus

People who think this is sexist are as big a problem as sexists. The whole point is how ridiculous sexism is, not that women are lesser.
