People never fail to complain about the "slow" times in these Olympic races. What could possibly be more irrelevant than the finishing time? What matters is who brought home the medals. You're never likely to see record times in races this important because no individual is going to risk her medal chances by taking the pace out all by herself. The only exception is when an 800 meter runner of superhuman ability like Rudisha decides to throttle the race from the starting gun. Anything longer than half a mile, and the pack is going to work together to catch the front runner.

Spot on Bert! You said: " If you are racing at this level then you should know whether you are a 'sit 'n' kicker', or someone who has to push the pace early. If you are in the Olympic final, and you don't have the kick to win, you should be running your guts out to get as good a time as possible." So true; they should know that and run their race and push the sit n kickers. I cannot beat my eleven year old daughter unless I pace from the start because her kick is way too strong for me in the last 250. That said, I don't race her because I don't want to burn her out :)

I'm certainly not saying they spoilt the race, at least not for the viewers; my favourite race to watch of all time is the 2004 800m olympic final. Slow race, but Borzakovsky's finish was a true spectacle. But in all these races, the guys without the kick, but with a good season's best HAVE GOT to front-run, hard, to have a chance at medalling. I can understand pressure, but basic logic tells them that this is the only way they can hope to medal.

The race might have been slower than these athletes could run if they were going for time, but they were going for the win, meaning that a slow start is used with strategy. You'll see a very similar phenomenon in track cycling. But just because the first part was slow doesn't mean they didn't run as hard as they could at the end.

Dirtiest race in distance running history. The gold AND silver 'medallists' later disqualified, 6 of the top 9 sanctioned for doping in their careers, 4 of those 6 having their results from this race struck down...disgraceful. By all rights, the medal table ought to read 1. Jamal, 2. Aregawi, 3. Rowbury.

But now they are doing blood passports to detect any changes between tests rather than just looking for substances. It's a good start. I'm glad they caught Cakir Alptekin, but I am still suspicious of Bulut. Look at her last lap, she tried to make a break already with less than 400 to go, so it's a little unusual to think she could just kick twice like that at the end of a 1500. Props to her if she could... If not, then I feel for Maryam who deserved the gold. `
