Evelyn Ashford was 35 at this point, which is considered “old” in the track n field industry. Fortunately, that didn’t stop her, she came out, gave it her all and for that she won another gold medal. A true legend!

No I doubt the USA was ready to win in 1980, the GDR and USSR were doped up big time still, and USA with a healthy Ashford might have had trouble medaling - the healthy US team would have been Alice Brown, Brenda Morehead, Chandra Cheeseborough, and Ashford anchoring...Britain ran 42.43 for 3rd - that would have been a big effort to get past that.

I think she is really underrated. Due to some bad luck and bad timing with injuries and other things she didn't win more major championships. Only the 200 gold in Barcelona Olympics, 100 metre gold at 95 worlds, plus all her relay golds, but she was absolutely one of the very best and capable of winning anytime on the track at 100, 200, 400. She got very unlucky to be injured in 96, was also injured for the 93 worlds, was certainly capable of winning the 100 here as she showed in this relay destroying the individual bronze winner, but had a horrible start even considering the start from the blocks isn't her strength. And the DQ from the 200 at the 95 worlds. Could have won the 400 at the 93 worlds and challenged Perec in the 400 in Barcelona but due to her schedule couldn't run that plus the 100 and 200. People remember Jones, Flo Jo, Devers, Ottey, and now some of the recent Jamaicans and Americans, but Torrence is so great and way better than most realize she was. As for Privalova she is probably the best white and European sprinter (excluding the East German drug mules) so that is something. And she came back to win the 400 hurdles in 2000, and amazing transformation.

@@bbatjargal1549 She underachieved as far as major titles too. She would have won the 100 and 200 in Atlanta if she didn't get injured. The 200 at the 95 worlds without the silly lane line thing. The 100 at the 92 Games if she ran up to her potential. The 100 and 200 at the 91 worlds without drug cheat Krabbe (although I think all sprinters including Gwen could be doped, but Krabbe obviously was even more than the norm given her out of blue results and disappearance at a mere 23). A medal in the 400 at the 92 Games had she run it, and gold at the 93 worlds. That is another reason she is underrated. Her list of individual titles due to bad luck and circumstances don't stack up to her talent level and ability level.

Devers should've been required to train with the relay team being one of the three 100m trials qualifiers. After all, the top 6 at trials would've automatically been placed on the relay team, or so I thought. Back then, they also didn't train for the relay until just before the games, so it's not like including Devers would've disrupted a well-oiled relay machine or anything. Being the great starter Devers was, I think she would've been fine to run the lead off leg. She wasn't even considered though, from what I remember, not even for the heats.

Everytime I view this race I dislike the late teddy mccook even more,he knew jamaica had a very good chance to win the gold and that fella refuse to even let grace jackson run the relay,cuthbert had to run her heart out because dahlia duhaney on the corner was the weak link.cuthbert pulled.

Yes it hurts me to this day as well if Juliet had tested for the final it would be a sure gold medal no doubt. ..they should have only let melene and Juliet compete in the finals and in 1996 nicole Mitchell ran a terrible third leg

Without Devers speed and if Cuthbert didn't injure herself, Jamaica wins this race. Two of the top five in the women's 100 with 10.7x to 10.8x legs (still wind) was too much foot speed

Devers speed? She got toasted by Irina on the last leg at World championships. Ottey got toasted by Gwen on the last leg by Torrence in 1995
@RKRKRK78
@RKRKRK78 4 жыл бұрын
@@Bahia82 She would still be faster than Esther Jones, Ashford or Guidry. Also your recollection of those anchors is completely wrong. Devers didn't get toasted, in fact, she was behind Privalova at the start of the leg, got ahead and then gave the lead back. Ottey was always behind Torrence in 1995. A real thrashing was Ottey to Privalova in 1991 and 1996 or Arron to Privalova in 1998.

I"m surprised how Gwen was able to chase down Irina Privalova, considering Irina beat Gwen in the 100m.

Privalova's strength is her start which is more or less negated with a rolling start in the relays. Torrence's strength is her finish and she has better speed endurance than Privalova, thus was slowing down less and was able to pass her.

Barring any mishap that gold wouldve been jamaicas if the Jaaa's hierarchy had used his discretion by showing some leniency, they omitted Grace jackson(she didnt run in the fianls, because of prior committments,she was refused a selection on the relay team),the Now Madam Julieth Cuthbert on backstraight had to put out everything she had as a result pulled up just b 4 reaching the corner runner,the athlete on the curve Dahlia Duhaney was the weakest link,poor Merlene another chance at gold gone.the team shouldve been Micheĺle Freeman,Grace Jackson,Julieth Cuthbert & Merlene Ottey a recipe for gold, but thanks to the late Teddy Mc Cook then president of the Jaaa's we didnt get to saviour that moment,it took us 12yrs later to achieved it.Believe it or not i predicted exactly how that race wouldve run(2004 Olympics 4×100 women Finals)

I struggle to understand why the Russians and Germans female athletes these days can't perform like as they used to back in the 70s and early 80s dominance... steroid? Maybe
@AlexanderTch
@AlexanderTch 4 жыл бұрын
yes, Americans usually did steroids and do it now. Besides, Russia had terrible crisis in 90s and East Germany disappeared. Before that , Eastern Germany children could do sports for free. Now they can't.

@@AlexanderTch American sports drug testing system does not cheat or corrupt like Russia... and East German as known by the whole world of cheating by injecting their female atheletes ... Russia is the worse and that's the reason they banned from competing in many competitions including next year olympic. American system does't cheat like Russia and East Germany. America dominates sports because they invest millions in sports than any other countries on planet.

@@PF-vu2gd You lie, American athletes look like mountains of muscles, women look like men. Russian athletes look normal. It's obvious that american athletes use lots of doping and somettimes they are caught. Histeria about Russia had pure political reasons. American sports have huge laboratories about dopings. They create dopes that cannot be detected because they are new. After that they report about new dopes to international sport organizations and create new. So, they detect dopes in another federeations but use new types.

@@AlexanderTch Russian and East Germany women would never compete with black American, Jamaican and African women in 100, 200, relay 4×100 but these are events were dominating by the Russians and East Germany in the 70s and 80s.. why? Because they were injecting with steroid... and why the World Athletic body banned Russia from next year Olympic at Tokyo? Because Russia Sports were cheating on their top athletes drug test... you tell me why Russian female athletes these days can't compete with the Americans and Jamaicans and African countries. Is there a reason why they don't show up? Hhhhhhhhh
@AlexanderTch
@AlexanderTch 4 жыл бұрын
@@PF-vu2gd Why is that? African race superiority? Russian boxers easily competed and compete with africal ones. Same with running.. Both USSR and GDR had massive sports. All children could do sports for free at any times. White people also can run fast. In case of massive sports it's more easy to find phenomena among human beings. In Early 70s there were no dopes, but there was another Russian phenomenal runner - Valery Borzov who made world records in running and overran all african runners.
