When COVID-19 hit Johannesburg West, Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity, Dorah Marema, used the principle of Letšema, to help tackle food insecurity in her community.
South Africa’s existing inequalities were laid bare by the coronavirus and Marema saw people in her community going to bed hungry. Using Solidarity Grant she helped local women develop a self sustainable model of growing food and selling the excess at community markets.
Now those without the means to buy premium quality food, are eating the same produce as their wealthier counterparts. Marema, an Atlantic Fellow in Racial Equity, says the power to change society isn’t in some people “it’s in all of us..just waiting to be awakened.’
