Thank you for pronouncing this correctly! I keep hearing people pronounce both words the same way and it's so weird. I'm wondering if it's a new linguistic change or something people in other countries have always done? I'm in England and everyone here pronounces woman as woman, and women as wimmin.

The "A" that changes into an "E" doesn't affect the pronunciation, but the unchangeable "O" in the writing that changes in the speaking! English is a crazy!
@ThePowerfax
@ThePowerfax 3 жыл бұрын
Well, actually there is a little difference between the pronunciation of "A" and "E". In womAn the vowel is open, while in womEn the vowel is neutral - a mere detail since the big difference is in the first syllabe... But in words like BAD and BED you need to pay attention to the vowel timbre. (:
@MaoRatto

IPA says " aesh". Aesh is a front vowel, E is a front vowel. The difference is raising.

Yes I keep noticing this everywhere now, people pronouncing women as 'wuh-men' rather than 'wimmin' which is the pronunciation I grew up with and used to hear everywhere until recently. I've noticed British and Americans saying wuhmen now. I wonder if this new pronunciation is the result of foreign people learning English and pronouncing things phonetically and their pronunciation taking hold in the mainstream.

Hi Hadar! First of all, I'd like to say that I love your videos, you're my favorite teacher :),just by hearing you talking , I can feel the passion that you have for teaching. I'm having troubles with the words girl and jelaous. And also, how do you pronounce a regular or iregular verb which is followed by the word "it" , for instance: "I liked it" "I heard it" " I enjoyed it" , I doesn't sound very natural when I say those but I want to make clear that those verbs are in past. (The last one might sound stupid but I've always had that question) I sent you a e-mail a couple of days ago in regards of your classes, I imagine that you as an accent coach ,offer lessons. Thanks!

Thank you! Showing my age here, but I’ve heard so many younger people pronounce both words as the single ‘woman’. I’m wondering when this changed?
@axelwiren337
@axelwiren337 Жыл бұрын
The word "wifman" was pronounced something like "weef-mon." Over time, the "f" sound vanished, as did the letter, and the word became "wimman." Then the Normans invaded England and the pronunciation changed: The word became "wumman" in the singular and "wimmin" in the plural. The double-m was eventually dropped. (Since hardly anyone could read or write, there were variations on all these things; for the complete, eyeball-tiring survey, check the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Your pronunciation of "woman and "women" is perfect. British English is the same, so this is not necessarily just US pronunciation. The problem here in New Zealand though, is that even so called educated people here (politicians and journalists) now pronounce the plural form no different to the singular. It is painfull to listen to. You would do well to change the title of this video to "WOMAN vs. WOMEN | English pronunciation for New Zealanders"
