Yup. Sounds like a spun bearing to me. Most likely a rod bearing judging by the un-evenness of the cranking. The way its gets harder for an instant and then rotates a bit, then gets tough again... until the battery just cant do it any more. You're probably right in that it spun on the way home. While it was already hot and turning. Once he got home and it cooled ... game over. Can't wait to see if you get to do a teardown to verify our suspicions.

The oil filter doesn't look too bad, but it's not good, usually if it was a spun bearing, there would be way more material. My thought is you're going to see something with the oil pump chain or cylinder walls at this point. This is for sure an odd one though. I'll be curious to see the exact issue, and then figure out why it happened. Great video!

The serp belt needs to come off and retest if you can spin engine again. One of the accessories may be locked up . If starter is easy to access pull that out as well and retest. If engine still spins hard it is an internal engine issue .
@blueskiesmobileauto42533 жыл бұрын
I agree I always eliminate any seized accessory pulleys by pulling the belt and cranking. Also the cranking speed/rhythm may change with just the crank spinning so you can get a better idea of engine sound while cranking.
@JackRR152 жыл бұрын
Damn did he really spin it with the belt that's a mistake IMO. Always take it off to check for rotation.

I was thinking the same! I had a 2016 e400 in the shop with lowmielage and acted exactly like a seized engine, was just a fully seized alternator

Right off the bat, Jamie nailed it- Of course you have a real problem, you have a bmw.
@carmudgeon74783 жыл бұрын
Nice! I'd have gone the other way with slow crank. Pulled accessory belt, test starter, then manually rotate engine once starter and frozen accessories eliminated. Hard manual rotation would have put locked up converter or trans trouble on my radar. Unbolt TC or pressure plate and try again. Only then would I have arrived at your crank, rod conclusion. Your way was much faster. I'm impressed.👍
@AymenMusnic2 жыл бұрын
A problem in the converter or the trans would have triggered problems before, so I don't think it's a good idea to go there in the first place, I thought I'd let you know, we don't want anyone to get stuck anywhere ;) .

Didn’t know guys got the M57 thought it was just us in the U.K. and Europe, I practically know everything about that engine done all service and repair work my self a really solid engine, personally I’ve never encountered the M57 to spin a rod bearing Although I suspect it to be a main crankshaft bearing. If one main bearing is goosed the rest of the bearings should be inspected. The mains are the first to receive oil, anything past that main could be damaged.

Oil filter looks fine. We had spun bearings in a 335i gas engine (not welded to the crank but 2 of the 6 were spun) and the oil filter was packed with metal including tons of copper. Even with all the metal we were able to polish the crank journals with 3000 grit and then metal polish to a mirror finish and it’s been fine for over a year at about 550hp. I don’t think it’s a spin / welded bearing unless I’m missing something.

I’d say check the injection pump, or the oil pump, but judging by the condition of the oil on the filter i would check the injection one first. I’m thinking even if you got some fuel pressure it’s because the pump is still spinning when the engine cranks. I suggest you check the fuel tank too if it has contamination that may have caused the issue, otherwise it could have just seized itself.
@waifuracer65162 жыл бұрын
Someone already said it below but I think too it might be an auxiliary item driven by the belts. Altough then the belt would have extra wear on it so idk. In my experience (sadly) even trough diesel knock and injector sounds youll hear a spun bearing and if the customer is running meth injection he likely knows enough about cars to hear a spun bearing but thats just my guess. Also when I had a spun bearing I had an oil pressure warning immidiately after, that was a 1.8T tough not a bmw so not sure if this would do it or not. Curious to see what it is :)

@fransb85432 жыл бұрын
My m57 (albeit a single turbo 306d3 type) is at 400.000km or 250k miles without issues, pulls strong, no dpf or Injector failures. Pro tip: replace the thermostats (main and egr cooler), they fail and the coolant doesn't get hot enough to activate the dpf regeneration. Since you have no coolant temp gauge you'll only find out when the dpf is full... For the rest it's just regular oil changes and avoid making only short journeys around town, diesels hate that. I like to change at half the interval bmw suggests because diesels tend to soil their oil more quickly.
