Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #582
Date of adventure: 8/28-8/29/21
Camping on the shore of Utah's post-apocalyptic-looking but weirdly beautiful Great Salt Lake, near a large-scale land art installation called Spiral Jetty. This was one of my favorite campsites of all time!

Sarah, Make sure to flush the wheel wells and the underside of your Toyota to flush any excess salt off of your cars body, axles, etc. It can cause problem’s in regards to corrosion. Just an FYI…

My grandmother used to swim in the salt lake. Because of the density floating on the surface is easy for anyone. I believe she swam at some sort of resort. That would have been about 1935-40.

I just love how you find the beauty in every place you go. The desert and barren lands you visit truly are probably not beautiful at first sight to most. But when you really sit back and watch a sunrise or sunset and just take it all in. This beautiful area really is amazing! Thank you so much for helping people learn to appreciate and see beauty in a different way!

Living is SLC alot of time has been spent there. My little sister decided it would be a great idea to do a little off roading in her brand new VW she sank clear up to the cars axles, there were no tow services willing to help her out, she finally got 8 big beefy guys got out there and try to help finally after a number of sheets of plywood and elbow grease they lifted it out and she was free. I've walked out further than I should have and sunk clear to my knees glad I wasn't alone. lol b Have fun

Wonderhussy, thank you for the up close and personal look at the lake. When I was a youth my parents would drive by the lake in route to visit my grandparents in northern Idaho every year and we never stopped to look. Back then cars had no air conditioners and they most likely did not want to broil in the summer heat.

I was there in July. And the pink is a salt-loving algae. And the salt under the water is hard and sharp on the feet it will make your feet sore quickly when you walk into the lake. That part of the lake is saturated with salt. That spot is a long drive from Salt Lake City. And the wash-board road is hard on your suspension It will wear it out quickly. The south part of the lake is half-saturated. While you were there at the Spiral Jetty, I was chasing IDA in Louisiana.

Came back from wendover in the 80s. Water was flooding the interstate it was so high but the foam looked like it had snowed, couldn't see the road. The water was very high at one time where they had to redo the whole freeway by lake point and rise up the railroad tracks because it had flooded so bad. You can still see the pumps of the West desert.

cool video. I live in salt lake, and it is really important that the lake stays full, not only for industry but for our environment. It is at a dangerously low level. If it dries up completely, the huge toxic lake bed will be exposed and essentially create a dust bowl for the salt lake valley and beyond.

20:19 Those salty spherules look amazingly similar to the "blueberries" photographed on the surface of Mars by one or more of the rovers now exploring there. At the Great Salt Lake, we can assume that they likely were formed by the action of water, probably waves moving back and forth at the shoreline and thus forming the salt into balls. Could the same processes once have been at work on Mars to form the Martian blueberries? Pretty cool spot, what with the spiral jetty and all. Stay safe out there.

The ones on earth are formed of iron picked up, aggregated and carried down by tons of water washing it. It will be interesting if the scientists will figure out what and how the martian ones are made.
@SCSlimBoiseID
@SCSlimBoiseID 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidburroughs2244 Going just by the red coloration of the Martian landscape, my guess is that there is plenty of (oxidized) iron tied up in the soil there. If that's the case, then Mars must have had an oxygen-rich atmosphere at some point in its past. The CO2 in its current atmosphere sort of suggests that as well.

About those pumps. I was visiting my family in '81 and the lake was high. I visited again in '83 and they were raising I80 because the old route was under water. In '87 they completed the pumps in the west part of the lake. They turned them on once to prove they worked. The lake had dramatically dropped by that time, so they dug a canal to feed water to the pumps. They have never been used to lower the lake level. I don't know if they even work now.
