I gave up on the WOO in its first generation. I realized that it wasn't at all accurate and that my "highest" jumps were more than likely outliers. I also got tired of the whole competition thing and trying to track other people on their WOO's. So much easier to simply rig up and go and not worry at all about whether or not the battery was charged, if I actually turned it on, if I measured up to other kiters, if my WOO is supported or not, if I have the latest WOO, if if if. Excellent job as usual!

After analyzing a dozen or so units and users in our comunity, we have reached a few conclutions. 1. Woo does not work very well on a foil board. Woo them self has also stated this. 2. Woo 1/2 seems to miss more jumps when the rider is using a foil kite due to the often very soft landings. Not sure how the v.3 works with this. 3. All Woos are not created equal! I've done a bit of testing with 2 different Woo 3.0 on the same board. They vary dramaticly, so much that you can't really say that 3.0 jumps higher than 2.0. It depends on your individual Woo. So if you want to get on the top spot, try a few different devices, one will most likley give you one or a few extra meters. 4. If your session feel of, report it to Woo, they will look at it and remove any "incorrect readings". We only talk about "Woo meters" now since it's not the most accurate device ever conceived...

It also depends on what style of kite you have. C-kites measure higher because the acceleration up is faster. The PIQ is a bit less acurate than the woo but has an algorithm that makes it more accurate over time. The advantage of the PIQ is that it displays your height on the device right after the jump which helps with jumping progression. When you get instant feedback you can make adjustments accordingly. I still think the woo is more accurate than the PIQ, but the PIQ is useful for jump progression.

Great job. What a huge effort to answer a question we've been asking on the beach for years! I'd like the makers of WOO to respond to this so we can get their side... but until they do, I'm going to keep my WOO in the motorhome and ENJOY the ride and the feel of the jump and work on the smoothness of the landing (one thing that tends to be lower priority when boosting for a PB!). I tested my woo 3, lifting it repeatedly from floor height to my maximum reach over and over again, at varying speeds and with the woo at different angles. The results were that it did miss some 'jumps'; especially those where i moved it slowly, but seemed pretty robust to expected changes of orientation. The jumps all came in within 20cm of each other, in the range 2.3m to 2.5m. Try it yourself, or look me up on Woo - Pete Jones, my session is recorded there a couple of days ago, named 'Test' I have matching video footage also.

So some technical thoughts ... I find the one I have (and i mean this sincerely) feels reasonably accurate and if anything it feels like it underestimates at times ... I'm not a big jumper but I've never done a jump where I came in and said no way did I jump that high, if anything I've come in and said, really? is that all? lol So here is my thinking ... maybe there are different production batches that use different accelerometers or as Laurie said firmware issues ... Laurie, Yuri, if you guys are interested I'll give you my woo 3 to try and see if there is a difference between 3.0 models ... I'm not a woo fan boy and i only recently got one but i think this is a great video and a great question you've posed. So from what I understand the Woo algorithm is based on acceleration which can be fooled and flawed, for example what happens if you get a double lift, or if you kick up your board to do an invert .. i think that added acceleration can mess up the algorithm and translate to more than just the extra height gained by lifting the board above your head? Science aside I find the woo is fun and helps push people to jump and improve. Furthermore judging your height without a device is almost impossible especially without having initial comparisons/reference data. For me its a fun device and im glad i have one ... but for others i would recommend building a kite and board quiver before adding a woo which is more of a luxury item. And as for this video comparison and if you guys should do more of these ... I also mean this sincerely ... all your videos are great and keep doing what your doing ... it would be like telling Michelangelo how to paint the Sistine chapel! Aloha.

Just wanted to add that it might be possible to get accurate ground truth of the height of the jumps using multiple cameras and techniques from Computer Vision, specifically photogrammetry. I have the Woo 2.0 and the 3.0 and this video is a good representation of what I've seen in my experience as well. Almost every jump is way too high, and even more so on the Woo 3.0 to the point where's it a useless device. What if the Woo people actually developed an accurate algorithm, would they even want to use it? An accurate Woo would put you at a significant disadvantage in competing with other Woo users on the leaderboards.
@JamesLamb5 жыл бұрын
Bottom line, seems an accelerometer is a crappy way to measure elevation, though I'm surprised it does as well as your tests. Maybe if you tossed the unit in the air it might give you a more accurate estimate of height, since the motion is more uniform. But on a kiteboard, your motion up and down is different from the more uniform acceleration / deceleration of an object tossed into the air. I say a different technology would be superior, though maybe more expensive? And if you want to be really consistent, the sensor should be placed at your center of gravity, not your board.

Were all your tests done on foil kites? Using both LEI and foil kites I know that the woo always over estimates the height on my jumps with the foil kite (probably something to do with the increased float that skews the numbers). Really like the video! I think the device should work for all levels of jumpers. if you're a huge air jumper you want to know that your jumps over 10 meters are accurate. But if you're just learning and you want to try to get a 5m jump you want to know that it's 5 meters. One thing I might have affected the perception of the jump height is how close the jump was mase to the camera. This may create a perspective that makes one jump look higher than another.? I think you should give the Woos away to whoever puts in the best comment 😉

Interesting but it seems a bit harsh compared with my experience with the WOO 2. I'm not interested in the leaderboard aspect of the WOO so I don't really care about it being dead exact for comparison purposes although it's pretty obvious from all the VLOGs out there than when the WOO shows 20+ meters it looks a LOT higher than when it shows 8-12m... To me it has been a great motivational tool and it has helped me improve my technique. I usually know by the end of a session if I'm expecting to see jumps at or near my personal best or if it's going to be lower. The interest of course being when you feel you might have exceeded your personal best to look at the WOO for confirmation. Yes, there are some hit or miss but I've never seen anything outlandish ( and I've had 3 or 4 WOO 2 as they all died pretty quickly and were promptly replaced under warranty) While I've certainly had jumps that never registered and some jumps showing somewhat higher than they felt like, it hasn't been that frequent. I'm hoping the smartwatch connection on the WOO 3 will help as it will allow you to immediately match the jump "feeling" with the WOO measurement displayed. With a bit of experience it should be possible to ignore the obviously skewed measurements and have a pretty decent idea of how high your jump was and improve your technique accordingly Bottom line is, if you're mostly competing with yourself, it's a great if flawed help.
@OurKiteLife5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for comment Dave. Our intention was not to be harsh on the Woo. Originally a few of our friends got Woo3s and we noticed that they started posting jumps higher than they appeared to be, so we decided to investigate. Overall we love the idea of the Woo as a tracker and for the most part we are happy with it as it provides a reasonable picture of your jumps during your session. Our main takeaway was that focusing on an individual jump, especially the highest jump, could be potentially misleading as that jump can be an outlier. We suggest looking at the average height of your jumps. Secondly, we did find that the Woo3 does report statistically higher jump readings than the Woo2. In the end, we still occasionally use our Woos , we just don't give a whole lot of meaning to the highest jump anymore.

Exactly. To get an accurate height of jump, you could use an altimeter (but a jump is to fast to give you a good result) or a barometer (but you'd have to calibrate it precisely before each session and probably during a session if the weather changes). @@Baptiste_L that's right. It is a good video, as It compares many situations and put on perspective the Woo accuracy. I thought it would not be fun to use a device that renders significant alleatory errors. It's like a watch that cannot tell you what time it is. It goes without saying that many folks use Woo for competition, which causes a lot of annoyance with this errors. A few weeks ago, a friend jumped maybe 9 meters visually and Woo pointed 15.7 meters... the result was he was the champion of South America that day... Anyway, I see many people having fun with the Woo, and I will buy one as soon as It gets better.

I think the latest firmware update in mid February 2019 has made the woo 3.0 read the same if not less at times, than the reading on the woo 2, After several sessions with the woo 3 and 2 on the same board there has defiantly been a change from February when the woo 3.0 device its self was updated. now my woo 2 gets the highest reading than my woo 3.0 most sessions???

I did my own testing, 5 sessions, about 300 jumps with Woo2 and Woo3 side-by side. Mine were much more similar, most jumps within 3-5% difference, but Woo3 definitely had more outliers, a few as much as 30% higher than with the Woo2, - there are a couple of sessions I did not save, - to still have a chance to beat my own record on a good day. In your review, the one outlier you focus on, - seems that it reported 3s too early take-off and a few meters too high jump, - which may fit with the Woo blog comment that they detect the landing, then search back for the take-off, and then compute the curve (?)
@OurKiteLife6 жыл бұрын
could be that they detect the landing. That was the only outlier with a different time stamp thought. The other 8.6m outlier jump had identical take off and similar air time

You missed one thing that I've brought up with woo and that is around speed of leaving the water. Not your forward momentum but the ping you get when getting ripped off the water. I've got an experiment running to try and work out which is better, getting ripped off the water or going high with less momentum.
@axarothfiefa66766 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting idea. What are you suspicions so far?
@TKM113706 жыл бұрын
@@axarothfiefa6676 So far, if you leave the water slower, like you were going off a wave and sending the kite, you will get a higher score and will be quite accurate (give or take a few ft). When ripping off the flat, maxed to the crackers on a 10m kite in 35 knots, the speed you leave the water feels like the woo can't quite catch up. I am a heavy guy so I jump in a different way to most. I have to leave the water mega fast to go high and it seems when I do I get weird readings. One thing I will say is that the Woo3 does understand downloops. As you guys who ride foil kites know, when you do a downloop on the way down from a jump, more than often you go back up again and stay in the air for longer. My Woo2 never understood these and I have had jumps where I am doing 2.5 downloops on a 15m Sonic FR. There is NO way you can do that many downloops and register 6 seconds. On my Woo3, I get the 9+ seconds it actually took.
@PeteJonesF66 жыл бұрын
@@TKM11370 Hey Tony. I suspect this is down to the sampling frequency. I have a suspicion that the woo3 has a higher sampling frequency to that of the woo2, and hence results in 'more accurate' jumps - which of course it would, with the integration occurring over a shorter timestep. Taking it to the extreme with a heavier rider getting ripped off the water, it is perhaps that the sampling frequency, whilst higher still isn't high enough for this very explosive motion. All in theory of course :)
@PeteJonesF66 жыл бұрын
However they do say that they integrate on the way down also, which should even things out a bit. Perhaps the result is the average of the two, in which case you will still get penalized, but less so.

I trust what you're saying about the WOO's (lack of) accuracy is roughly right, but how is your way of measuring any more accurate? You should approach this in a much more scientific way to get proper results.
@OurKiteLife4 жыл бұрын
Not disagreeing with you, we have a plan in mind, jumping over 7mninflatable buoy to measure accuracy. Will have to wait till we go back to OBX to do it.

@maxgiac6 жыл бұрын
Nice job, but you have to replicate this using at least 3 units of Woo2 and Woo3 in order to have representative data of Woo2 and 3 model. Actually, you just compared one VS one device and we know each device (2 or 3) can perform slightly different. So, it could be possible the difference you found is related to the device and not to the model!!

I feel like the woo has problems with smaller jumps.
@OurKiteLife5 жыл бұрын
I think it has a problem with all the jumps, specifically the height number. It does more or less good figuring out that a small jump is small, medium is medium and big is big, and that what the number of meters you jumped tells you. Just because it says you jumped 12 meters, doesn't mean you did, honestly we haven't used our woo for almost half a year now
@brunot38615 жыл бұрын
@@OurKiteLife okay might be right , the woo works to me on bigger jumps than 5 Meters and on lower jumps I don't use it. I think that every woo measures a bit different which was a bigger problem with the woo 2.0 and 1.0 because of the non waterproofed mounts.
@brunot38615 жыл бұрын
@@OurKiteLife I know people who are jumping not very high because of missing wind or anything and on these sessions the woo measures weird things
