Hello! Warm regards from India! Absolutely love your videos! Being Indian(a place where wood apple isn't a difficult thing to find), I can almost surely say what you had was rotten or at least ripen beyond a stage where you don't consume it anymore. It's supposed to have between a light cream and deep orange colour depending on the specie but definitely not the colour you had! Although personally I don't like the fruit, it's nothing that you'd hate eating at all. Keep eating fruits! Stay safe! 😁

That one is also Rotten sorry, we eat these all time...very hard to get a riped one. When it’s ripe, it’s beautifully sweet and succulent. The taste is chocolatey and fruity at the same time. Also has a dense feel in the mouth very hearty.

Hey Jared, I'm sure you know already but you've been given some non-typical specimens. I.E. Rotten. When you crack it open it should be syrupy with gelatinous seeds. Many people mix it with copious amounts of sugar and shaved ice. It looks disgusting but the flavour is quite unique and kinda tasty when done right. When you get your fruit, it's best to get it right off the tree or in the presence of a local. Some produce at the market can be questionable at times.

wood apple is also called elephant apple. we call it velaga pandu in telugu language . I have never eaten it (very astringent) but we often serve it to Lord Ganesh in Puja on Ganesh Chaturthi. the Bael fruit is called Maaredu. it is considered auspicious for Worshiping Shiva(only Leaves). A bought and drank a bottle of Squash made from the Bael fruit . tasted ok. we have a saying regarding wood apple that elephants swallow it whole , digest it and poop out the outershell intact(fun fact). the core is completely hollow. we equate it with hollow things, claims,corruption in projects( it looks normal on the outside but is empty inside).Hope I am making sense

When on a 10month round-the-world cruise on Windjammer Bare Foot Cruises "Yankee Trader" in 1978 I was principally obsessed with visiting the fruit markets at every port of call we visited, all tropical, save for Cape Town, when we had to go round the Cape of Good Hope, so I saw a lot of weird stuff, including once the Wood Apple in Trincamalee, Sri Lanka. I instantly declared this the world's worst fruit -- BTW I've never even dared try the Noni. I and another shipmate once lay on some grass somewhere in Sri Lanka laughing our gutts out for hours about "punishing" some obnoxious fellow, suffering from malaria, who had beaten up his wife, subsequently tossed off the ship, but meanwhile we joked about a FAR worse punishment and that was confining the tortured soul to his cabin and forcing him to subsist on a diet of wood apples and water, Hahahahahahah. It STILL gets me going off laughing. Poor Malaria Jim, as we called him. Poor Malaria Jim and his freaking Wood Apples!!!! LMFAO!!! BTW, I recall reading about what might be a candidate for another of your worst ten fruits in the world list, something called the "Slime Apple" which I never encountered, never regretting that I haven't. Some Funky fruits on Sri Lanka, that's for sure. And the champedak, Yikes!!!!

Hello, you should be able to tell a nicely ripe wood apple by smelling it. It would have this weird fruity smell, a bit like a pineapple smell. I’ve tried a wood apple drink in Colombo (srilanka) where they mixed wood apple pulp with ice cold water, coconut milk, sugar and a pinch of salt. They then strained the mixture, final product looked a bit like a thick smoothie. It was delicious!
@gokulamuthans
@gokulamuthans 5 жыл бұрын
The correct way of eating is to mix jaggery (half the amount of fruits quantity) to it and let it marinade in jaggery for an hour, then the jaggery would have melted and it gives you a sweet, sour and astringent (called as Thuvarpu, the sixth taste of Tamil food) aftertaste. It actually has the property of cure any stomach related issues.

@Weird Explorer love your videos.......There is 2 way to determine whether Wood Apple is ripe or not without cracking it.... 1. The smell (ripe Wood Apple smells a lot, when it is ripe the whole room will smell of it, its not bad smelling, the smell will be very fruity).... 2. When the Wood Apple is ripe the pulp inside will separate completely from the woody encloser, basically the pulp will shrink n separate, so when u shake it it will rattle, its an easy giveaway).....Apart from that the ripe Wood Apple will fall off the tree (thats a clear indication)

In my place it is called as velagakaya the wood apple. Actually it tastes very good if its is ripe. or it will taste very sour when it is not ripe. the outer shell is not that hard to break and the colour of the inner stuff varies from white - esh green to light wooden brown color. depends on the ripe factor. the stuff inside actually taste sour-sweet and will be like semi solid with seed like structure. the texture will be like big siders skin when the shell is broken.

This video is pretty ancient, but the indian store here in Milwaukee sells jars of woodapple jam, and it's GREAT. Sort of tastes like fig, apple, tamarind, and a hint of funk. The funk reminds me alittle bit of funkier beer with wild yeast or a litlte hint of blue cheese or fermented tofu. It's gross if you have a huge mouthful, but a regular amount on bread or whatever is great. I bet it'd be really good with certain cheeses.

I am strangely interested in the wood apple. Also know as CURD FRUIT, according to Wikipedia. Seems appropriate.

It is really an interesting fruit! Even though I think it tastes awful there really there is nothing like it.

the fruit you got is over ripen. it should be light medium to medium brown in color and should be sour in taste. you should have this with some sugar and salt.

"Awww. Don't force yourself! Awww. Don't force yourself". BTW, ever tried Pu-Erh tea? It's camellia sinensis tea that's been allowed to partially turn to dirt. It sounds awful, but it becomes this tasty tea that you can steep to death without any bitterness.

I just managed to find some wood apple nectar in a local Indian store! Taste was weird, there's totally a fake butter flavour that almost reminds me of puke, might be buteric acid.

I'm seeing alot of amendments to this fruit saying it tastes good if you add x,y and z. To me, that doesnt really sell the fruit on it's own. Making all that additions to make it taste good, makes it seem like alot of work to eat a fruit.

Ask the vendor to compensate by giving you fresh ones FOC. Don't ask for refund if you haven't tasted a proper one. Won't quit just yet, right?

When I was in Ghana some years ago, I used to get something we called a custard apple. It had multiple seeds inside each seed surrounded by soft apple like fruit. It tasted like stewed apples and custard strange but delicious fruit. Have you come across this fruit?

Custard apple usually refers to fruits in the Anona genus. I'm not sure which one you had, but all the ones I've tried have been very tasty!

+Jared Rydelek That definately doesn't looks like its good to eat. A bael fruit has a orange-ish pulp and a amazing aroma. I 've never seen a bael fruit with a brown pulp in my entire life. The one you ate was probably rotten. :( You can get an idea looking at other video's of the fruit on yt
