Hey Carl: A fine job! Funny... I had always been told that Medrona and Arbutus were the same tree... but this seems a lot darker than ours! The splitting sounds the same though! That kit looks really good Carl. I have made quite a few from cheap cups bought at a local bargain store. I throw the plastic exterior away and use the stainless insert as a kit. I normally fix the plastic handle to the mug too.

How do you finish/sand all your projects with the wax, what grit do you start with,how long do you wait and to apply another coat and how do you apply another coat, do you just run through the grits with the wax and buff it at the end please make a video for this or explain to me and great vids! on my lathe i can't use a forstner bit to hollow out. i did buy a woodturning chisels set but they are really tiny and can not reach for enough into the wood piece. how can I still hollow a mug out?

You can hollow it out first with a drill press. This would be the safest way if you only have a small set of turning tools.

I made mine using staves. And I cut the staves into thirds so I could hollow out the cup in three sections. As each section is hollowed, I would glue the next section to it and continue the process.

I just used the live center to go through the center hole. It's not threaded on. I just used it to support the piece, like a jam chuck.

I've recently started watching you videos on recommendation by a few friends. I really enjoy your work and talking, what tool did you use to hollow/shape the inside? It looked like a scraper but cut material faster than any scraper I've used. Secondary question is what is your preferred tool for hollowing open projects (cups, goblets, bowls, etc)?

jwstanch Thank you, I used a Forster bit, then a carbide cutter from Easy Wood Tools. I clean out most things, with a bowl gouge. Then I use a scraper for a final pass.

Do you think there is a kind of finish that can do that? I would love to have a cup entirely made out of wood... :) But I don´t know which finish to use that make the wood waterproof AND is harmless for your health, if you drink out of it...

Carl, quick question - What kind of chuck did you use to hold the waste block on the tailstock? This chuck looks like it could work well on many other projects. I made this cup holder recently and had a tough time milling out the inside because of end grain especially when I got 4 inches in. Suggestions for hollowing out the final couple of inches? I've been watching some of your videos and I love what you do, it's so precise and clean all your work, how many years have you been doing this? I started woodcarving like 5 or 6 years ago and I just can't stop, it's pretty hard using only a hammer and that other thing, don't know thew word in English.
