Galvanized (or powder coated) pipe or square tube is another option. But can be spendy. Probably twice the cost of PostMaster for the square versions. Slipfence has one for $88 at Lowe’s in Idaho.

I have a stockade fence that im going to replace. Round posts were used that were just packed in 2 feet deep. No cement. The plan is to use lifetime posts this time around. Question is, should I or even necessary to widen the hole for the steel posts. Any advice will be helpful. Thanks.

I am definitely doing the metal post. Now to find a video on how to install on an incline. All the videos I have seen have been on level ground. I live in the mountains with level yards being an anomaly.

Does anyone know what the best material is to use along an area where i get saltwater to come up on my grass maybe 2 -3 times a year due to higher tides? With colder winters i will see about 2 feet of frost. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm definitely going to use steel posts on my upcoming fence project. I'm just trying to decide which steel post to get. I see you use Postmaster a lot. I've also seen the Lifetime brand but I'm wondering why Lifetime are so much cheaper than Postmaster. I can't find any good info about a comparison between the two. Does anyone have any experience with the two brands?

Any recommendations for tall posts? Takes about 8 feet above soil to deter deer, and the frost line is somewhere between 4-8 feet in the region. Not finding a lot of options for posts in the 12-16 foot range.

What size post do you Recommend? Currently planning a fence on my property and the price difference between a 4x4 and 6x6 is staggering

You have great videos. Good information and you know what you are talking about. This one doesn't address DIY people that maintain their own fence. I replace a post or two a year on my old fence. No big deal. Less than $20 to replace a wood post and concrete. I like the wood aesthetic. A lot of people here don't like the steel aesthetic. We have high winds fairly often and they sway in the wind. They don't break, but after a year or two its common to see they aren't straight along the top. That could be the installation. I'm not sure everyone knows what they are doing when they install ANY fence. I've seen some pretty bad fences around here of all kinds. I know I've talked to a lot of people here that don't like their steel post fence.

I just set 14 Lifetime steel posts on a 91-foot run along my side yard. Only thing I don't understand about the Lifetime posts is why they sell them with a separate 4" top flange that attaches with a single tiny screw. It just seems like a flimsy way of attaching the top rail so I'm not using them. I installed the posts exactly per the manufacturer's directions, setting them 24" deep in 8-10" post holes with wet poured concrete. I'll hang the rails this week, then I'm doing solid board on board pickets to hopefully lower the sound from the highway next to me. I went steel because I plan/hope to live here a long time and don't want to reset them 10-15 years out when I'm in my 60's. Thanks for all the advice Joe!

I will add to my comment that I would 100% try driving the steel posts next time. It's much less work to dig a hole for a steel post than a 4x4, but much, much less work to just drive the things and not dig at all. I have a chain link highway fence next to me and it occurred to me that those steel posts were driven over 50 years ago and they are still there doing their job!

I’m getting quotes for a new fence. The difference in cost between steel post and wood post isn’t as large as I thought.

Set the end of the post on fire, add several coats of linseed oil. Every year after add a coat of oil. The issue is most home owners are lazy or don't know how to take care of things.

Your adding oil to the post as it sits in the ground? How?

Not everyone wants to do that every year . Also wood warps, and is susceptible to the forces of nature. No where near as durable as steel post . Albeit , the steel post cost like 6 times more 😅

I think the best quality is clearly a steel post, I myself went with wood about 18 years ago and the fence is crap. Lol
