Like fencing I suppose, controlling the line and not giving space for the opponents point (strike) to come through

Yes, fencing is a pretty good comparison for this concept actually. The idea is to restrict the space the opponent has to use and attack in the same action. Thank you for your comment Andrew. Good observation.
