The wooden dummy form by Sifu Donald Mak. The characteristic of the form is the symmetry of drills.

Sweet. Having some friends who are into 3D animation I do know that this represents a lot of work. So double five points, one for the good wooden dummey form, and then for the work to make it an animated model. I guess on your workstation you can rotate the mocie and look at it from any angel. If you could motion capture someone doing his form, you coukd actually make a computer_sifu who corrects your form. Grat work silk ;-))

nice job giving the dummy a realistic "rattle" in response to the movements.

I love the repeated Tong Sao's before the stepping bonsao.... I have this in my formal drills with the Gary Lamb system.... the opening of the Wooden Dummy form i so applicable to Chi Sao pactice.... In fact I am finding that the more I apply these form movements in class during drills I become very effective... Maintaining posture seems to be the key and remaining attached.... it all seems to work when my kung fu conditioning.. Pugilism is good.... love the vid

@xrl2008 Thank you for your patience with me. My admitted ignorance of stationary arms comes from me wanting challenging arms punched at me but were also safe. That is why I invented robot arms that do just that. I highly agree with you that having a block and counter strike sequence already practiced as a reflex, will be much faster in real life. You're a real gentleman having taken the time to help someone who should have studied wing chun more before opening my mouth. I will look into more.

@rbt4rbt I rarely reply to comments, assuming viewers of this clip are familiar with Wing Chun. However many comments appear not made by people knowing enough Wing Chun. That's the reason of this reply: Wing Chun is a comprehensive martial art training system, if not complete. Skills have to be built or trained systematically with patience by different methods.

And without 'sticking' to the dummy it seems? Sometimes an evolutionary path turns out to be a dead end. The sub species then dies out.

Great! You should take advantage of the same 3d animation to create videos of it from other angles. Thanks!

The methods or stages are: 1. Three forms for basic concept. Namely, "Siu Lim Tao" for fundamental concept, hand movements and internal strength, where the later is the most important; "Chum Kiu" for whole body force generation, linear and circular; "Biu Jee" for applying speed. 2. Wooden Dummy: applying combined movements and concepts with static reference, which is the non-moving dummy.

I only know a little of wing chun, and of the little, there's a lot I like about it, but what I don't like is working with stationary arms to mimic a block. I'd much rather use arms that come out and return at real human speeds, and have them come out at random with no telegraph.
@xrl200812 жыл бұрын
@rbt4rbt I had the idea of a "perfect robot arm" when I was green in WC. But now I understand that arms are only of tactical use in real Kung Fu fighting. The real and true power comes from the maximum use of your whole body mass and reaction, which is, the strategical and decisive power of WC and KF in general. For safety issue, find a good Sifu and friendly training partner(s). I believe most WC schools are friendly. Glad to share.

3. Chi Sao: training of usable actions and reactions with human training partners in highly real-life but yet safe fighting situation. The "arms" you want are found in stage 3. :)
@rbt4rbt12 жыл бұрын
@xrl2008 No doubt power comes from the body, not just the arms. I've watched several videos on Sifu "real speed" training. So many were being "blocked" by punches that were not even going to reach anyway, or the telegraph is so obvious. For instance, yesterday my friend who is a boxing trainer was over and he said he can punch simultaneously as the other person started the punch. I said if that were true, it was ONLY because the other person gave a tel, otherwise it would be impossible or luck.

@Marriagison Not really. You can see everything the CGI person does so there for NOT useless. It would be useless if you couldn't see what the person was doing which isn't the case here.

As far as animation goes, I guess this is good. However, this is a very poor demo of this form. If the creator used a live model with 'dot' imaging, the guy does not know the body movements within the form. If this is just an animation with no live person, which I doubt because of the nice work with the arms and their cutting, it leaves out more than 1/2 the form. EG: the first gan is done with the hips, the second [coming back] one the arms are thrown. That is just 2 of ten techniques missed by this dummy in the first 2 sets! As I tell everyone, WC is the most abused style out there. There is no place for animation if it sucks as bad as this.
