Is This The Biggest Sprinkler My Trash Pump Can Handle?

I wanted to find out if my cheap trash pump could handle a larger sprinkler so I could be more effective at irrigating my fields.

The pump I've used for the past 2+ years is the DuroMax 2" trash pump (purchase yours here: amzn.to/2QSUuDM). Its been reliable and effective at pumping water from our pond..
This new sprinkler head is capable of doing upwards of 70 gallons per minute and up to 95' radius. We're getting closer to 50' radius with the trash pump, but its still putting out close to 1" per hour on the 100' circle.

I just got done installing drip irrigation for my 10 acres of trees. Took a lot of time to engineer it and figure out all the parts I'd need because there isn't a lot of information out there on building commercial-sized drip systems, but did ultimately complete a workable network. Of course you probably already know the advantages of drip (less volume required from your pump, and not watering stuff you don't want to grow, i.e., weeds and grass). If you do eventually go to drip and have questions, let me know. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but definitely have some knowledge now that I've built a large-scale system. Farm's looking great. Keep up the good work.

Appears to be shooting out a good amount of water! One thing that we found helpful when we started using overhead irrigation is to put out three or so small containers in a line extending from the sprinkler to the outside edge of where the water stops. This will measure how much water is being applied in given areas, and help you decide how long you should run the pump/sprinkler before moving it :)

Did you ever run into any issues with your sprinklers clogging up on any of your setups? I'm designing a setup for my house since there are threats of wildfires constantly and I am going to use our pond with a couple trash pumps.

My very first setup which used much smaller household type sprinklers would get clogged regularly. These big rain guns have a 8-12mm opening and have never gotten clogged. This year we had more algae and aquatic grass growing that would get caught up in the intake. Putting the intake on a float would help because right now my intake is just laying in the mud.

@@WoodsTreeFarm Hey, I just wanted to follow up. I setup two of the 1 1/4" rain gun sprinklers off of a single 2" trash pump and it works great. I did the same thing with the intake by adding a float. Thanks for the info! I will do a video of my setup soon.

Do you use the same type system to water your flowers? If not, how do you keep your flowers watered? I am experimenting now in a small pumpkin patch with gravity drip irrigation from our pond.

Yes, I used the same sprinkler/pump on flowers. This past year I didn't need to water much. We got pretty good rainfall throughout the growing season. I've never done anything with drip irrigation.

Trash pumps don't have a lot of pressure but have a lot of flow. Your best bet is to get a transfer pump or a PTO pump and engine, those have high pressure and flow. Your current pump might run a impact but probably not a gun, a pto pump could run up to a 200 gun if it was big enough. Bigger sprinklers require more pressure to push the water out of bigger nozzles.

im thinking about getting one of these pumps, have you found that sprinkler irrigation is better than just letting the hose run and flood irigatiing? or is that too much water for the little trees? Thanks for the vid!

I have learned our soil drains poorly, so its rather easy to drown trees with too much water.

A trash pump can pump dirty water with solids up to a certain size where many other pumps are for clean water only

What size pump discharge and what size sprinkler hose?

There's a link to the pump in the description. It's 2in intake and discharge. I run 2in layflat hose to the sprinkler, then the sprinkler is 1.5in.

@@WoodsTreeFarm I have a job to do that requires a 3” pump with 3- 2” sprinklers. I’m trying to evaporate water out of a large pond. Do you think it would work? I do expect this to take weeks. I am wondering if the hose and sprinkler will hold up. I’ve never put a sprinkler on a pump before.
