Retired fireman here - the pump style is a centrifugal pump. Centrifugal pumps have what is called “100% Slippage” meaning when the pump is turning and the discharge side is closed (not flowing) the insides of the pump continue to turn without any need for a relief valve. The only concern to be aware of is the water inside the pump housing overheating resulting in water vapor (essentially steam) which can damage the pump’s impellers or housing - essentially ruining the pump. To prevent the pump from overheating keep some water flowing through it. Feel the pump housing with your bare hand to gauge if its overheating. If it is warm or hot you need to get water moving through it to cool it down, but other than the overheating/cavitation concern there is no problem with occasionally stopping the flow through a centrifugal pump. Cavitation sounds like rocks inside the pump. Note: a blocked suction strainer/intake can cause a similar problem. I have this same pump. I reduced the factory 2” National Pipe Thread (NPT) outlet to 1.5” National Standard Thread (NST aka Fire Hose thread) since I have several sections of old fire hose I can run directly off that. You can buy the reducer I mentioned and even a reducer from whatever you need to Garden Hose (GH) thread from a good pipe and irrigation supply company. Good luck!

Most of these pumps have a drain plug that is 3/4" threads on the bottom of the pump. Get yourself a 3/4" brass garden hose adapter and thread it into that hole, now you can just plug your garden hose in right there. To plug the hole later you can just use a standard garden hose cap with a washer. (Even if you don't hook a hose here I prefer to install a nice brass garden hose cap instead of the plastic POS it comes with) Also a great place to attach a cheap pressure gauge, if you're interested.

the pump needs water flow to not overheat, on my setup i use a 3/4 relief valve, same as i use on my deepwell home water system, at about 80-85 psi it opens, on my home sys it keeps the captive air tank from overpressuring should the elect switch stick, on the pump setup it allows water to recirculate while the nozzle is closed, keeping the pump cool. my pump is a fire pump, twin impeller, at 90% throttle it will charge a 1 1/2, and a 1 in fire hose at approx 125 psi, if i close the nozzle while using i have to keep water moving, or risk destroying the pump seals. hope this helps

with that setup like it is I can see something breaking soon. Probably the pump. one thing you can probably do is add more sprinklers. there is some back flow going from 2" to 5/8's so my question is what happens to the unused water being pumped in. Soooooo many questions on this type of setup. btw I would think a splitter that you can make to go from 2" to two 5/8s connection would be a lot better and less strain on your pump, using both sides of the T at the time the pump is running???....
@TheOhioOutdoorsman13 жыл бұрын
The water sits in the pump housing until it is circulated out through the hose. The pressure is around 35lbs and since it is a turbine pump, water stoppage does not mean pump stoppage. The main concern with this particular setup is when no water is flowing for a long duration. There is the potential for the pump to overheat. The next version of the pump will include a bypass to always keep water flowing even with there is not flow through the end being used.

It's just a centrifugal pump, essentially it'll recirculate itself. And running it with no water output is called dead heading, its not an ideal situation. You will prematurely wear out the pump, but for short stints, it won't be enough to notice. Also, there are camlock to garden hose adapters, then your house would just connect directly to the discharge rather than to a whole contraption

I also have about 20' of grade change up the hill from the pump with about 500' of 3/4" garden hose so that I can reach some trees I planted. My problem is getting the pump to fully prime and then be able to attach the garden hose. The only way to get it to fully prime is to have the air cap off on the top or the hose disconnected on the discharge side. Then once fully primed I don't have a way to get the hose reattached without turning it down so far that it loses it's pressure. Been fighting with this thing for two weeks now trying to figure out. Any ideas welcomed!

Have you tried a hose splitter where the water hose attaches to the reducer?
@hotbam37 Жыл бұрын
Add a simple valve as close to the discharge outlet as you can. Disconnect hose and when priming have the valve open to release water right as it exits the pump. Once primed, close the valve so you can connect your garden hose to it and then reopen the valve to move water through garden hose. Old plumber's trick for repairing lines that can't be turned off. Attach an open valve to pipe, then close the valve to stop the water. You could also do this a hose splitter as mentioned above. just close and open each side as needed to help prime pump and you won't need to remove the hose.

@NelsonBigGunP200Fan Жыл бұрын
You could do this yes but you'd be limiting the output since a garden hose is so small. Plus you don't want to do this for too long because you'd be dead heading the pump which can damage it over time. Unless you ran it at lower throttle it wouldn't be as bad. Get some hoses the same size and a stand also the same size and a bigger head say 1 to 2" input and you'd be covering a larger area and having more output as well. But trash pumps have low pressure and high output so they're not meant for irrigation use.

Just be sure that you are allowed. If so, this would make a great way to do it.

Greetings from Northwest Ohio. This is intriguing, I always assumed you couldn’t run these types of pumps without output or they would overheat and fry the pump... have you been regularly stopping the output flow without any known issues (or do you not use the system in this manner often)?

I have been using the pump like this every since this video was published. I have not noticed any issues, or changes in the performance of the trash pump when used with or with these attachments. I will say that when I use the hand sprayer, I try not to let it run too long with no water going through it. Again, I have seen no performance change or wearing of the pump either way though.

Water might be boiling since it's not coming out as fast as it should

You don't even need the 2 inch flat discharge hose.

Why not use several sprinklers at the same time? The pump should be able to handle it.

At the time I only had the one. I now have a half a dozen and they work great!

If you use a hand sprayer and don't spray most likely you will cause cavitation within the pump and if you do it long enough you will burn it up. When this happens don't scald yourself
@TheOhioOutdoorsman13 жыл бұрын
To date, the pump has been working fine even with long durations of no water flow. This being said, the next video will show a new adapter I have that has a bypass when the outlet is cut off.

I might even tear down the pump housing just to see if there is any damage on video after the year of usage in displayed in this video.

Thanks for the insight. Currently the pump looks brand new still from the outside. Here in the spring, I will tear the housing down just to look at it and make sure things are still in order.
