Turning a Salt Box - Lidded Walnut Salt Cellar
I used a thick chunk of very dry walnut for this project, and although I’m really happy with how it came out, I found the diameter just a little bit too big for me to be able to lift the lid off easily and securely, so after it was completely finished, I turned a small finial and added that to the top of the lid to be used as a handle. While it is quite functional, I don’t care for it so much aesthetically so I didn’t take any nice pictures of the competed salt box.

Hi Helen, thanks so much. I use this in my kitchen, though I added a goofy little finial after the fact that I don’t think looks particularly attractive, it it does make it more functional. I got an amazingly good fit on the lid - even though the walnut is kiln dried, there have been days this summer where I couldn’t get the lid off because the humidity made it swell *just*!enough 😂

Funny thing about this piece - it’s in my kitchen and I use it every day. Except a handful of days in the summer where the wood swells and moves just enough that I can’t get the lid off! It was a super-precise fit, but being as this walnut was kiln dried probably 15 years ago I’m stunned that it moves at all!

Hi Keith, thanks so much for subscribing, I really appreciate it! It took me a while to figure out what kind of format I was going to use for my videos and had a little stretch where I used music, mostly so that I could listen to music in the shop while working and not get slapped with copyright infringement. However after doing a few voiceover videos you guys made it clear you liked that style so that’s how it’ll be. Thanks for the feedback 😊

@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! After the fact, I did actually add a finial so there was a handle. Not my best design, as I was going for something easy to grip - came out looking like a Santa hat sticking straight up 😂. But it holds my salt and I’ve stopped noticing it so much anymore. Thanks again for watching, and for leaving a comment. I love to hear from you guys!

Thanks John! I use this every day 😊 I used OB’s Shine Juice as the finish. It’s a friction polish made from shellac, denatured alcohol and boiled linseed oil. Search YT for the recipe but I think it’s equal parts of each.

I think that is a handsome box. The walnut has a beautiful finish; what product did you use for this? I've been turning bowls for the past year so I've decided to try a box for a little variety. Your video gives me a good insight in how I would do this. I have some cherry and walnut pieces too small for bowls so they will be good candidates for this project. Do you like your carbide tools?
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! Thank you, I’m happy with how this turned out-I use it every day! I’m pretty sure I used OB Shine Juice on it, which is a friction polish made of BLO, DNA, and shellac. It’s holding up fine but I think for future utility pieces like this I’ll either use the Tried & True Original Wood Finish (I used this on the Cherry Burl Travel Mug) or Mahoney’s walnut oil and then use the Beall buffing system on top. Cherry or walnut will both make lovely little boxes. To be honest I’m not super happy with the carbides. I bought them initially because I think one of the things that stopped me from venturing into turning was that sharpening totally intimidated me. I still use them for certain things, and the negative rake carbide is a must (at least for me) for using with resin, but I prefer the traditional tools for most things.

I don’t remember exactly but I use this in my kitchen and it’s small enough that I can lift the lid off with my left hand and get a pinch with my right, but it’s big enough that I can scoop out half a teaspoon or whatever and not have to refill it right away
