Welcome to today's sweet woodturning project. I made a sugar container from an old oak log, which has been lying in my workshop. I found it in a park last year.
I hope you enjoy the video!

I just love watching things like this. My favorite part is when the wood grain begins to come alive and really pop during the staining and polishing process. ❤️ Absolute Art!!!

That sound at 1:12 when the rough becomes smooth and you can hear it and almost feel it through the video. I think that is why we do this. That is my favorite part.

Sweet Little Thang (SRV sang that song😁) but you made this. I like yours better at the table - songs are for the living room. Nice to have logs laying about too👍 Thanks for showing us how you made it🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷

I know you said oak but when I first saw it on the lathe the first thing I thought was poplar. The purple and a bit of green made me think that. Just goes to show how wrong one can be. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day.

I'd swear that's mineral stain poplar not oak. I've turned many pieces that look like this. Nice job on the lidded bowl or jar!

Nice grain on the wood and turning. I would also like to know the finish you used that you could put sugar in.

The project is absolutely gorgeous, but that doesn't look like any Oak wood I've ever seen. It's missing the characteristic Ray Cells that create the tiger striped pattern in oak most times. I'm at a loss for what it could be, but I really don't think that's oak, I think something far nicer. Anyway, really nice work once again!

My guess is linseed oil (NOT boiled linseed oil - that is not food safe) or walnut oil (specifically for food safe wood finishes, kitchen stuff won't work as well). Shellac is food safe, too. Mineral oil generally is as well, but is still a petroleum product.

Nice of course. And sugar, as a result, has no impregnation smell ??? I won't believe it until I know the name of the sugar bowl impregnation.
