Gotta get me some flame box elder now! I do both 'flat' woodworking and turning. All my drills and palm sander are DeWalt because they fit both my wife's hands and mine and of course, we interchange batteries. Same with the right angle I keep at the lathe for sanding. A coring setup or perhaps a hollowing set with laser would be my 'maybe, someday' purchase. I use a SawStop table saw. Besides the safety features, it's also the most accurate and precise of the (four?) tablesaws I've had over the years. I do rough breakdowns off the back of my 27-year-old Chevy pickup, so I count it as an infeed. I use the cheapo Harbor Freight workbench as my out feed / sharpening station. Came late to turning (woodworking for more decades than I like to share) and started with an extended Excelsior to get my toes in water. That one went to my brother when I got my PM 2014, which I truly love, except it's on the light side. Rikon slow speed grinder with both white AO and CBN wheels and OneWay jigs for lathe tools and establishing bevels on chisels and plane blades. I have a 'regular' grinder which I picked up at a garage sale and haven't decided yet how it fits in. All sharpening and honing is on stones and leather. Waterstones for bench tools, diamond for carving. On my non-turning side, I am a hand tool guy and very rarely buy anything new. I love restoring old tools to usefulness and of course, the edge doesn't care what the imprint on the handle says, so I have a hodge podge. The tools I reach for most often are a dead heat between a pre-war 3/4" Stanley 750-pattern bench chisel, a 6" pocket rule and a very old Starret 6" combinatin square that was laying out on my uncle's bench when he passed away. I pick it up every day usually, and I can always feel him there. I could go on but this is long. And hey, you asked. BTW, I, too am a member of the funnel club. Figuring out the insert repair can be fun!
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael! I did ask, and am glad for your lengthy reply 😁. I am lousy with hand tools, planes in particular. Watched tons of videos but can’t get them set properly. My dad is a retired tool & die maker, machine builder, and machine repairman as well as a woodworker who (until my stepmom had a stroke in 2020) frequented estate and garage sales. He has a pretty impressive stash of vintage and antique tools he had been repairing and selling on eBay so I have access to lots of good old tools. 😃

Very nice colours in that wood, andyou got a trailer full of it. I think you need to take a trip to the little country up north with some pieces. Only a couple of hours driving i think. LOL What i need in my shop of tools, well actually i need to tripple the size of my shop. 2 meter wide and 4 meters depth now. I am just renting appartment from my cousin and have the shop for free and free electricity there. Wish i had bigger shop so i could have a big lathe like you have, i have just a medium lathe now with max 30 cm size for turning. And a pocketsize bandsaw that takes 8 cm higt. :) I have a lot of fun and good time in my small shop and that is good enough for me. Bailey is so cute and nice. Take care and stay safe Lisa & Bailey. Hello Hans Olav! I would drive some to you if I could! And I think as long as you are having fun in your shop and turning things on your lathe then everything is good! 30cm is not too small - sometimes the really big bowls are harder to sell so I like to do all sizes 😁

That is some gorgeous wood Lisa! Seeing you mount the first blank gave me lathe envy LOL! My HF 12×36 can't really do anything bigger than 11" and it has to be really well balanced because my slowest speed is 600. Needless to say, I battle vibrations a lot when maxing out my lathes capacity. As far as other shop tools... I've got Ryobi tablesaw, sliding miter saw & 18v cordless drill, Rigid corded oscillating tool and worm drive circular saw, Craftsman reciprocating saw, Dewalt corded drill, Echo 590 chainsaw and a WEN 10" bandsaw. The bandsaw just arrived today-it was lightly used & cost a third what they are new. I've also have a 1/2" hammer drill I rarely use. My shop time is centered almost exclusively around turning so my wish list a bigger lathe and DUST COLLECTION system!! Thanks for sharing Lisa! Stuart

My first successfully turned bowl was flame box elder that had fallen through our fence from our neighbors yard. I've turned a few others since then, and It was always really catchy and prone to tear out compared to the other woods I've turned.
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart! This is my first time turning it and it’s still pretty wet even though it was likely dead standing. It’s definitely more fibrous than what I’m used to but if it’s not punky it hasn’t been terrible. I’ve got a ton of it to get through so we’ll see!
@StuartJanssen2 жыл бұрын
@@LisaRamlow its definitely really aesthetically pleasing when turned. The tree it came from in our neighbor's yard is, I'm fairly sure, dead so hopefully I'll be getting some more in the future. Hopefully not through our fence though, hah.

Nice coring. I like watching those jigs in use, even if they aren't that flashy, still interesting efficiency. I also enjoyed the amount of real time video you included, Lisa. Box elder is one of my favourites. Cuts like butter, as heard by the swish of your edge on that wood. I recently read that the red fungus is thought to be introduced by maple bugs, which are plentiful in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where the nickname Manitoba Maple comes from. I didn't know about UV causing colour loss. I'll keep that in mind until someone proves or disproves it. About tools, I think I'd occasionally enjoy a planer. I recently laminated a maple sandwich on cherry bread, hand flattened... or not. Glad it was for a utility piece so a bit of dust & CA was fine, glad I didn't count on it for something larger. The thing is, without a table saw and jointer and possibly band saw (or the ability to use them), I'd be planing scraps and limited patterned laminations. I don't think I'm making excuses, just talking myself out of something I don't have room for or time to properly learn. :) Very good demo and satisfying turning to watch.
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jay! I have no idea if the boxelder bugs introduce the fungus but it’s certainly possible. At our previous house we had a ton of boxelder trees (and bugs) but I wasn’t turning them so I considered them junk trees. How I want some of those big things now! But I have enough from this haul to keep me busy for a long time 😁
@jayscott3062 жыл бұрын
@@LisaRamlow Well, your experience might disprove the whole maple bug theory. Regardless, a great wood type that I think I've taken for granted. A local turner had a box elder tree taken down recently. Our club will be flush with projects featuring it, soon. It was rotten at the pith, so not ideal, but the spalting we're finding in those cuts is fantastic. I have three more blanks dried that I need to get to. Mom got the first one. :)

I'm a big fan of Ridgid tools but more for my job as a handyman than pen turning. I have their 10" dual bevel miter saw, not the slider, and an old, beat up but still gets the job done, 12" dual bevel slider. It's a beast to lug around, thus the smaller 10". Most of my nail guns are Ridgid. My Ridgid worm drive saw will rip through anything, but heavy to lug around, so I mostly use my little Porter Cable sidewinder, another tool that takes a beating and keeps on cutting. And finally, I have the same 18V drill/impact driver set in my home shop, which I've been using maybe 8 years or so. They're good solid tools.👍🏻 Okay, you asked. Back to the video! 😊😊

Hey Lisa! When you start to get that knocking on the side of the bowl it's caused by the bevel bouncing across the end grain. I usually bring the tool off the bevel when that happens and sorta shear cut with the handle way down at my knees. A big heavy traditional scraper works as well

Not sure why things were bumping when you got to the rim of the bigger bowl. First suspect would be that the worm screw and the chuck jaws fit may not have been really tight. Part of why I prefer the 2 5/8 inch wide jaws on my Vicmark chucks and a drilled recess. A 14 inch bowl is about as big as I would turn without going to bigger jaws, but not many forstner bits much bigger as well as having a drill press big enough to drive a big bit. I do have an older Woodcut coring system and the early ones had a hollow ground on the top of the cutter. It seemed to eject the shavings really well. Just got the new Max 4 or whatever they call it, but haven't had a chance to test drive it yet. I will be doing the next club demo with the Baxter threading jig. As for cordless tools, other than hand saws, I have all DeWalt. First real experience, maybe 30 years ago, was seeing one fall off of the top of a 5 story building. Other than small damage to the casing, it still ran fine. I had my old Dewalt at the repair place and the guy there told me to hang onto it. He said the new ones with the fancy electronics, when they went bad, it cost more to repair then than it would to buy a new one. I do like the clutch systems on the old drills better than the new ones. Almost all the local construction people use DeWalt, though I see some Makita. Look up Project Farm for about any tool you want to buy. He is not sponsored by anyone, and buys every thing himself so he is not biased. I think he is having a lot of fun with it. Robust now has 2 S curve tool rests out, and Brent said they were angled, but I haven't seen one to be able to tell if I approve or not. Don't get much Box Elder out west here. I seem to remember that it is kind of stinky. Also it is difficult to get good clean cuts. I do know some of the marine finishes have UV inhibitors in them, but only way I ever heard of keeping the colors was some one who was an expert with an air brush, painted their pieces. It does go brown eventually. I think exposure to air also makes the colors fade.

That is some beautiful looking wood. As a Carpenter I actually prefer Dewalt Impacts and drill, the old porter cable circular saws, Makita new circular saws. All portable table saws suck and are overused. I can cut just as good free hand with a circular saw. One tool I am going to be getting soon is a good band saw, been looking at the Jet brand.
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Hi John! I have Porter Cable routers and my all-time favorite random orbit sander is an older PC that unfortunately died on me. My table saw is more a hybrid style - not a cabinet saw but not portable either. Cast iron wings and 36” to the right of the blade. Super happy with that thing. I am slightly terrified of circular saws - I’d much rather push the wood thru the blade than the blade thru the wood. And I am definitely terrified of free-handing with a circular saw. My dad has a small PC trim saw that I’m not as afraid of, but if I can get it on the table saw, that’s where it goes! Lately all I’m building are frames for Marie & Lori’s artwork, so I have a dado blade in the table saw and rough cut the poplar slightly oversized on the bandsaw. Then run them thru the planer or drum sander so I don’t have to switch between the dado set and the ripping blade 😂

The different grain densities from the burland spalting could be causing tool chatter . And tool slippage might be indication your tool is getting dull , box elder is a hard wood and might have a high silica content , from ground minerals Why do you wear stretch knit gloves ? They can catch on an edge of turning stock and pull your hand between the tool rest and stock injuring your hand . Turning green timber slings a lot of water around , depending how fresh cut it is . Nalgene 10 mil exam gloves , protect your hands from flying chips , water , and if caught in turning , they tear away . I have been using them for 4 years , and have had some tears , but no hand pulled into the works . No nicked fingers , just pull a fresh glove from the box and continue on I would have removed the chuck from the drive arbor , and driver the drive screw on by hand . Place a pair of wedges from opposite sides of lathe bed and lift the block up and spin on with hand wheel Your bowl is amazing an exterior clear finish should have UV blockers
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary! I understand gloves and long sleeves are potential safety issues, but I have not had success with any exam gloves keep the heat from dry wood from being pretty uncomfortable, and I find the top of the flute of the bowl gouge tends to irritate my fingers so I've been using a batting glove (which didn't hold up well enough) and then switched to these rubber/nitrile coated gloves. They fit me nice and tight and I am extra careful in knowing where my hands are.
@garyjohnson92972 жыл бұрын
Try this , tak a fine diamond hone , and soften the edges of the flute slightly and soften the edges of skews and scrapers , they will mover over tool rest easier , and not dig into tool rest and drag , requiring less effort to move

I found whole tree of that on the beach about 12"×25' long easy to turn now I know the name of it.changing to Dewalt tools
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! It does turn easy for sure - they consider it soft maple so makes sense. It’s funny I switched from Dewalt to Ridgid. It’s been probably 20 years but the Dewalt batteries just were not lasting and I figured a lifetime warranty on the tools and batteries was worth a shot. I’m sure the new Dewalt stuff is using different technology and I have other Dewalt tools…although now that I’m thinking about it my Dewalt angle grinder just puked 🤔

My wife worked for DeWalt for almost 20 years, so all my stuff is yellow. My big tools are a scattered mess of whatever I found cheap. 😁

Hi Tim! I do have a weird mix as well - Hitachi dual bevel sliding miter saw, Craftsman Professional band saw, Laguna planer and lathe, Ridgid jointer and table saw, Performax (Jet) drum sander and a Penn State dust collector. The Laguna’s are new within the last several years and I permanently borrowed the drum sander from my dad, but I’ve had everything else since 2007-ish. Gotten lucky with my big stuff for sure.

That’s very specific - what for, if I might ask? Box elder is so often considered junk wood by anyone but turners

@@LisaRamlow i have a small lathe and not a lot of tools "yet"i think they would make nice small boxes :) it is box elder after all :) i live in oklahoma i dont know that i have ever seen one in real life

The wood turner Just Kinsley does turn a lot of Box Elder maybe if you contact him he’ll have some insight on how to keep the red

Tell me about your coring system and how you like it? Also, what does your kiln look like?
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
This is the Woodcut Bowl Saver coring system and I like it very well. They have a larger one now but with the same setup. It’s easy to use and feels safe and sturdy. Here’s a link to the build video for my kiln, which works great kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5-sanWClNWJba8

Beautiful wood but has a peculiar smell. I guess I am a Dewalt tool guy, and what I want most is more time in the shop,lol.

You have too many hobbies 😂. I actually didn’t notice a smell, but lemme tell you about the 3 cords of red oak firewood we had delivered 🤢

That’s when ridgid made good tools…. I bought the same set and it won’t hold a charge, keep shutting down, service dept is almost impossible to contact. I went with Milwaukee…. They don’t disappoint….
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Huh. I haven’t ever had to contact them so we’ll see how it goes. We have 3 other drills and 2 impact drivers that are much newer than my original set, maybe bought in 2017, that are ok so far 🤞

i have the rigid lifetime tools have replaced 1 drill and the drill press also have the bandsaw idont like it
@LisaRamlow2 жыл бұрын
Agreed - had the bandsaw and hated it. Got rid of it not too long after I'd bought it cuz I was doing bandsaw boxes at the time and I could not get it to track right. My dad is a retired machine builder and repairman and tool & die maker as well as a woodworker himself and he couldn't get it either. Everything else, I am super happy with
