Wow! Never seen the jaws snap off with a flying bowl. A little black or brown ca glue and it should be fine. It will just give it more character. 😊

Yeah, new one for me, too. Still not really sure what happened.

I feel your pain! Ha so I am not alone! Yes I enjoyed the video. Never thought about using the pipe fittings to hold it while it dries. Thanks!

Never tried drying in the oven, microwave a few times where you can really control time and heat. Nice piece of Manitoba maple.

FWIW, my two pen’neth. At about 12:50 you see the (filled) crack pattern across the bottom. That looks compromised to me. Then when you’re turning off the tenon you’re pushing the gouge both towards and away from the live center instead of towards the headstock. I suspect that put additional cracking pressure on it. Using that scraper to finish put too much torque on it and it broke. You might have been able to save it using a swept-back bowl gouge, a little tail stock pressure and much lower RPM to take off that final nubbin, a la Phil Anderson of Shady Acres.

When I’m turning the bottom of the bowl with the Cole jaws like you were, especially a big bowl like that, I make sure I’m still using the tail stock center to prevent the bowl from flying out. Those buttons on the Cole jaws don’t have enough gripping power to hold a big bowl like that. Don’t ask me how I know. Turn the button as small as you can next to the live center, then sand the rest down. It’s a lot safer. As for finishing the bowl, I would mix up a batch of thick epoxy, and either use some black coloring or use some metallic dust to make the finished bowl look like kintsugi, a Japanese art form where a broken pottery piece is joined back together with urushi lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum powders. Look it up online, there are some cool pictures of the finished pottery. By the way, Cole or kohl in German means cabbage in German. That’s why it’s called Cole slaw. Don’t know why the word is used for the chuck jaws.

yeah, it was compromised. I could see it on the inside and knew I would have to fill it with something strong on the bottom outside, too, but I wasn’t able to get it to that point
