Purple heart is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourite wood to work with. Putting it in sunlight with some heat will just make the purple even more vibrant as well. It browns when worked.

If you put the purpleheart in the Sun it will turn purple again. They always turn reddish brown when they're finished. It turns purple through oxidation. I've heard acetone can speed it up but I just leave it on the porch for a couple hours and in a few days it gets very purple again.

Nice wood turning, Peggy. Suggestion: Drill holes for your face plate screws before installing them. This will help eliminate broken screws; particularly on hard dense woods. Use a little bees wax or paraffin on the screws before putting them in. This will help them go in easier.

Purple Heart is beautiful, but it's a strange wood. When first exposed to oxygen, it goes from reddish brown to purple, and then fades back to reddish brown as it ages. I've seen people using heat, either in an oven or flame, to turn the wood purple again. From the experiments I've seen done in an oven (at 350F for an hour+) to heat the wood through and not just the surface, it will stay purple much longer.

To avoid broken screws, 1) drill a pilot hole unless the screw is self-taping, 2) if the screws are Chinese, use only once, perhaps twice if a pilot hole was drilled. I have not seen a Chinese screw that wouldn’t fatigue and fail unexpectedly.

Some of us live by for the videos you post. To miss a week with the excuse of: “I had some home improvement projects to work on.” You know the old saying: “Excuses are like buttholes, everyone has one!” I love purple heart. Don’t know what it is but it’s beautiful! If you can expose a half inch of the broken screw trying using a cordless or corded reversible drill motor, tighten the chuck as tight as possible, reverse the drill and back the broken screw out. The other thing is use a pneumatic die grinder or a DREMEL tool to remove the material around the broken screw. Might save you from having to extract a broken drill on top of all the other broken stuff in your piece.

If you'll drag the threads of your screws through a piece of wax before you secure them in the faceplate, they'll be much less likely to heat up and snap from the friction of driving them in or removing them. It doesn't take much. A piece of wax from a toilet bowl ring works well and is relatively inexpensive, but you also can use a candle or piece of paraffin. In an extremely hard, dry wood like purpleheart, there is considerably more heat generated than when power-driving screws in a wet piece of maple straight from the forest. The heat will work-harden the screws and make them brittle.

That’s a very nice bowl. 👍 I can’t say that I like turning Purpleheart heart very much, but when I do turn it, no matter what I make, it sales fast. I just turned a cigar ashtray last week and sold it the day after I finished it. I did buy carbide tools to turn Purpleheart because, it took forever to turn my first piece. There are two things that will cause Purpleheart to turn purple, heat and UV light. I normally just expose the piece to sun light for a couple of hours for a couple of days to get it to turn purple, then I apply the finish. Oh, if you put a small piece of Purpleheart in a jar with some denatured alcohol, the alcohol will turn purple after a few days.

With reference to your screw problem....you don't need them to be more than an inch into the blank...what you do need are thicker screws. When turning you will hardly ever pull/tear out a screw...I turned a large bowl last week which was hot glued onto a block in the chuck. Use a drill driver and not an impact for setting and removal and swap out the screws every month....purple heart is such nice wood!

That is beautiful Peggy, and you are right Purple Heart can be a challenge to turn. I would much rather turn that than Bloodwood though. My husband glued up a Bloodwood and Ambrosia Maple blank for me. It killed my tools but man did it turn out pretty. Have to put it back on the lathe though I'm not happy with it. Couldn't get the depth inside I wanted. Need to get myself some carbide tools for that rock hard wood. My gouges took a beating. Happy Mothers Day!

A technique I use to remove a broken screw is to use a parting tool and turn a grove on both sides of the screw. I then break off the wood around the screw and like you I then use vise-grips to remove the screw. I broke two screws in the last piece of Purple Heart I turned. Great piece, very pretty.

Thanks , since you didn't show all the removal of the broken screw, this suggestion may work in the future . Instead of using a drill to make a hole try cutting a v shaped gouge around the screw with a carving knife or chisel just low enough to get the vice grips on at an angle. Then unscrew the broken part out using the vice grips as a handle. hope this helps it has always worked for me so far anyway.

Purple heart is a tough wood to work with, but the color of the wood makes it very special. If you heat it with a torch or hot air gun it will get that deep purple look. I hope you learned that if you are going to put a good size screw into purple heart, got to go with a pilot hole first. That stuff is so hard that it can be very tough to work with. I was trying to drill a 2 inch hole through a 3/4" piece once and just wrecked my forstner bit.

I'm told that Purple heart darkens to a chocolate brown with age, but if heated, the Purple color returns. I also broke a drill bit while trying to hollow out the center; I won't do that again (hand power drill).- it was a paddle drill bit with a pilot hole!

Purpleheart has an interesting grain and the color is unusual. I have found that you can increase intensity of the purple with denatured alcohol or heating the wood with a hair dryer, but with exposure to ambient ultraviolet light the purple will eventually turn to brown. Broken screw heads are the reason I don't use a faceplate--too much trouble to remove them.
