I would recommend salad bowl oil as a good food safe finish. It can be found at Woodcraft.

Thats a nice coffee cup. I'm still getting all my tools and lathe parts together. Hope to be trying a few projects soon. Well I have turned a couple of pens. They turned out OK. Turned out, no pun intended. Gonna go for a walk in my woods tomorrow and see if I can find a burl or something. Got a big Pear tree that has to come down. I'll try some of that. Tom

That's a good job. I have to get back to the lathe. I have a piece of Laurel sitting in the chuck since the start of January and it hasn't moved a turn. I was very sick for 2 months back then but the garden has taken over my life recently. Maybe I'll get something done next week. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Hi Carl, I'm 18 and have a lathe and some tools. Problem is that they are cheap and chip and don't stay sharp. Can you recommend any places or specific brands of tools that aren't outrageous? Thanks, Brock.

Bees wax is natural and food safe, used for centuries, and mineral oil is safe as well as it is even sold on the shelf as a laxative. Why is it not food safe if mixed? I speak of mineral oil, not mineral spirits which are not food safe. I have been using mineral oil for decades on cutting boards and wood utensils. Walnut oil is so tasty in a vinaigrette I save it for my salads, but I am sure it makes a great food safe finish on wood. Again, this is one of the best overall channels on youtube!

No matter how long you have been turning in my experience you are going to catch a chisel sometimes. The bowl gouge is more prone to catch. I would go from the outside in, to have less of a chance of catching. Thanks, Carl

hi carl, i think i would actually just leave the coffee holder loose without using glue..just have it as a wooden sleeve...the reason being is that i've had more than one of those thermos things start leaking so it would be nice to be able to throw it away and just slip another one in if needed...but then maybe glue would solve this problem???dont know.... also out of curiousity...what is the name of that big gouge.scraper you use and what wood lathe do you use???...great video yet again!!

what type of stores would i get mineral oil and paste wax locally? (anywhere)

what kind food safe finish? do you have any suggestions?
@CarlJacobson12 жыл бұрын
No you would need to use a food safe finish, but yes then you would not need to put in the plastic insert.
@CarlJacobson13 жыл бұрын
Pearwood should be nice and hard I'd like to see that finished. I've never turn pearwood.

Hello, I just posted a video response about my wood hunt. You know you are responsible for me getting into this! God bless you. Any input on what I think was a good hunt? Got all of them waxed. Remember my first turning was on Oct 7, 2012 so whqt I show might not be the best. Making progress, learning everyday. My shop is a cold place, but it is heaven!

Hey carl, What brand/model of lathe do you use?
@diablothe2nd14 жыл бұрын
from someone new to turning, it's reassuring to see an experienced turner still gets catches with a skew chisel (06:15). At least I know, no matter how much practise I have, I've still got to be wary with that particular tool! :D Question though, the fella that taught me, told me that when i'm carving out the inside, to go from the outside in... and not the inside out (as you've shown).... and never use the bowl gouge in reverse. I'm curious as to why this is?

I have used both the inserts form Craft Supply USA and Woodcraft, (same product manufacturer) and am not too happy with with them the stainless is nice but the lid is sub standard. the slider after a few uses will not lock open or closed. I contacted both suppliers but neither has a fix. Looking for an alternate insert supply if anyone knows of any.

Found a Food Safe Finish Recipe: Beeswax is the most basic and commonly used is for butcher block or wood salad bowls etc. where the polish needs to be food grade. In a double boiler add 40% beeswax to 60% food grade mineral oil like what you find at the pharmacy. You can just reheat and add more mineral oil to make the paste smoother. For non food safe finish use a double boiler again add 1 lb Beeswax (1 pint melted) 1 pint turpentine (odorless preferably) and 1 pint boiled linseed oil.

Could you just turn the wood like you did in the video, but not add the plastic cup? I kinda like just the wood cup. Would you be able to drink out of it if you just used the paste wax and mineral oil or would you have to use something else?
