In this video I create a small vase and do some carving to make it more of a sculptural piece. I’m totally geeked about my new carving and finishing stand from Best Wood Tools, located in TN - check them out for some great woodturning accessories including the carving and finishing post as well as spur drives, a modular tool post system and more!

That is a unique piece Lisa; so glad you like it ! I have a carving stand too. It really is handy when I carve feet. I really like my Oneway live center - it is especially handy with spindle adapter - you can have a chuck at both ends or have the lid on the pot spinning at the same time or have it hold the piece as you part off. I'd probably try to R&R the bearings in the dead live center. And finally I think Baily's tail is going cause he's seeing you nearby. Good to see you again ! Keep 'em coming and take care. -Mike

Hi Mike! Yes, for feet too! That's on my list to do as well, I've not done a footed form yet. Bailey is a pretty good boy but if the choice is between following his beagle nose and being by me, I'm a lonely beagle mom 🤣. Which is why he is never off leash unless we're in the back yard cuz he'd be GONE and then lost cuz that's what beagles do best 🙃

Great results, Lisa. I greatly dislike carving, so all the more impressive to me. I have cobbled together a system for holding my chuck out of my old photography grip. If it can hold a $2000 strobe and battery pack or $40000 in camera and lens it will hold a chuck. Way more costly than your rig, but I had it collecting dust upstairs. Now it collects sawdust and shavings in the shop. Glad to see you back (and Bailey).

Hi Jay! Marie did studio photography way back when and I've stolen parts from and absconded with backdrop and lighting stands and cobbled together things for the shop so I'm right there with you!

Get the robust live center. really happy with mine and I did get both the normal cone and the 4" cone for mine. I use the 4" cone when turning platters. I did geta drill bit and a tap and set and I can also make my own things that screw onto the robust live center. Like I made a wooden end cap that I can screw on that I then use when I do not want to mark up the piece but want the support of using a live center (I do this a lot when I turn my off center pendants. The easy wood live center is also the same and is made by robust but with their name on it instead. Others have 3d printed accessories to go on the end as well instead of drilling and tapping.

Thanks for the info - the Laguna that came with the lathe has the threaded end and a cone but I've not made any accessories for it yet. And now the bearing is going and getting hot but replacing the bearing didn't seem like an option. I'll give the Robust a good look!

Beautiful, Lisa! Now I’ll need to buy a carving stand!😂 I have the 1836 also. Have you ever thought about replacing the banjo with the Oneway? I did about a month ago, and wish I’d have done it a long time ago! Complete game changer!
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 ай бұрын
I've not thought of that but I will admit the Laguna banjo isn't my favorite-even with an added bolt to try and keep the tool post tight the tool rest will sometimes slip and the width sometimes gets in the way. Probably don't even want to know how much the banjo is cuz I've still gotta replace my live center
@Itasca57
@Itasca57 2 ай бұрын
@@LisaRamlow It was right around $350, if I remember correctly. I finally got tired of the Laguna one’s shortcomings, and when the internal bar started to bend, making it too loose when it was positioned in the middle, I decided to go for the Oneway. The whole design is much better than the Laguna. Not only how the tool holder is clamped, but how the banjo internal clamping mechanism works. It takes magnitudes less effort to clamp everything solid. It also opens up your options for 1” tool rests from any manufacturer. Oneway has a great YT video on it.

Hi Lisa. Another excellent video. Thank you. I have a question: how are you finding the Rigid right angle sander? I have the Ryobi right angle drill and overall I lmlike it better than my Wooden Wonders however the trigger sensitivity could be much better. Looking forward to your feedback.

Hi Perry! All my power hand tools are Ridgid cuz of the lifetime warranty, though in 20+ years I've not used it yet. My first regular drill and one battery just started misbehaving and I need to send them back for replacement but I've been ridiculously happy with them. Home Depot is the only place that sells Ridgid so you'll have to look there. I have 3 drills, 2 impact drivers, job site blower, sawzall, and this right angle drill in the cordless models and a few corded tools plus my table saw, jointer and oscillating spindle/belt sander are all Ridgid too and I've had no issues with any of them 👍

I've always meant to ask what the laser does? Does it show you on the outside, where tool is on the inside, if so, how does it know? 🧡
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 ай бұрын
Yes, it gives you the position of the cutter inside the piece. You adjust the laser depending on what you are doing and match it to the angle of the workpiece, since that changes as you progress deeper into the form. You set the wall thickness as an offset from the edge of the cutter to the laser and then when the laser light falls off the workpiece edge, you know the wall thickness is whatever distance you set it to. I wasn't terribly concerned with thickness on this piece because I wanted to leave some extra for the carving process but you can get a very precise and even thickness using this setup.
