You can use a flush trim bit on the edge if you clamp a thicker piece of wood to the other side of your work piece; that will give the router plenty of support to make the cut accurately and cleanly.

I cut some strips of 3/4 stock for edge banding 1/2 plywood shelves. I found clamping a block to the edge to have too much of an angle due to the overhang on the side. A small rabet probably would have done the trick, but I used this method of a tall fence and a flush trim bit with a bearing to speed up fine tuning the fence and it worked great. A lot faster too as once it was setup I could do all 11 shelves at once.

The banding is solid wood banding, glued to the edge of the sheet stock.

I think that any straight bit with ball bearing on the end is the best way how to do this easily and precise

You could have used the same setup with a straight bit w/ bearing. Just slide the fence over until your test piece bumped the bit and eliminate the trial and error.

thank you so much for this idea, im still going to use a flush trim bit with this set up but atleast im not going to try to balance the router on the edge.
