Thank you for your comment. For four years I’ve been stuck in a job that I despise. At the beginning of lockdown I transitioned from a job I loved to the one I currently have. I’m terrified to leave though because I’m the only source of income in my home and I’m making good money. I am 55 and worked my whole life. This is the first time I’ve become the frog boiling to death. I talked to my family and they all told me not to EVER quit. They told me to get over myself and just suck it up. I cry every day. I’m nauseated every day. I’ve gained 30 pounds. I work 9 hours per day at a desk alone and talk to almost nobody, and I commute 2 hours per day putting over 100 miles on my car every day. My boss is a toxic lying manipulative *sshole. I come home and go straight to bed every day. Most nights I don’t even eat dinner. I’ve been looking for a new job for 8 months but nothing yet. I don’t know how to support myself without an income so I’m afraid to leave. I have nobody to lean on to help me while I recuperate and find another job. I don’t know what to do. I’m stuck.

@@SDsearcher I am so sorry that you’ve been going through this for so long. Before my experience at that toxic company I always said “never quit a job without another one lined up”. But after seeing how soul draining my experience was at that company, I had to leave for my health and wellbeing, and I also saw how dead inside the other employees were so I knew I had to go. Quitting a job when you don’t have another one lined up is very risky, but staying at a toxic company could cost you your health, well-being and peace (which are all priceless). You need to pray about it intentionally and make a decision for yourself. Consult with other people whose advice you can trust (whose lives you also admire). @weird__fishes I'm happy to report that I resigned from my 20-year job working for the government. I'm slowly building an e-commerce business, and although exciting, I'm just relishing in the mind shift that takes place when you make such a big change and have all the time off and freedom! I almost don't know what to do with it. The biggest fear is losing the paycheck. You minimize that by having savings and a plan to start making some money (in my case via self-employment, humble beginnings, nothing grand). It's been about 2 months of owning myself. No one deciding my day for me. Choosing where to assign me for the day or week or month. Freedom is expensive! It cost me those nice, steady, bi-monthly paychecks. But it is worth every dollar and more. I'm a free man! The plan is to sell products online. Try other ways to make money. If they nothing works out, I go back to my old job (where I was considered a great worker and left on good terms). I would go back with a new appreciation and humility, knowing that it I gave it a try. But that won't happen before 2 or 3 years of giving it a shot at a different way of making money than the 9 to 5. Thank you for reminding me about giving the update.

Very good thorough video. I left a job a few months back due to burnout. I was there for almost 5 years. I didn't have another one lined up, but I was in a decent financial position to do so. It all started when I brought up a few issues to upper management about a year before I left and despite doing everything in my power to resolve the problem, the problem kept getting larger and larger and it could have been resolved with the help of upper management, but they didn't do anything. I finally came to my breaking point, depression hit very hard, and resigned. That night I started to get phone calls and texts from co-workers who were in absolute shock and disbelief that I left since I was a stellar employee. What's so garbage about America and employers is that gap in your resume that you mention. Everyone gets burned out at some point especially if what you're doing is so monotonous and boring so it shouldn't "be used against you." Everyone quits something at some point. Another thing is you need some time to recuperate from the burnout. It's probably not the smartest thing health wise to jump straight into another job right away. The problem with the US is we are a constant "go go go" country. I mean hell an Amazon worker in Las Vegas committed suicide not too long ago. We have the least vacation days and maternity leave of most countries, etc. I really wish the US would take a page or two from the Nordic Countries and their work/economy. Here's my thoughts on what employers can do. You have to recognize employees often and have a good workplace culture. If you claim things like "we believe in the health and well being of our employees", it's more than just vacation days and healthcare. Workplace stress is normal, but at no point should it become so overwhelming that the employee has a breaking point like I did. Listen to your front line employees and help in any ways you can. Realize you work with human beings. As Simon Sinek says leadership is not about being in charge, but taking care of those in your charge. In my opinion health and well being > money.

@@aaronpcjb Just got a notification on my phone and was near a computer so I can respond to you quick! I talked to an old co-worker that I knew that had been working for a company for a few years. We used to work together at a company before the one I mentioned in my post so we knew each other quite well. He said they had a few open positions and that I should apply. Well the rest is history. I started out at a real basic position. The company quickly realized my value (remember my last post about being a stellar employee) and I'm now a manager over a team of about 10 employees. The pay is about 50% better plus I get three days off in the week instead of the normal two which is a game changer! If your current job is making your mental health go down the drain, start looking! Best of luck to everyone! Hang in there!

I’ll never have another job, I’ll never punch a clock, dread Monday, say TGIF, OR HUMP DAY. I don’t know what day it is. There’s no Sunday Funday. Who wants a job? Lost people want a job. I work all day every day...doing what I want. I build furniture, I write, play music, I’m a tattooist, and a number of other things. I’m going to die and so while I’m here, I’m going to do what I want. I’m going to turn my rental car in when the time comes and it won’t be rented out to anybody ever again. I love helping people walk away from their baggage. I love it when they panic over money and they call, telling me they made a mistake. They have to go through that. It’s not easy to walk away. It’s not quitting, it’s starting again. I love it when I see people grind out their passions and they come out the other side confident and happy.

I so, so needed this. I'm a Canadian living currently in Germany and the social welfare benefits in either country don't compare to Denmark, and both countries are way more neoliberal than Denmark. In Germany for instance, if you quit a job, you're not eligible for unemployment benefits for three months, whereas if you get fired, you're eligible right away. It's even worse regarding this in Canada. The last 3(!) jobs I've had in Germany have been absolute garbage for one reason or another, but the current one I have at the moment is definitely driving me closer and closer to quit prematurely. My boss is inexperienced and a total micromanager who I can never make happy. It's starting to affect my mental and physical health for sure. I came into this job with so much motivation and the energy to be successful. She drained it all from me in a matter of two months. For me right now, it's not a matter of whether I have a future there or not, but rather when I'll leave. I am pretty sure I am almost all the way there. I somehow just have to make sure they fire me so I can get my benefits sooner (which I paid for each month for years through paid work!). When you are having trouble sleeping, your stomach constantly aches or you're having bad dreams because of work, it's time to go.

The sick toxic place I work for almost a year is the worst job I ever had because whenever we have a meeting it's always right before our lunch time as if management don't want to lose production. During these meetings we are told we are family which is fake because the company can't seem to keep staff everyone quits a revolving door of newly hired and those calling out sick every week and then quitting. Because of the understaffing the family idea no longer applied because you are left to do the work of two or three people no manager would ever offer to help with the work load they just sit on their ass in the office or walk by watching you struggle to keep up. Long time staff are passive aggressive and territorial no chance of growth no training or development just oppression no communication under payment I could go on and on.

I just knew i couldn't do this any more as much as i loved or used to love it. I still think back on how i loved it or the people i met but I know i can't put the same performance as i could. Given what's happening and i was learning nothing new. I get told from my parents about going back or i had it good. They don't understand fully why i left. 1 of my co workers tried to convince me to stay, and i knew my decision was the right one. I don't and will never regret it as i felt empowered to quit with my previous jobs because i was incompetent, job load was ridiculous or drama. Just know that 2 hours a day being stuck with drama, ridiculous workload or being incompetent is still a long time. Imagine repeating that 5 days a week. Yup you got to find a new job.

I also had a nice side hustle helping an old guy with chores just down the road from me. Parents are there to help me to and the poor tax payers. Huge help. So things have been better Hoping to make a stable income to earn in case something happens to my parents or the 83 year old guy I'm helping. I'm trying to ease my way back in the workforce or even better. Going to college or a course for better jobs. Also, thanks for spreading awareness to everyone on this topic. What’s sad is that my current job is at a psychiatric clinic 😹😅 you would think they would prioritize their employees but most of them are such narcissists

Thank you for giving your advice - explaining and realizing how some people feel so stuck having to work in such bad endless situations with having no support nor understanding of how toxic somebody truly is by not showing appreciation for all you do and keep treating you as yesterday's trash and not like a person that works hard to please. It's not fun. I realize within time I will be able to leave, quit & never look back! (Freed from working with non-workable people & hurtful agencies that doesn't care about their employees.

I been getting write ups for calling off a lot and it doesnt worry me at all. I respect my job and like helping others, but it's not for me. Most of us hate it. I sure need to move on...

I'm about to quit what I thought would be my dream job. Conflictive work environment that doesn't make me feel secure, people tell me to be very mindful of what I say because it may be used against me. I can not work and learn like this.

I guess I'm more stupid than the frog. It gets scarier to quit when you're old and don't have many working years left to play with and not enough to retire on. Being jobless at 25 is a different thing than being jobless at 55. I'm in a very niche field with few jobs. It is killing me though. Starting to wish it would hurry up.

Quitting is scary and there is definitely ageism in hiring. But having a job that's killing you is just not sustainable.
