Thank you for this video, I have the same runner, took the tire down and took a wire brush to it, then rust protection. Thank you Sir for this video.

Gonna rethink Toyota for next vehicle. My 15 year old sierra was awesome and I’m in rust belt! Ty!!!!

I have a 2018 4Runner used in Florida only, and no off-road driving.: Spare tire started rusting after 1 year. Refinished. I go around the entire vehicle periodically and hit anything starting to rust with rust oleum "rust reformer". (A decent product) I have a 1999 also which is mostly rusted out beyond repair, but it was up north for 9 years. Not going to let it happen again.

I have a 2004 4Runner Sport 4.7 V8, and I can't find any rust anywhere. My wheels (including the spare) are aluminum. I live in Colorado. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Wow, and I thought it was only a 3rd gen 4Runner issue. Toyota does everything well expect for their frames.

Hopefully..rust is the death of a vehicle.

4th and I think 5th gen. AC drain hose is on the passenger side but terminates short, about 2/3 way down the engine bay. In rust belt, that hose will drip water down onto the frame and rust it out quicker. Extend the hose down to below the frame when you can.

Good tip! That is condensate water I think which will be acidic and very corrosive.
@alale9233 жыл бұрын
Your correct. I discovered that this drip contributed to my floor rotting out on my passenger side right above the frame rail.

Undercoated mine right when I got it!
@Doomzdayxx2 жыл бұрын
As far as the frame, they rust from the inside out. So undercoating does dick. You'd have to strategically spray fluid film or something inside the frame

Does the factory warranty cover “rust”?

Don't forget stainless for the screws underneath on the plates or you'll never get them off,

Thank you for your video. Questions: where can you get those stainless steel screws for the taillights that are compatible with the screws on the vehicle? Thank you
@ftwbeard17302 жыл бұрын
I got those at advanced auto..they have an entire section of stainless steel hardware.

Good attempt to protect from further rusting. Which year is the 4runner?

My 1996 4RUNNER same problem had to replace rear bumper rusted from inside out I thought Toyota galvanize their trucks my passenger side rear frame has a small crack sprayed lubricate under neither trying to slow rust lol.

I think they've gotten better but still have a long ways to go. I keep an eye on the underside now and touch up the undercoating whenever needed.

Wondering if all those screws were same size to buy a pack or were they different sizes ?
@ftwbeard17302 жыл бұрын
I took them out and roughly matched them up at an auto store. Stainless is expensive so they are usually sold in 2 or 4.
@g.fortin32282 жыл бұрын
@@ftwbeard1730 I will put that on my running list... I am making a list and posting it on my tool chest of all the little things I want to do after this winter. Thanks for the heads up on this stuff !

I'm late to this vid, I see a Virginia plate so they are considered as a rust belt state, gets salted roads I believe. 10yr old car at time of this video so untreated will def show rust, not surprising after such a lengthy period. Those living in rust belt know that yearly undercoating preventative maintenance is way to go. Got nothing to do with design flaw.
@AG4runner2 жыл бұрын
What did you use for undercoating
@ftwbeard17302 жыл бұрын
I hit any surface rust with a wire brush and then go over the bare metal with rustolium.

Hope you didn't use rubberized undercoating? That stuff causes the rust to accelerate.
@michaeldbhawker35563 жыл бұрын
Yup. Never undercoat rust. There are dedicated products for rust mitigation.
@katiejon172 жыл бұрын
@@michaeldbhawker3556 what about the oil type of undercoating? All of my mechanics say they hate working on them (greasy) but admit they help slow rust.
@jayhockley88412 жыл бұрын
@@katiejon17 Crown undercoating seems to help . The main thing I do living in the rust belt is wash off the underside a lot ( at least once a week ) in the winter with a car wash wand . And with the motor running I also raise the hood and rinse off the inner fenders , radiator , brake lines and under the hood .

Every Toyota has terrible issue with rust. Toyota needs to use better steel, or stainless steel altogether.
@Starman-yt8lj3 жыл бұрын
That’s simply not true.

Depends where you live. I have a tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner, between 5 and 12 yrs old. None have rust issues. We don’t salt our roads here and summers are usually bone dry.
