I would think the reverse….if heat rises and you have a ceiling fan; aren’t you just blowing hot air down on you in the summer? Shouldn’t you be taking the cooler air that’s below and drawing it up into the air. Then in the winter time, wouldn’t you want the hot air that’s above the fan to be pulled down to warm you. I can see if the fan was sitting in a window or like a floor fan but this concept just seems off for a ceiling fan.

Every room in my house in Virginia has ceiling fans and I've lived in it since August 2002 and never knew which way those blades should be turning. This has been on my mind recently because winter is almost here. Tomorrow, I plan to turn off all the fanbs and make sure they're Up or Right. Thanks so much Jay.

And if you're still in the comments section......Hey Jay!!! Those things are handy in Florida as well as Hawaii! I see why the ceiling fans move to distribute the higher hot air, but what's the theory for air distribution the other way? Cool air I guess stays closest to the floors then. Hmmm. Hope you, your wife and your beautiful son are doing GREAT. It's such a pleasure to see a new video of yours come out as they make my day. Love to you all!

Haha I like what you did there :D Hey Patrick!! Good to see you here! Here is the idea behind the summer operation.. In the summer, when the air is blowing over you, that air is actually absorbing some of the heat from the skin. Heat travels hot to cold. So as long as the room air temperature is colder than your body temperature, there will be somewhat of a cooling effect. We all are doing GREAT! Thank you for the well wishes! Our Honda Accord broke down today, with some bad timing on it's part.. It was exciting in a not so pleasant way but I did learn some things from this so next weeks video will be switched to a video about this instead. Hope you and family are doing GREAT (this reminds me of that frosted corn flakes tiger) as well, God bless!!

I would argue that just the opposite is true! Warm air rises so the hottest air is always going to be at the ceiling. Now do you want to blow that hotter-than-room-air DOWN on you during the hottest months? But in the winter, you DO want to blow the hotter air down. But.... if you have thermometer readings showing differently, I would always give way to them.

Regardless of direction of airflow, the ceiling fan will still be forcing convection. Technically doing the opposite would work, but downdraft mode will create a slightly higher wind chill effect

Save power by turning off the fan when you leave the room - if no one is getting air blown around their skin then there's not many reasons for it to be left on. It's an important habit to get into because many house fires are caused by *unchecked* fans left on accidentally (kids always do it!!!) or by someone ill-informed trying to "keep the house cool" while they are out. A fan motor will often let you know when it's about to die because they sound noisy or strange. The fan speed controller can burn out too, making it run too slow or not at all!

Jay!! Great explanation on the winter mode! I’m never bothered to think through the physics of it and your explanation makes perfect sense. Thank you! After you mentioned that you don’t see ceiling fans in Minnesota, I thought about it and you’re right! Very popular in San Diego having lived there. I too love ceiling fans and just out of habit, installed ceiling fans in our house here almost instinctively. But you’re right - nearly non existent in Minnesota for some odd reason. Hey on the energy efficiency aspect, I agree with you. One caveat / question would be does the “draft” that the fan creates as a result in it circulating the air negate any cost savings as maybe the indoor temperature would then have to be set higher in the winter? Likely a question that will not be answered. Look forward to hear how you guys are doing in Hawaii and how the push up challenge is going! You left MN at just the right time. As you probably heard, 6-8 inches of snow fell last week!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 жыл бұрын
Holt!! Good to hear from you man :) So you appreciate ceiling fans as well! I only gained this appreciation here in Hawaii.. I was living under a rock in Minnesota. About the winter efficiency. I actually read a few ceiling fan articles (including some nerdy ones) before making this video so that I don't accidently say something ignorant lol. Wherever they mentioned winter time, they all preached that the furnace will have to run less often. I do understand what you are saying though... From what I understood, since the air by the ceiling is hotter, the draft would be warmer and would not feel chilly. (but as it keeps running, it will use up all that hot air right?) I have never used a ceiling fan in the winter (Minnesota type of winter) so I honestly have no idea what the right answer is. I'm sure setting the fan speed to low will reduce the draft effect and if it's a high ceiling, it would reduce it even more. The next video I make will be a Hawaii update! :) More on that there.. Still going strong with the push-ups! Were you enticed into joining the party? I tried increasing it to 200 a day but decided that was too many push-ups so I went back down to 100 but increased the reps to 50 2x. And yeah! Wow. Minnesota is setting records!! We did leave on time. But I'm sure that at the same time it's really beautiful there too! Thanks for watching and commenting Holt! No need to reply to this unless you feel compelled to do so :)

I don’t think I believe you. The fan is going to circulate a certain amount of air no matter what direction. So in the winter time once it blows the hotter off of the ceiling after about two minutes all of the air is going to be approximately the same temperature. So the difference is the draft straight on you as opposed to be in on the walls of the room. A floor fan that is set on oscillate so it blows on me sometimes and somebody else sometimes it’s always cooler when it’s on me directly on me.
@WordofAdviceTV
