I find the music an attempt to infuse mystery and emotion into a text that doesn’t need it. It will also be the first thing to make the otherwise fantastic documentary feel dated. I am a musician and composer, and I appreciate the skill of the composition itself, but in this case I find it incredibly distracting.

I would add, though, that if the music helps the information reach and move more people, it’s okay if a few of us are put off by it.

I'm an alcoholic doing the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous Recovery Program. And knowing the Confessions of St Augustine, I can say that St Augustine laid the foundation of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Thank you Bishop Barron.
@cjnc11012 ай бұрын
12-steps did not come from the Church. St. Augustine would not support it. Dr. Bob Smith and Bill Wilson (founders) admit that much of their philosophy came from the Oxford Group Movement, which was censured by the Church because it promoted religious indifferentism. Bill Wilson participated in occult practices and later took LSD (which he saw no contradiction in AA) because he sought spiritual experiences (Step 11). He sought lessons from Fulton Sheen to convert to Catholicism, but stopped because Catholicism is incompatible with AA. This info was shared by a Priest.

Dear Bishop. Thank you for this masterful treatise on Augustine . I feel as if Augustine had been part of my life all of my 81 years. I was taught by the Augustinians in high school and college. More recently I taught at Seton Hall University where the Confessions was required reading for all students. I’ve even visited the site of St. Monica’s home in Ostia Antiqua. Again thank you for this and all of your work.

I have had so many people, even a minister at my church, to have been raised Catholic; yet, not understand their need for Jesus, our Savior. Thank God, I had good priests and religion teachers that taught me that I am saved through grace by faith in Jesus. You so eloquently explain this in this and your other videos, and I just want to thank you. You are giving so many Christians, whether Catholic or Protestants, and unbelievers the true hope of the Gospel-Jesus is Lord and Savior, and He came to earth to pay our penalty for our sins. May God bless you and your ministry as you continue to proclaim the Truth that is Christ!

Great video. Makes me want to read the Confessions and City of God. At around 33:00, in the comments about the City of God about how having a phony idol (phony gods) could lead to bad behavior in society. I remember St. Augustine made a similar comment in the Confessions, which is so true in contemporary culture. Today the gods may come from Hollywood rather than Greek/Roman gods. If the Hollywood gods are phony, the morals and behavior of society will be phony. What you worship and value the most determine your behavior. Just like in reinforcement learning and consistent with Matthew 6:21.
