Words Their Way in the Classroom

Teaching word study to students in the classroom is important to building good writers and readers. In this video you will see how I organize my Words Their Way study and how student choice comes into play. These tips will give teachers the flexibility to manage small groups, individual conferences and reinforce skills while students are independently working on activities OR make this a center option! I also discuss how I differentiate word study and how you can apply differentiation to your classroom. This is a resource for all elementary classrooms!

I’m looking into how to use words their way in a homeschool... a lot of how you use it in a classroom I can’t understand s I’m not a Montessori teacher. How do you exactly work on those words. Do you have it set up by days like mondays are rainbow writing etc?

Would love to see how you do word study for Kinder and 1st. How do you hold Kinder students accountable for word study?

Jeffrey, I use word study for my kindergarten students and I do it at the beginning of a guided reading lesson in small groups. For example I will have a group of 5 students with me at my guided reading table and we do a quick word study lesson right there before we write or read. After the small group lesson I give them a similar word study activity to work on their own.

Hi, thanks for the great information in the video. I have a question about activities, though. I teach 1st grade and many of the sorts my students end up with are picture sorts. What are some activities you might have them do when they are sorting pictures of words they wouldn't be expected to spell? The emphasis on these sorts is hearing the pattern in the sounds. At the time, I did use Words Their Way assessment. Over the past two years, I have moved away from Words Their Way and developed my own method call Bridging Literacy.
