My grandfather was an old Dutch guy that was a VP at 7/11. He actually introduced some really cool convenience store innovations that have spread to all stores across North America. But the one thing you could not do with him is phone on a Sunday. He'd pick up and in a neutral tone answer the question. Then he'd tell the person who phoned him that if they ever called him again on his Sunday with his family it would be the last company phone call they would ever make. I respected that, though it should have included Saturdays too.

I’m a VP at a large bank and I refuse to have my work email on my phone or iPad. Not popular, but I expect a work life separation.

This exactly. I'm an engineering technician, but also the office "IT" guy (I used to be a computer programmer.) I'll start this by saying we can see each other's calendars so we know when others have meetings, appointments, vacation, etc. On more than one occasion I've been on vacation, actually hunting in the woods, and my phone has rung or I've had "beep" messages from Discord go off. I ended up uninstalling Discord from my phone and let the office know that unless the server has gone down (which it hadn't in these situations) I am not to be contacted outside of the office.

I once had a job at an insurer and I had a VP tell me that it is very important to "be in the room that you are in" . This meant that when you were at work - be at work! When you are at home - be at home! Wise words from someone who I dod nopt really like.

Work Life Balance is definitely more difficult now than ever, especially when you work from home. Having an in-home office that you look at every day makes it really hard to separate "work you" from "life you".

I work as a Sports Information Director and there aren't many "off-hours" but the ones there are it is crucial to shut-off anything work related because the job and the hours it entails can easily burn you out if you don't give yourself time

As someone who works in the Oil Field. Im pretty grateful I work a 8 Days on, 6 Days off shift. A week working flies by, but so does my week off. But my company does honour that system, my boss only calls or texts me IF there is an actual emergency. So I do at least get a decent break away

Preach it, Shannon. I’m in my 17th year as a school teacher in the US. I spent my own money for my job, worked 70 hour weeks for years. Felt tired and ached constantly at the end of last school year. Thought I was burned out. Turns out I have stage 3 renal cancer. Facing my own mortality, I don’t consider it time well spent.

Work to live. Not live to work. I work from home, and once 4:30pm hits, I make sure to shut down the work laptop until the next morning. Definitely have to have boundaries for yourself. Part of my team is in the Philippines so they're about 12-13 hours ahead of us. Was very clear with them I do not respond to messages outside of my work hours.

In the U.S., "tabling" a bill in Congress means to postpone consideration of it. I recently learned that it has the opposite meaning in the UK (to submit a bill for consideration). It seemed that Shannon used it with the British meaning. Is that how it's defined in Canada?
@MrBlazemaster5252 ай бұрын
Considering Canadian Parliament is modeled on the British Parliament it's likely they use the British meaning

And with the work is a family thing, both my last jobs have been like that, my current one is bs, my last one that I was at for almost 15 years, a fast food donut shop, my 22 year old coworker died along with his 19 year old girlfriend in a fiery car accident, the store closed for 2 hours when the news got to them, and stayed open during his funeral, letting workers who wanted to go attend. I had been out with a sickness at that point for a couple of weeks, the manager text me saying that they needed me back, I told her I wasn't coming back, I was done. Unfortunately leaving them with no baker as I was the full time, and the guy who died was the only alternate

Ontario passed the right to disconnect law in 2021, nothing nationwide though.
@TheManny7172 ай бұрын
In California, the gov just signed a bill not too long ago and is now law where supervisors and higher-ups do not have the right to call us during our downtime/vacation. That’s kinda impossible, considering that I work as a train operator and that very rarely do they call me, but on Wednesday, one supervisor called me and told me that I was qualified for what we called a startup: meaning that I would work on my regular schedule on one evening, and the following day, I would be training…for the next four years.

I know some people at my work that have emails on their phones to always be updated, and I've seen emails being sent at very odd times, such as 12am or 6am. Or work being done when company hours are closed. I don't get this habit, I think that's really unhealthy to do.

ive always lived to my work clock, once it hits the end of the shift im out of there, and on vacation i uninstall all my work related apps on my phone. You pay me to work X hours, outside of that i dont care what's happening at my workplace

The best decision I ever made in my life was to switch to contracting after 20 years in permanent employment. Paid twice as much and didn't have to deal with all the HR/Management BS. If they needed me to do anything extra it was very much 'Show Me The Money'. Allowed me to retire about 5 years early as well.

Retail work is one of the worst in terms of work-life balance. I remember a long-ago retail job where I asked my manager if I could have Tuesday mornings off so I could keep up with my music lessons. She said she'd see what she could do. When the next week's schedule was posted, I was scheduled for -- you guessed it -- Tuesday morning. It's like they're outraged at the idea that you might want a life outside of work and so you must be crushed into absolute compliance. Thank goodness I now work for a company that is very accommodating of our personal obligations.
@Vienna1072 ай бұрын
I've worked in retail most of my life and this can be true. My experience was a little different. Being dependable allowed me to be able to choose days off that i wanted, but the trick is i think is to be dependable, but not to be an expert at everything. The more you know how to do, the more they will just expect of you. Ended up doing a manager's workload without being management at all. It's a shame that most companies will exploit you more the more you know how to do at a job. So I would work hard enough to be a key part of the store, but didn't show any interest in learning more skills than I felt I wanted to.

On the point of the congressman running for the 14th time, I don't consider elected officials to be "workers" but that's me. Work creates goods, whereas politics creates bads.
@y6cd3sdzHs1g2 ай бұрын
To explain the "bads", career politicians are mostly psychopaths and narcissists: those traits are incredibly helpful in politics, and elected office appeals to their natures.
