thank you for doing things yourself, there are just too many car girls out there that just "team up" with companies because their channel is growing and in the end they have done maybe 5 - 10% of the work on their own project car but the charm of "i built it by myself" is gone. just had to put that out there ;)

Just a tip for chassis rust prevention we use here along the coast in South Africa is boiled linseed oil. Just put it in a paraffin gun and spray in and on the chassis. In 2 weeks time it has hardened enough to be barrier to stop further rust and is abrasion resistant too. It's a cheaper alternative than a lot of branded products and works better than most. Love the Series vids so far😁😁😁

Nice one Sophie! I did mine in Corroless Primer and Paint. I found a few things from experience - 1. Warm it up as its thick stuff if you are brushing it. 2. Buy a couple of aerosol cans each of the paint/primer too as it helps in getting the paint in to the hard to reach areas. They also leave a lovely paint finish. 3. Two coats of primer/paint works great. 4. Dont use it over rust convertor - it wont bond and you'll end up scraping it all off and starting again. Doh! How are you getting on with the mid-crossmember replacement? I need to do mine too soon. Looking forward to seeing some more on this so I can get some tips from you! Thanks!

Honestly, I love how "OCD" you are about this stuff. At first I was worried you're spending too much time on trivial things but I now realise that you just spend a lot of time on EVERYTHING! I genuinely doubt that there's a Landy owner anywhere in the country that puts as much time and effort into maintaining their vehicles. On a possibly controversial note, I hope you'll like the Series 3 for what it actually is. If you specifically WANT a S3 that's great but I hope you won't be disappointed in the vehicle you end-up with after all the effort. Personally, I'd leave it up to other people to restore old LR's, so I can admire them from a distance, and put all my effort (and money) into building a more modern vehicle that I can drive every day. That's just me, though. If you really want an old Landy, I suspect your S3 is going to be about as good as it can get. *EDIT* By way of advice, if you don't already know about them, google "easy out sockets" and then get yourself a decent quality set. They really are a game-changer when it comes to removing rusty bolts. No mechanic should be without them.

Thank you! Yes I’m very pedantic with my Land Rovers. I’m sure they will most likely live longer than me haha. Before I accidentally acquired my Series III - I was flirting with the idea of owning a blue, petrol, 88’’ S3. Then a few days after looking, a family friend reached out with a mysterious Land Rover parked in a hedge. Of course, the exact specification of Series I wanted. I knew from the moment I went to view that this LR had to come home. From the brief moments I have driven my little series, I absolutely adore it. He’s part of the family now and I honestly will never part with him (or any of my Land Rovers for that matter - I’m very sentimental). So to answer your comment, I have been besotted with my Series affectionally named Gerald since I saw him.

Salting roads is just dumb. the ones making these decisions in government aren't the ones dealing with these types of consequences. fyi I used to only use anti-sieze on stainless and aluminum but now use it on "everything that will someday have to come apart again".

Crackin Job Grommit ! . I admire all the work you are doing. In all the years of MilitaryWW2 resto's I dont think we ever had anything sandblasted, We used wire brushes, scrappers and elbow grease. mainly to keep the cost down. a tip for rusty bolts and fasteners, soak them in penetrating oil overnight prior to work and then (and this sounds counter intuitive) TIGHTEN them a tiny bit. it breaks the rust formed between the threads. sounds odd but trust me it works. once they move wind them out a thread or two and then soak the threads in oil and do them up, this gets the oil into the threads. Keep It Up, can't wait for the next one.

A trick I learned years ago that might help with rusty bolts: attack the head/visible thread with a wire brush best you can, then soak them for as long as possible with a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF fluid. Makes a REALLY good penetrating fluid.

Found your channel quite recently, I must say I'm very impressed with the quality of the work you do. And for rust protection under the car and inside the frames and panels I'd say you should try Fluid Film. It sticks to different surfaces very well, and it's thin enough that you can get it in tight spaces, but it does not make a film so thick and hard that water can get on the inside like it does on more tar like products...

Love your work Sophie! I always thought that my Yorkshire dad had ATD (Attention To Detail) syndrome when working on his cars & bikes with my mum, but seeing you do it just reiterates that it's an excellent trait to have. Dad always said to me that if you spend the time, you'll be well rewarded. I remembered the salted roads on my visits to the UK & I've seen the damage it does to the underbody of cars. We're lucky in Australia we don't have that but we do get salty mud which when dry forms a fine powder on body work. I've seen a lot of 4x4's & AWD vehicles come through my mates workshop with it on & when it rusts, it eats it away horribly. I keep telling owners to clean their vehicles thoroughly but they never listen. Then they wonder why they come back with their vehicles full of rust. Even though you're on a budget & working within your means, you're doing a bloody good job. Whoever has taught you, you better be buying/making them bacon butties for the rest of their life. You've been taught better than the majority of panel beaters that I know of. I hope at the end of your Land Rover builds that you look into having a Couplertec anti corrosion system put into them. I've installed hundreds & they really do work. We installed one on a 1982 Ford XE Ghia ESP 22 years ago and within it's life, it's only scored one tiny bubble of rust. I have it on my Holden VY ute and my Suzuki Grand Vitara. Google it when you have time. Might be a good idea to find an outlet in your industrial area that sells bolts, screws etc & replace those with stainless steel ones so that over time they are easy to remove. There's nothing more that I hate than stubborn bolts that are fused & you have to bring out the big toys to get them off. Sophie, I'm saying this in the most flattering way, but I wish I was a few years younger. I'd be chasing after you. Women like yourself taking jobs like these on & doing it in a professional way is extremely rare. I'm lucky that both my parents loved working on their motorbikes & cars and that they taught me their passion. Keep it up Sophie, you'll go very far :)

@@LandRoverSophie It's more like thanks for showing us what you have learned & putting it to practice. Update on that Holden VE SV6 ute we're doing for the paraplegic girl. All the bodywork is finished. The only things left to do is the ride height, wheels, hydraulics for the hardlid operation & replacing the lights. I spoke to an automotive mechanical engineer regarding the passenger seat & modifying it to store the wheelchair. Unfortunately it got knocked back due to the fact that there's an airbag in the seat & can't be taken out. All vehicles with airbags must still have them if the vehicle is being re-engineered. I'm going to have to make a wheelchair from scratch that will be easy to store in the passenger seat. Time to get the crayons out!

I'm unsure exactly which clip you are talking about - but you may be correct in that sometimes I try to tighten bolts that won't budge as well as loosen them. It's a technique of working them back and forth that sometimes frees them up, it sometimes works - thank you!

@@LandRoverSophie There are many ways to loosen stubborn bolts and nuts. I usually spray them wd40 the day before I'm going to work on them. I usually like to use an impact wrench on a low setting going forward and reverse to try and knock the rust loose than use a breaker bar to actually break them loose. If that doesn't work I use heat like you did to finally get the job done. Your doing an awesome job.

good videos Sophie. i just thought id recommend a 90% air die grinder and a roloc adaptor or a roloc sander kit, you can get loads of different roloc discs from really course sandpaper to scotch brite ones and bristle ones. I was sure machine mart had a kit but i checked their website and could not see it on their but maybe not everything from the catalogue is up there. When you want to use heat to help try and free up a nut or bolt it works best to apply the heat to the bolt or nut itself rather than the surrounding area, as the the bolt is much smaller (not as much steel) than the metal part it screws into so it will heat up faster, take less gas and take less time. them dimples as you put it in the surface of them parts are from the manufacturing process, normal finish cast parts (cast iron, cast aluminium etc). im not a 100% up on how it works but i think from memory it works by heating the metal up so its in a liquid state then pouring it in to a two part mould, moulds are normally made from compressed sand, sand compressed in a die to form one part/side of the mould (the other side would be made the same way but with a different die). two parts of the mould are placed together and the liquid metal is poured into the mould threw holes in the top. once its cooled the mould is then broken up to remove the part (one time use moulds) the parts then cleaned and gets a coat of paint or is finished how ever. the sand gives you a poor surface finish when compared to machined parts but they are cheaper to make. another way to tell is if you look at the bracket at 16.53 in the video, the edge under the scrapper has a ridge going all the way it from where the two halves of the mould meet. if you just use the wire wheel to remove the old paint thats left behind after using the needle scaler then a surface prep disc (also called poly strip wheels) might be faster and its also better for the metal as it wont remove as much as a wire wheel or sanding disc/flap wheel but it will still give a good surface finish. you can get these for angle grinders, drills and they even do them for the roloc system to go into a die grinder. i think they do 115mm and 125mm for angle grinders and they do 50mm and 75mm for the roloc system which i use a lot on smaller parts or areas that are tight when looking at compressors be careful not to confuse free are delivery with the air displacement figure which are normally both stated in CFM. if you have a 18 CFM displacement id say your more likely to be looking at a 13 CFM free air delivery. We are very limited to the size of compressor we can use a on domestic electric supply though which is really a shame
