Neutral grip bench has strengthened my wrists. Stabilizing the neutral grip bar at first took a lot of attention and effort.

Hi Mark, Thanks for your excellent videos!!! Recently, I started doing barbell workouts again, after a really long pause, and the reason is that I have read a convincing book from a medical doctor who is also a personal trainer. He stated in the book that endurance training does not stop the process of losing muscle as we are getting older, in fact, it makes the process even faster. He believes that traditional powerlifting programs that focus on the 4 large, compound movements (shoulder press, bench press, deadlift and squats) are the best tools to fight ageing because they slow down the process of losing muscle and help preserve range of motion. I have some fairly heavy kettlebells, but even they are nowhere near as heavy as the barbells I use for training, and I wonder if KB-s are more suited for endurance training than strength training. On the other hand, barbell training in itself does not have all the benefits of bodyweight + KB training, so... Do you agree with the book? Any suggestion for older trainees? Should we stop using kettlebells, or just mix them with barbells?

That's interesting. I'd like to see the evidence that endurance training causes muscle loss. My understanding is that the difference between low vs high reps is strength and power, not muscle building. I think the amount of muscle building depends on whether you work to failure as the small tears and subsequent regrowth are what determine the amount of hypertrophy.

@@tsquared334 I am not a medical doctor and have no qualifications in any relevant fields, so this is just my opinion below. I believe there are two reasons why older trainees may not benefit from most endurance sports: - The first one is recovery: we have a limited capacity to recover from our training, so we need to be very careful how we use this reduced capacity. Endurance training, especially as it is done by many people these days (e.g. ultramarathons, etc.) is quite demanding, so is not ideal for older people. - The second one is something you can simply observe yourself: compare the physique of an endurance athlete like a cyclist or runner to let's say a sprinter. Endurance athletes, even young ones, are always very skinny because they have almost no fat at all and very little muscle. This should not be too surprising: you do not benefit from large muscles when running, let's say 200 km; you benefit from having the least amount of muscle that can carry you. I do realize that kettlebell training is somewhere between endurance and strength training, at least the hard-style one. However, competition-style KB training seems much closer to endurance training like running than typical strength training like powerlifting.

Deadlifts and bent over rows would be interesting to try with that too. Squats might be a b!tch though LOL... I would be really careful with that cable attachment point though. Seems like a spot to cut the top of one's head getting in and out of the bench

The way that cable hook swings at your head every time you re-rack the bar… Keep a booboo kit handy.

Bench pressing is one of the few exercises that can kill you.. You should only do floor press or use safety bars when using a rack alone. These limit your range of motion but will save your life.

As long as you are not training to failure you are fine . You should always leave 1 to 2 reps short of failure..

How would this work for floor press? It would seem the arch would make it ideal.
@WeBreakItAllDownRightHere Жыл бұрын
I've tried it. Didn't feel too different because my elbows get stopped at the same place, where on a bench the arch lets them drop back further than normal
@Floyd-o7l Жыл бұрын
@@WeBreakItAllDownRightHereI suppose, then, for a floor press the main advantage would be a different hand position from a barbell.

I still don't see how you travel with kettlebells and clubs. They are heavy.. Bodyweight and bands would be about it, I would think.

Mark is his own company thus they are the cost of doing business, therefore he can write off shipping as a business expense.
@barnzss Жыл бұрын
Would really depend on how and where you travel, I currently keep a 6kg club in my car so I can do a 10 min single arm workout somewhere in the day if I am out and about. I also have an 8kg under my desk so I can do a 5min mobility workout every day I'm in the office.
@powskier Жыл бұрын
@@davidwagner9644 Not sure how that relates to anything. I was talking about traveling by plane which is what most do when they travel to Europe or South America, for example. But yeah, you can bring some stuff if traveling by car. I've brought a kettlebell with me before.
@davidwagner9644 Жыл бұрын
@@powskier I will break it down barney style (simplify for simpletons) for you. He works on movie sets thus his gear is shipped by the movie company. They charge him a fee, he writes the fee off as an expense. It is not like he is traveling as a businessman or sales man who just take a carry on. Think outside the box bro.

What happened here, I had the 🍿 ready but it all went quiet 😢 C'mon lads it's almost that time of the year 🌲 powskier made a good point, for most people it's not that convenient to travel with 'bells' powskier responded to the wrong dude who hadn't suggested car over air travel ( that was barnszz who I think was trying to cause troubke ) , which was beside the point in fairness. Wagner, who was making a seperate point on Mark's ability to write-off taxes and travel with 'bells' , had a go back. The initial point, that maybe it's not realistic for the average person to easily travel with 'bells' was lost. Finally, was Mark actually suggesting in clip that it is easy for people to air travel with 32kg + 10kg 'bells'. 😊
