Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Күн бұрын

Welcome back to another enthralling Workshop Catchup, or as I fondly call it... a "Workshop Ketchup". In this episode I will take you on an exclusive tour of the Workshop, spotlighting the latest updates with various work-in-progress classic car restorations.
Our journey begins with the iconic Jaguar E-type, a masterpiece of British engineering. Iain delves into the intricate details of its restoration progress. Next, we encounter a striking yellow Lamborghini Countach. Its notable for its unusual Ariston shock absorbers and Iain shares his unique perspective on this Italian marvel.
Continuing our tour, a vehicle that features in the background of many Tyrrell's Classic Workshop videos - a Lamborghini Tractor, showcasing the diverse engineering prowess of the Lamborghini brand. Iain enlightens us on the tractor's historical significance and the meticulous restoration process it is undergoing.
The highlight of this episode is the Ferrari F40. This automotive legend, now in the final stages of its rebuild, stands as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship at Tyrrell's Classic Workshop. While awaiting a few more parts for completion, Iain offers a sneak peek into the intricate work involved in bringing this iconic supercar back to its former glory.
Join me in this captivating episode as we explore these classic beauties, each with a story to tell. And remember, your likes, subscribes, and comments fuel my passion for bringing these timeless vehicles back to life. Stay tuned for more updates from Tyrrell's Classic Workshop!

There's a joke over here in Germany (hard as that may be to believe), that says the reason Jaguar made the E-Type so fast was so that the owner had a chance to enjoy the performance before it rusted away. As a Brit, I could say the same thing about the BMW 3.0 CSL! My friend who's on the classic scene over here, says there's 4.2 couoe that does the rounds that was originally purchased by the owner of a metal plating company. Story goes, he bought the car, drove it for a week, was convinced it was the greatest car ever made, but wasn't going to last longer than a year. So he had his people completely strip the car back to bare metal, whereupon he galvanised the entire bodyshell. Was then worried the weight of the treatment would blunt the performance, so had the engine breathed on. He then had his people rebuild it to a German standard. and enjoyed years of fault free motoring. My friend says the car has never been restored and is in remarkable shape.

I think I like the way MG did the sills on the B. The outer sill is more cosmetic than structural, much easier to replace when the inevitable rust comes along. I do enjoy your videos very much. Thank you Iain.

Fascinating about the Jaguar. I always thought that the design of the monocoque was reminiscent of WW2 fighter fuselages, especially the engine carrier bolted onto the front of the body. Beautiful car, and another great video, thanks!

The f40 is the JLo of the supercars, back then, and Even today. There is no car that exposes more power, Ambition and truth. The f40 delivers all the Emotion that is spread over many decades in many cars. It has a V8. It is loud, flat. Its fast. Its ferocious and unpredictable, its raw and Not sugarcoated, in the end it is so much more then i know is i Never drove one, Not Even saw one of These. And, in the end, it is red. A red car was since i remember having feelings for cars. Always fast, sexy and mostly Not affordable. Enzo, nonmatter What you created before, with the f40 you passed the legend of yourself into a mechanic Heart, the f40. Thank you Mr. Tyrell for sharing and educating us Nerds so well. Cheers from Germany.

I have an old Holder B10 tractor laying around in the shed in the field it was from my grandfather. Its a 2 stroke 500cc Sachs diesel with a manual slinger start in the front. I will restore it in the future. Its a rare thing. I believe its from the early 50s somewhere. These small tractors came just a few years after ww2

1971-72 De Tomaso Panteras used Italian Ariston shock absorbers (dampers), which appear to be license-built domestic Konis (Koni being a Dutch company). Internally they are identical to Konis with 100% parts interchangeability, and thus they can be rebuilt by any Koni rebuilder. Starting in 1973 De Tomaso switched to much cheaper, non-adjustable shocks made by Telecar. In period, Koni offered the early-style dampers under their own name, and De Tomaso offered them as an option on their post-Ford cars from the mid-1970s onward. One has to wonder how many owners of 1971-72 Panteras replaced their Ariston shocks with identical Konis, falsely believing they were making an upgrade? The original Ariston shocks on my wife’s Pantera have over 100,000 miles on them and are still going strong. Regular exercise benefits them. I can only imagine the need for 6000 UK pounds of shock refurbishment on this Countach stemmed from too many months or year of setting unused (or, it’s just been an exercise in recreational spending perhaps?).
@iain_tyrrell
@iain_tyrrell 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your interesting comments. To have original shocks rebuilt properly is not a cheap deal anymore, not matter what make they are. Quite often parts have to be specially made. Carry on enjoying your Pantera!

1:37 it's amazing what stacking can do for a car's structure. I was following a blog back in the day with a feller who was restoring his E-type and he had serious rust problems. Thus he had started to (essentially) disassemble the car's entire rear end bit by bit. I don't know if you're familiar with the term "knolling" but he had (inadvertently) done a knolling arrangement in order to keep up with all the components. It was an impressive sight (even as some of the parts were rusted out). A shame that blog is gone from the internet, it was quite a saga from the early days of the internet. Once one of these cars gets rusty, there's quite a bit of dedication (and part madness) for someone to bring it back into the living.

Iain it's amazing what a "flimsy" construct the Jaguar E type monocoque convertible body, in particular, was. A chap I knew years ago used to refer to them as "a string bag", i.e. what my old Mum used to use to carry home the groceries in the 1950's. Flexible but strong.

My Aston Martin DBS Series 1 had the sealed Armstrong front dampers. The replacements are Koni. I like the look of the Armstrong casing, so I refurbished them, adding a threaded collar so that they can be serviced. Loads of work, but worth it when my car will be the only one on the field with original Armstrong Blue dampers. I even reproed the foil decals! Love Iain for his attention to detail...

Just caught your latest Iain, that Lamborghini tractor has to a 4 cyl ? Got to be a 4. On the E Type, you are so correct on the cill plate under the doors having major structural support. If you look at a fox body mustang they have many angles in that area to stiffen the car, small damage to that metal and it’s a different 5.0 litre mustang. Many thanks Iain
