Also that tube in the back is called a sight glass it shows how much hydro fluid is in the trans you need it to be in the middle for full

That is another term for it indeed! I'll get the fluid level once the transaxle is complete. Thanks for your tip. Best regards

Transaxle means transmission and axle as a single unit!

It has been so long I forgot the name of that unit. Is it "Sunstrand" or something like that? Also, where do I get a manual or workshop manual on the unit. Mine is leaking right where you have already disconnected yours. I was hoping to see that part. Mine (one of mine) leaks right where the driveshaft input to the unit is. Where do we get seal kits or rebuild kits? Thank you once again for your outstanding KZbins and for saving great old tractors.

That is correct! The hydraulic pump/motor is made by Sundstrand and it's a Model 15 (U Pump). I believe there are many manuals up for sale on eBay which should cover these old tractors. There is a website I frequently use which is great for parts diagrams and other parts. Here to be seen: weingartz.com/illustrated-diagram/john-deere-parts-lookup/model-317-hydrostatic-tractor-17-hp-kt17qs-kohler-engine-pc1698-kt17qs095001-120000-1979-317-hydrostatic-tractor-17-hp-kt17qs-kohler-engine-pc1698-kt17qs120001-155000-1980-317-hydrostatic-tractor-17-hp-kt17qs-kohler-engine-pc1698-kt17qs155001-19000/4275-35686 I'm not sure who would supply the gasket in between the differential and hydraulic motor. I usually cut my own gaskets if they aren't too sophisticated. I will share another video about the Sundstrand pump and after that is complete I will assemble that onto the differential! Thank you for your kind words, I try my best:) Best regards

Thank you for making these videos, it's appreciated!! Now for a question...Is the small in line filter required for venting? The JD parts catalog just calls it a fuel filter for some reason, and other online sources call it a vent tube. My 317 does have a very tiny little hole near the top of the inline filter. From what I've read, they're supposed to be like that. I don't know if that's just to make filling the rear end easier? Or to purge any air for the system? Did you have any issues after not reusing the in line filter?

I'm happy I can share this type of content and I hope I will be able to create many more videos. Thank you, Taylor!! You are correct! Originally there is an inline filter that acts as a vent. This plastic vent has a tiny hole towards the top half and allows air to escape the rear end once you start pouring new oil into the rear end. I personally just popped off the hose towards the top end of the rear end while filling up new oil, as I won't have to change it for a long time. If one does not have the vent, you can add a little piece of tape on one side of the filler tube. Once this is in place, you can put your funnel on and you will see a little opening towards the side of the tape. This will allow air the escape as you pour oil into the rear end. From what I understand you have the vent and that is the correct part to have on the sight tube. Either way, I hope I could clarify this topic, and thank you for your great question! Best regards
