Monday was the hottest day on record following a record-breaking Sunday, according to preliminary data from Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's climate monitoring agency.
Professor of Energy and Climate Change at University College London Michael Grubb tells Andrew Marr that he's 'not surprised', adding that he believes Tuesday had also beaten Sunday's record.

We are talking about average global temperatures not what the weather is like in Guildford on any particular day. LBC, the BBC and ITV are not telling people the truth about global warming. You only have read what is happening in other parts of world to understand how climate change is already harming food production, human habitation and human health. And that does not include the damage being done to the natural world that underpins and sustains human civilisation in everything we want. We should all be terrified about climate change because if some human beings keep burning fossil fuels, the entire planet will be tipped into the abyss, into a nightmarish world of climate uncertainty where some people will find life just about bearable while others will be ruined and have to leave where they live to find safety. But not just a few thousands here and there, it will be millions of people seeking sanctuary. If anybody needs to go to jail it should be politicians, lobbyists and the fossil fuel industry who seem deaf, dumb and blind to their crimes.

Major infrastructure projects, to deal with a huge population, will gobble up more open space, and countryside...THIS WILL HAVE A TERRIBLE EFFECT ON OUR ECO SYSTEM, be in no doubt . Also a big move to insulate older homes. Scrap green tax’s and all that money go straight to new stronger infrastructure. Fossil fuels isn’t renewable so once it’s all gone what happens then.? Build under ground. Its cooler below ground. Its just a mater of time until outside work has to be done at night. With all this heat, Im thinking we need to worry about a super volcano erupting. I just dont understand this blame game everyone seems to want to play. How does blame help the situation? People need to build underground in order to save on energy. The earth is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter if your underground. It needs to be build on a hill away from flood prone areas. And a double perimeter wall needs to be built with a drainage system between the walls to drain water downhill away from the structure. This will reduce sweating and provide an air flow for ventilation. Two or more entranceways need to be provided to ensure acess in case one gets blocked and an central heating and air system can be in a cove area on the downhill side to produce heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. It wont be needed as much as being above ground, but in extreme weather events, its nice to have. I like the design of earthship houses. They provide a garden area in the front part of the house where you can grow food. The big plus of building under ground is lower need for electricity and less outside noise.

We are past that point. We depend on fossil fuels. Can't have "renewables" without fossil fuels. Continue using them, we die from the heat, wars etc. Stop using them, we starve. We can only reduce energy use and stop increasing our population, but will still face civilizational collapse. Sorry.

Why don't you just do something yourself? You know, plant a plum tree, make your own compost, collect all the rainwater coming off your roof and guide it to flat ground around your house where it can permeate, rather than sending it to drains to cause overflows on roads???? Is that too much work for you?

1) The world has always had natural temperature variation in the past 2) Climate change doesn't seem to significantly impact most people's day-to-day lives at the moment 3) Most people are currently struggling with worse issues than the weather 4) There are many different ways of measuring the earth's temperature 5) Trying to prevent climate change is probably already killing people e.g. by raising energy costs above affordable levels for some elder people I'm not a climate change denier. I simply want to explain why some people aren't particularly concerned yet

The profligate policies of the political leaders should reveal the actual truth. We are gaslit on the one hand that global warming is a disaster about to happen ... and yet the policy response, although punitive for the people, merely exacerbates all the concerns we are told by the elite need addressing. It just doesn't correspond. Harsh policies are not at all effective at addressing the problem, should the narrative be believed.

Go ask people in the Pacific, Greenland, Northern siberia, Iceland.. even here in Scotland. 3) some people yes, but I refer you to my answer for 2, for plenty of people it's their main issue. 4) yes, but it's almost universal now, whichever method you apply there is a dramatic rise in global mean temps. 5) are you being funny, or trying to be? Energy costs rising has nothing to do with climate change. That's geo and social economical politics. And how you can compare a global extinction phase to some elderly people's heating bills is beyond small minded 🤦‍♂️ Not trying to be a denier? Well then what's your point? You sound very much like a denier.

How is it that Florida was once under water mostly but now it's hotter than it was then? Maybe we just don't have measurements? Hasn't the Earth been getting cold then hot, hot then cold, for as long as science can judge? Is there any time in scientific time that the climate was not changing? What temperature are we trying to 'lock in' and who decided that that temperature was the right one? Can someone help me with these things?
@brentvanzanen6353
@brentvanzanen6353 2 ай бұрын
Because the cryosphere takes a long time to reach equilibrium and the temperature change is extremely rapid at planetary timescales. The ice age is about 2.58 million years old, It's been about that long since FL was underwater, and yes there's been a regular glacial/interglacial cycle, though it's important to understand the drivers of that cycle apply mostly to the ice age because of the albedo and carbon cycle effects of glacier advance and retreat, and also that until very recently there was a LOT more ice in the northern hemisphere. A temperature that retains a northern ice cap under insolation, at least until July is IMO the most critical benchmark, but we aren't going to manage that. These are pretty basic questions for somebody who seems to be trying to challenge a whole branch of science.

@@drummingtildeath I'm pointing out to you, a human being, that those answers are not given. You can choose to ignore that if you like but at least now you know that you are ignoring science. Tell me the answer if it's so easy. What temperature are we locking in globally and why? Otherwise all the 'lower the trajectory of the temperature through taxing people' doesn't make sense. Right now, it does not make sense. If you can tell me the temperature that we are trying to lock in globally, and why, maybe it might make sense. But you can't, because it doesn't make scientific sense. Say science all you want, it doesn't change anything.

What’s really interesting is that in the thirty years since the first climate crisis conferences global fossil fuel usage has doubled. Last year was a record year for oil extraction and coal extraction. We’ve also doubled our plastic production of which only 9 percent is recycled. Add to this almost 75 percent loss of insects and wildlife and the constant destruction of the remaining ancient forests and habitats. I think most people deep down know where this is heading. What a shame.
