oh nooo, not kramnik! a rather curious memory of him that i also value very much: he was the last human chess player to dare to fight against a machine. i closely followed his matches against fritz and boy did he try out some bold lines to crack the machine.

wasn‘t it Kasparov himself who said „others just push pieces, whereas Kramnik plays chess.“? Such a shame, his analysis and calculations of lots of lines will be dearly missed.
@davidblue819

Danny King, you can answer this. If, just before Kramnik took off, someone had said to a good working grandmaster, "a man is about to invent a defense to the Ruy Lopez so good that champions will have to think about whether they should play 1. e4 in win-or-die situations," wouldn't you have said, "I'm not sure that's possible"? Before Kramnik, the Ruy Lopez was the perfect opening to kill all Black's hopes but not White's. In world championship matches, Short and Karpov couldn't reliably defend the Ruy Lopez against Kasparov, nor could Korchnoi against Karpov, nor could Spassky against Fischer. Whoever defended 1. e4 e5 generally lost the big match, and defeats in the Ruy Lopez would have something to do with it. Meanwhile White would be comfortable and safe. Then Kramnik had his say, and the one-sidedness of "the Spanish torture" vanished.

Kramnik is a legend, and a theoretician with lasting contributions. I wasn't playing chess during the era of his dominance, but it's amazing to see how much respect, love and admiration the newer generations of Russian top players have towards him. I hope he'll continue having fun with the game, even if he won't be participating in future classical tournaments :)

I've always said Big Vlad deserves to be honored more as one of the chess greats. Everyone always mentions Kasparov, but why not the man that beat him, and actually quite badly, not losing a single game? He was also a great contributor to chess theory (much more than for example Anand) and simply a nice person to be around. Luckily I actually managed to 'meet' him at least once, this year at Tata Steel. One of the greats, especially remembering his 1. d4 games.

I'd say Kramnik and Anand both contributed equally to chess theory. Don't forget Kramnik once mentioned that Anand and he probably were ahead of all other players in chess theory in 2013 when Anand lost his title to Magnus Carlsen ... I see no difference both are very great players! :D Unfortunately I never met Kramnik personally. But I met Anand once in the late 1980s. He then was the kindest chess player I ever met! :D
@JPCPSeto
@JPCPSeto 5 жыл бұрын
@@MusikPiratCH On the other hand, Anand said this: "I don't know exactly how many lines he's established, but you get the impression that for the last 10 years we've only been using his ideas. ... His stamp on opening theory is much more significant than mine." It's from an interview in 2012 (www.chessintranslation.com/2012/05/anands-whychess-interview/)

@@JPCPSeto If you compare Khalifman's series Openings according to Anand/Kramnik (and for Black: Karpov) you get another impression: 14 tombes on 1 e4 (Anand) and only 6 tombes on 1 Nf3 (Kramnik)! :D Anand would never put his own contributions over every body elses! That's how humble Anand as a personality is! Please keep this in mind! :D
