Russian memory is very selective. To them the war started in 1941 with Operation Barbarossa. They try to eradicate from the world's memory the crimes and atrocities they committed in years preceding to Barbarossa - for example teaming up with Hitler in 1939 with a non-aggression pact to invade eastern Poland in 1939 and the massacre of Polish POWs and intelligentsia in Katyn and other places in 1940. Not to forget the thousands of civilians who were send to Siberia and the Gulag.

While the soldiers were men, yes, women played an equally important role. they made the uniforms they wore, the guns they held, the gear they carried, the planes, tanks and ships they crewed. He wants to keep their legacy alive by having their role in history taught more to young people.
