Just checked the replay info with the Hetzer myself... The SU-5 wasn't firing because he had already spent all his ammo. The 152mm Mortar NM. Mod 1931 only allows for a 12 shell capacity. Which means an arty that was without any remaining ammo did more damage to the Hetzer than anyone else on the enemy team. He went into that fight knowing he was never going to win it. As an arty player who looks down on intentional suicide, he has my salute.
@ovni22958 жыл бұрын
I just wish he'd teamed up with one of the other vehicles. An arty with no ammo can still scout and serve as a distraction! Still, you're right, he deserves a salute for going in knowing he'd die.
@SemiFakeAsian8 жыл бұрын
I hope jingles sees this.
@canis_lupus22208 жыл бұрын
Totally right about the scouting (But that's the obvious lack of communication of the entire team just like them coming one by one). On the other hand I see no reason why to go on a suicide mission in front of a Hetzer's gun to feed him another kill. Not sure it's worth a salute. At that point I would write in open chat: "Out of ammo, enjoy your invader medal. GG" and then go have a break while the clocks runs down. And if he decides to leave the cap and come after me instead then he'd get a free afk kill.

The German term "Hetzer" actually means someone who more or less actively pursues someone or something with great haste. It originates from hunting activities. In modern German, it is also used to indicate that someone rushes something. "Nun hetz doch nicht so", for example, meaning "don't rush so much".
@tobiasreinhold76428 жыл бұрын
BTW: The final "Don't run, you'll just die tired" sentence is actually a perfect description of what someone in a Hetzer WOULD say. This line would fit the name of the tank to a T.

another reason for ramming in the t34 was that the throttle and brakes worked in a way that reulted in a runaway tank if the driver was knocked out!

@paulschauer62738 жыл бұрын
Another reason is that since the Soviet Union was pumping so many t34s out they could just destroy there tank by ramming it into tigers and other tabks and the crew that survived just went back to the factory got another tank and away they went
@Depipro8 жыл бұрын
As historians pointed out on that issue: "Those T-34s decidedly slammed themselves into much bigger tanks not because their drivers were brave, but because their drivers were dead." Compare it to the dead man's button in a train, except that letting go of it had the opposite effect (and it was a foot pedal, rather than a hand button). It did have quite an unsettling effect on the German tank crews, I believe.

Artillery tracers used to be visible regardless of where you were looking. They were removed due to mods making the tracers permanent.

Jingles, as an addendum thingy. The t34 controls acted in such a way that when the driver took their foot of the accelerator the tank lurched forward at speed. This is also where many of the stories of Soviet tanks 'ramming' or advancing on the Germans even when damaged/on fire etc. It can be read about in a chapter in the book Blood Red Snow, which is a German Soldiers diary from the Eastern Front.
@Raptor7477 жыл бұрын
The reasons the USSR tank forces got so overwhelmingly wrecked in 1941 (and, often, in 1942, and even in 1943) involved much more than just inadequate fuel and ammo for training (in general, they DID have adequate fuel and ammo for training, but the USSR placed so little value on training that they rarely bothered with more than rudimentary training until later in the war, and even then, not much more than rudimentary), it was that their training, doctrine, and deployment was unbelievably awful, plus the general lack of radios in the tanks (so little communication and coordination) For example, Soviet tankers were all trained to operate buttoned up--in other words, the Commander would never open the hatch and look around--so they had terrible situational awareness and tended to drive straight into ambushes, prepared enemy positions, or even just right past enemy tanks or AT guns without seeing them. Doctrine also included rigid adherence to orders (which were often vague and stupid--like sending a group of tanks in the general direction of the enemy without any support and totally inadequate supply), staying with formations, and more. The USSR deliberately avoided any kind of gunnery training more than rudimentary stuff, and it never did so much as bore-sighting their guns. The reason is because Stalin felt that it would build a culture of professionalism amongst the army (something he feared in general, not just in tankers), which he felt a threat to communism (yes, really. Not making this up). This is a big part of why Soviet tanks were terribly inaccurate at substantial ranges--their guns weren't bore-sighted and they had little gunnery training. Most Soviet commanders--Zhukov among them--ordered their tanks into action with far too little support and far too little buildup of supplies, with little or no intelligence or recon, vague mission briefings, and orders that were either extremely vague or out of touch with reality (like being far too specific, which they were expected to follow regardless of the reality on the ground). Stalin and the Stavka always insisted on immediate counterattacks before Soviet forces were even remotely ready/supplied/supported, and these counterattacks were promptly slaughtered by the efficient combined arms operations and highly skilled veterans of the German army. Amusingly enough, the real commander behind the successful encirclement of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad (which certainly wasn't Zhukov's doing, no matter how much the credit-stealer tried to have everyone believe) managed to succeed because he was actually given time to build up supplies, bring in adequate infantry and artillery support, get decent intel and scouting, and hash out a good plan.

About soviet tanks ramming other tanks while it may have happened a lot of the cases where a T-34 would ram or attempt a ram would because the driver was dead. The way the controls worked in a T-34 meant that if the driver slumped forward onto the tillers the vehicle would proceed forward and not stop till it hit something. I think this is mention on the Inside the Cheiftains hatch on the T-34-85.

Regarding Soviet tankers ramming the enemy thing. While I won't deny that there were cases where it was done intentionally out of sheer desperation/determination or whatever, there is another thing to keep in mind. From what I recall some of the Soviet tank gearboxes were set up in a way that the brake pedal had to be pressed down if you wanted the tank to stay in place. Let it go and the tank would move. As a result, if a driver got killed during combat, there wouldn't be anyone to apply the brake. As a result, the tank would keep moving froward and you'd get cases where the tank keeps moving even after the entire team has been taken out.

Quick clarification, Jingles: most of the support and resupply units in soviet formations were attached to corps/armies rather than brigades or divisions to try and cut down on the number of supply vehicles needed (ie, the high command would allocate transport units to brigades/divisions needing them most). So the ratio of supply trucks to active tanks was much lower in Soviet vs German units. In the early days, the Luftwaffe had air superiority and Soviet units were unprepared for the large offensives. Resupply units became quickly wiped out in air raids, and tanks ran out of spares + fuel during the first weeks of fierce, highly fluid engagements. This goes a long way in explaining how one can lose ten thousand tanks in a few weeks.

Well, arty usually takes a while to reload so unless you're getting focused down by multiple arties, your tank tends to last at least a few minutes provided you didn't get your engine deck penetrated or the arty isn't firing AP. A bit of maneuvering helps too, its like dodging torpedos in WoWS. I think you can actually see arty tracers now, I saw one when I was going counter battery quite recently. The problem is that you have to spend a while looking for those tracers and time not spent firing shells at the enemy is time spent not doing damage, and sometimes, the damage that arty do is the thing that determines a victory or loss, especially if your allies can't penetrate an enemy tank's armor and your big HE shells are the only things that can harm them.
@jackee-is-silent29388 жыл бұрын
Jingles, you can see artillery tracer or other tracers. I believe the rules are you have to be aiming within something like 10 to 20 degrees of the direction of the tank firing the round and you only see the tracer within your visibility range or in artillery overhead view, standard or the Battle Assistance angled view. I was playing artillery and almost got killed a counter battery shot and had to call it out to other friendly arty so they'd know to relocated after firing.

you forgot to mention, jingles, that soviet tanks did not have the same brakes and accelerator pedals that most other tanks did. Many of those rams were the result of the driver being shot up and thus being unable to slow or stop the tank. it wasnt always about being brave or following orders, much of it was just circumstantial.
@frederickschulze80148 жыл бұрын
13:32 I'm pretty sure that actually hit him because I don't see the crater where the shot landed. It hit him in the front right corner of his tank and his tracks probably absorbed part of the damage. This tank is based on a heavy tank hull (much like the Conqueror GC) so it's no surprise that he would take that little damage from the Birch Gun's small cannon.
@A_PieceOfTheMoon8 жыл бұрын
One other reason for the ramming stories is that for example a T-34's transmission system if you're not depressing the clutch, it will move forward by itself even if the driver dies.

Everyone remembers their first Hetzer. Thanks for pointing that out Jingles
@Vailey8 жыл бұрын
Jingles, the second reason for soviet tankers ramming their enemies is because the drivers were dead. Driving system is set up (at least in T-34, but probably in BT series too) so that you stop the tank by pulling the leaver, and the tank goes forward by itself when no one is pulling anything. And you can't pull anything when you are dead. At least I hope so.

actually, the ramming soviet tanks was a thing because they worked like a tractor or a car, you lift your foot off the clutch and the tank starts moving. so in a lot of cases the tank rammed something because it was pointed at the enemy and the driver was dead

Bt-7 was not slaughtered . Most of them was lost from engine problems, like engine broke up, gearshift and transmission often broke up too. Engine had bad habit to burst into flames from time to time. Fuel and parts were mostly not available, so if tank broke up- he was destroyed by crew (quite big part), Germans or captured (big part too). Most of them were used as long as they, well, drove. Most possible from 8k of tanks in german hands was 300-500 fully operatable tanks.

The major reason the BT-7 failed in 1941 was mainly because of massive surprise of 22 June '41. BT-7 was designed for rapid attacks combined with fast relocation on European highways. Many people forget, that it was better armed than any LT of the era and they compare BT-7 to German medium tanks. It's just like comparing motorbike to minivan.

It looked like the Crusier II was using the 3.7 inch Howitzer (that's 94mm) and he tried to use AP on the front of the Hetzer. So he could have hurt him badly if he'd played it right.

"Disappointingly, there seem to be a shortage of hetzees for the Hetzer to hetz." Possibly the single best sentence you have ever spoken Jingles.

Those crates in the cap circle, I think they should be used to restock your tank. If you stand right next to them (in your own cap circle) you should get one more shot say every 5 seconds. That would also make it a strategic move to destroy the enemies' boxes

I like the idea of some youtuber doing a series on the accomplishments of new players to wot/wow, because even noob players have awesome battles once in a while. Maybe do a critique on their play and give tips to help em improve.

This video clearly shows the difference between passive Hetzing (hiding beside the truck waiting for Hetzees) and active Hetzing (going out to to look for Hetzees). Very important to know, Jingles! haha

Salute to that Hetzer driver, Herr Jingles. Really miss mine, though more bcoz of that 105 Short Derp. And to him, I laugh on his behalf: Hezhezhez...

Those were promising tactics on those players. We can expect much from them in the future!

I think there should be Armoured Warfare style counter-battery mechanics in WoT, to encourage relocation and stuff

Also, they tended to ram because the throttle a "tractor" style where no pressure on the throttle meant wide open. Some of those heroic "ramming" tanks had dead drivers.

22:05 "The Matilda is the most overpowered tier 4 tank in the game." You're not doing much for my self esteem, Jingles. My only 2 top guns were in that tank.

I do love me an in depth, analytical, well written and thought-out video description. Not like this one.

I loved my Hetzer and Matilda when I had them. Both are insanely fun to drive around, especially when you bounce rounds from nearly everything that shoots at you xD

Was it good ? It was ! Great Jingles that you also show the lower Tiers ! ! ! Lots are playing low Tiers, it is a lot of fun ! ! ! I think lots of players are (pretty) low Tiers, beginners obviously, but also the guys that have to earn their money (upgrades and so on) slowly, with no (or hardly) gold. (like me, though having just few Tier 7 and 6) !

It is nice when a team throws away a five to one numerical advantage by fighting like movie henchman. That kind of thinking is how Kolobanov's Medals get minted. That's how I ended up with mine in an M10 Wolverine :)

Always nice when someone lets you shotgun them in arty, isnt it? Did the same to a poor Toldi III the other day and then a PZ, blew the last guys tracks off and got a cold blooded medal before being sicked by a luchs .... sadly, even though its a turreted arty, birch cant soak that autocannon and turn to face at the same time :(

There are still artillery tracers Jingles, only tracers from tanks and tank destroyers have been removed. Yet most arties have stopped countering enemy arties since they are usually too inaccurate to hit them anyway, and since the enemy artilleries are unlikely to do much damage, so they are low priorities nowadays.
@gaertnerpoetschke8 жыл бұрын
Objection Sir, there are still tracers for artillery
