World of Warships Blitz - Japanese destroyer "Hayate" review

See, here's the thing. I don't like torpedo boat destroyers, and while it doesn't get any more torpedo-boatey than the Shimakaze, the Hayate has a slight gunboat slant - only, is that a good thing...?

One note here regarding the Legendary Commander that you get with the Hayate. He's a great compliment on the Asashio and Yudachi. His skills mesh well with both of those boats. As always thanks for the videos.

What the Vermont did to you the Kansas, the New Mexico, and the Colorado do that to me when I'm playing as a destroyer. Sometimes they sink me that type of salvo.

Nice review. But not, this ship can be too expensive. And make a lot of money in a ship who can be deleted fast in a cv battle, no thanks I have the Smolensk for that. 😂 The more interesting point, it's the new legendary commander. Can be great on all the Japan DD (for additional smoke and engine booster) with or without torpedoes booster.

As a halfway decent gunboat DD player, this ship looks a bit awkward to me. Compared to the Shima, the gunpower is better, but not enough to allow it to take on the bad boys like Z52, Grozovoi and Khabarovsk. So you cannot gunboat much, and Shimas guns are quite satisfactory for limited tasks, like setting BBs on fire. The fundamental problem is that there are 1) people who like Shima, just yolo BBs and be happy, or 2) people who, like me, want to assassinate the category 1) people and thereafter shoot at everything that moves and occasionally throw in your torps. Hayate fits only category 1) well. It is not a proper gunboat. So you could just as well pick a Shima and save a lot of money... Maybe I am a bit harsh here, since DD fights rarely happen with both ships at full health. In practice, Hayate might do quite well, especially since the average player will be above average in skill. But I would much rather play a gun-focused hybrid (Z52, Grozovoi) or a pure gunboat (Khaba) than a torpedo-focused hybrid.

To me, the concepts of "extreme reload, high alpha" torp strikes and gunboat are simply diametral, unless you're rushing (which I don't see as a viable strat in T10 unless it's late-game). If you can only get your torps on target every 90s, you need to have the element of surprise, otherwise your chances of actually hitting anything are slim. Gunboating between reloads means that you do _not_ have the element of surprise. This is one reason I'm doing so much better in something like the Grozovoi, which is an excellent balance of speed, rapid gunboating and opportunistic, quick-reloading torpedoes. Shima works well for Shima things - use your speed to get into ambush positions between torpedo drops, and focus on that. Hayate tries to do both, and for me, that negates both, especially against at least semi-competent opponents. So that was a long-winded way of saying that I completely agree with you.

If you've just started, I'd recommend going up to tier 5 or 6, and trying things out for a bit. The game does get a lot harder around T8, and the investment in terms of resources does get higher as well. The Japanese line focuses more on long range gunnery, the traditional US line up to Montana pretty much as well, although they go more for rate of fire than precision. The German line is great fun for aggressive players that don't want to sit at the rear lines, and get up close, but requires more map awareness to decide where to go.

Hey terry I know that you don’t like CV’s that much and honestly neither do I. They just aren’t that fun and engaging to me. Though I was curious if you were going to do any more reviews on the American, Japanese, and the soon to come British carriers? I just like when you give history lessons on the ships “Especially carriers”, since most of them existed and have interesting histories behind them. You always explain things very good and clearly and your videos are always a joy to watch.

Pfft sail backwards. I’ve sailed backwards in the ‘burgs lol. When you need to go bow in towards a BB and your bow only has 1/3 of your guns you go booty first… lol it’s not practical at all. Although I do love the Konigs and Nuremberg. Not gonna lie pretty sure I got blapped out of existence when I tried it. I didn’t know what kiting was yet I just started the game. Yes I honestly thought kiting was sailing in reverse towards the enemy when I was a nOOb. Damn FNG’s I love DD’s and BB’s which makes for a good combo, I work well fighting DDs in my BB and vica versa. This DD doesn’t look fun for me. I like hard hitting fast guns. Or TBD hybrids like the US line. Only Torp DD I like are the Euros.

What you said about shoot with hayate make it torp doesn't work I don't agree. In tier X game there are only a few moments when you can use torp effectively, you just need to stay stealth when those moments come not the whole match. Play it like a Z46 with better torpedoes, not like a Shima with better guns. Anyone who have play both Shima and Z46 will know what to expect from this ship.

Yudachi works great because she's a T7. You can get away with the whole "long reload, hard hit" torpedo setup in mid-tier a lot more than later imo.

This is not a gunboat DD. Its a ship to torp first and then set fires, I think. You need to torp from stealth and then pop out and set fires. Also, sometimes German DD players get a sense of invincibility when they face Japanese boats. They are good for torping and even gunning down in the Japanese boats. You should play Shimakaze someday. You aren’t shy to fire guns so that would be interesting.

Yes, that's sort of the idea. The problem is, that kind of requires you to be in a position to do this, and that's actually pretty rare. I find that 75% of the time, I don't get to play the role a ship might be designed for, and have to fill in. That's why I prefer multirole ships that may not be highly specialised, but can contribute to the team win in all scenarios.

The whole concept behind this ship is irrational. Is the shimi has 3x5-trops standard, then the bay ate in point of fact exchanging 1/3 of the shimi’s torps [except for that 1 time only reload] for a very modest improvement in guns [who no one in their right mind will count on] and some more irrelevant AA damage. While sacrificing a DD’s lifeblood, speed and maneuverability. Clearly this is a case of tech-tree beats premium. And by considerable amounts. I am one torp does 5k damages. It’s gonna take a lot of fun shot and fires to equal just one extra torp hit.

There are a couple of top tier premiums I could do without - Smolensk, first and foremost. Benham is kinda broken as well, especially that it's T9 - the sheer amount of torps it can spew is ridiculous. This one, I'd say isn't much worse than a Shima. It's not a great gunboat, the increase in AA is meaningless, yeah the smokes are nice, especially with the legendary commander, but Gearing has better smokes and is a better gunboat. For me, in the current meta, smoke is a situational tool, rather than something you camp. People are decent at blindfiring, you'll usually take damage even in smoke, and radars are damn well everywhere. I'm quite interested to try out Daring, I think the short duration / fast cooldown fuel smoke concept might work better. Yeah, torp bugs are just urgh. Too many bugs these days.

Harugumo is a pretty one-dimensional destroyer. It is only good against BBs (very good, actually). Against CVs and cruisers, it struggles more than the averge destroyer due to its very large size and bad handling. Against other destroyers, Harugumo is only viable at close range. At long ranges, the astronomical shell arcs mean that hitting an enemy destroyer is next to impossible. Ships like Z52, Grozovoi or Khabarovsk will tear it apart beyond medium range. Harugumo is essentially the complete opposite of a Shimakaze, but similar in that it is quite limited in the tasks it can accomplish.

Not my type of destroyer. Especially with a gamble-or-pay 54000 gold scheme. No thanks. I put my choice on the Somers if I want a premium tX DD instead. I am always extremely satisified with my Halland.
