This was the original design for the North Carolina as it was supposed to have 12x 14 inch/50 caliber guns in 3 quad turrets. They changed it to 9x 16 inch/45 caliber guns. Thats why the armor was so thin.

Yep. Thats the version which fulfills the London Naval treaty limitations. But they made the right choice with the NC class because the Axis powers ignored this treaty anyways.

Reason why the armament was changed was thanks to the invocation of the escalator clause following japans abandonment of the treaty. This allowed them to add 16" guns and, luckily for the americans, the hulls were still in early enough construction stages to allow for the change.

Before Japan and Italy backed out of the London Naval Treaty limiting guns to 14" max this was close to the original design of the NC, but due to Italy and Japan leaving the Escalator Clause kicked in now allowing 16" guns and with the ships not far into construction the design was altered to opt for the 16"/45 Mk 6 guns instead.

This was design XVI of the fast battleship projects that were being researched around 1937. You can see the original specs that were researched by Norman Friedman in his book "U.S. Battleships: An Illustrated Design History". It shows the sketches for Florida with 12(14" inch) 356mm/50cal Mk11 guns. If I'm not mistaken, this was design XVI-D. I got her myself and she's not a bad ship. I just wouldn't brawl with her against anything that has more hp than she does. Since I've had her, she can basically shred any cruiser below her tier. I take her into co-op frequently so I can go up against ships that I may not have in random so I can see how she performs. Sometimes coming into brawling range can't be avoided. One of my manuevers to get out of that situation is if possible to wait until all of my main guns have reloaded then i unleash a full broadside. Anything Tier VII and below it works often. Tier VIII sometimes, Tier IX is where it gets tricky. I just wish they would give her a modest hp buff so she can stay alive longer. A couple thousand hp is not too much to ask.

I don't play this ship as a backline sniper at all. I play it quite aggressively since it has such good concealment and AA. Combined with the turret angles, it's pretty easy to stay alive until the enemy get annoyed enough to focus you. The only issue is getting heavy citadels through the bow. The AA is good until you have two tier 8 CVs focussing you down. I did ~50k dmg to aircraft and shot down 20 planes before dying.

Hey Mountbatten, when you talked about not getting citadels from the bow, in one of my first matches with it, I was bow on to a Gneisenau where, I am almost certain, he cit me straight through the nose. Maybe it was due to shorter range or something but just was wondering how that maybe worked in your opinion, since I was almost angled directly at him when it happened. Maybe it's because Thunderer can overmatch most cruisers in the game, has the strongest HE shell in the game, doesn't get overmatched by every 38+ cm gun, has supercruiser dispersion, not Slava dispersion (which is crap at close range), has 5 improved repairs, not 4 standard repairs...

It reminds me of the Scharnhorst but trading some of that armor (and torps) for range and accuracy. Just moving that slider from semi-close brawling to further range sniping. I play Scharnhorst as a cruiser with really good armor and solid guns, it doesn't BB very well for me but it can absolutely bully any cruiser it runs up on. It gives me that same exact vibe but the exact opposite.

Well, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are battlecruisers. The British term them as pocket battleships since they're a bit smaller in size and guns compared to the battleships that were coming out, yet they were heavily armored for a regular cruiser.

I have to remind people, this thing does not have armor that is significantly worse than its t7 contemporaries. In fact in some ways it's better. The colorado as an example is entirely covered in 26mm plating, this does mean it shatters same tier light cruiser he without ifhe, however it doesn't have any better overmatch resistance. Meanwhile florida has that 37mm deck armor, it's no gneisenau, but that 37mm plate protects it from much of the long range overmatch and he it's contemporaries suffer from. The citadel is massive and the belt is super thin though.

FLORIDA is the ORIGINAL 14"-gunned design for the NORTH CROLINA Class. The guns were changed to 16" when the Washington Naval Treaty restricti9ons were aborted in 1936 and the 14" guns were immediately increased to the 16" (improved COLORADO 45-caliber guns, not the IOWA & MONTANA 50-caliber 16" version). These ships with 14" guns would have had more guns (3 more) and perhaps (I am not sure) a higher muzzle velocity than the 14" used in the last end-of-WWI 14"-gunned US battleships, though otherwise the same ammo (NOTE: These projectiles from 1942 and after, in the 1500-pound 14" Mark 16 MODs 8-10 AP shells, were the best shells ever made for a battleship gun, only matched by the last, late-WWII 2700-pound 16" Mark 8 MOD 6 AP shells, due to greatly superior heat treatment techniques). Due to design timing, the armor or other ship properties were not upgraded to match the bigger guns, with the SOUTH DAKOTA Class having the armor upgrades to try to protect against 16" shells (thicker deck and main gun mount armor and inclined, slightly thicker, top-over-bottom belt armor with thick lower belt armor to stop diving shells hitting under the waterline belt area), though any US BB armor before MONTANA was actually too thin for stopping those 16" Mark 8 super-heavy AP shells at optimum ranges.

Are we playing the same ship?? Against 5 and six sure when you get uptiered you can’t Tank anything or pen consistency broadside bb mostly overpens on Cruisers , reload time is absolutely ridiculous. The armor scheme is trash you get massive pen damage from every angle . The AA is good that’s it

Sea Lord Mountbatten I tried two different builds and at distance all of it the ship can’t fight any T7 BB‘s can’t Tank any damage or against T8 no chance it’s just a bad Ship . With a faster reload and a little better armor. It has to be able to trade out faster if it’s against big guns. A Sinop will smash Florida in 4 Volleys. If you have more tips I’ll be happy to listen 😊 btw Love the Channel

Art Karounos sir at around 17-18km, this ship is truely a sniper. If targets won’t show you broadside, switch to HE. You’ve got enough guns that even with a 33 sec reload it will work. Stay stern toward the target and take advantage of those turret angles. Thanks for the support man!

Florida is not overpowered. Played it on my own and it is by far not as powerful. The HE is very pathetic and AP loses a lot of pen and utility on range. It is not a bad ship, but not as good as you say.

Florida, they took a North Carolina, nerfed it down to T7, then nerfed it again because they wouldnt wanna miss any nerfs, then topped it off with the extra USN mediocrity nerf just to make sure that it was as utterly ugh as it can be. 14" guns with a 33s reload is just ugh, nerfed its damage because naw, you cant do any damage. 213mm armor because no, you are not allowed to take a hit.

you got your range extended so the value changed cause it gives you the dispersion at your new max range.

The 204m is at 18.6km, with the range module fitted int he third slot that increases the range to 21.6km and subsequently the dispersion to 229m.

They could have just given us the rewards directly for those missions and sell the Florida for cash. I don't understand why do people keep repeating it's in the shop. I don't care. It's behind a pay wall. The token system is useless, it's there just to make people buy the loot boxes. This event could have been done without lootboxes and tokens, just make the rewards be part of the missions to unlock the Kansas and sell the camos and ships in the premium shop for cash/armory for gold.

Mountbatten, please. I like your reviews but you are completely wrong about the dispersion. Florida uses the 'Graf Spee' formula, found on ships like Alaska, Champagne and of course Graf Spee. And Slava's dispersion is not 'better the further away', she simply has one of the best dispersion values at range and relatively bad when close - but it IS better at closer ranges (just not very much). Please stop spreading this misinformation about Slava's dispersion.

I mean, while it has the lack of repair, I wouldn't make a great deal out of 25 mm plating, when all it does over other T7 BBs is that it takes full pens of non-IFHE T5-7 CLs. A group of cruisers that is small and will likely run IFHE anyway. Also, for a T9 supercruiser, close in dispersion is bad, lack of hydro is bad, reload is utter trash. Even comparing it to Azuma, Azuma has more hp, has more and faster heals, is more accurate at any range, has better HE by a country mile with better dpm and fire chance... comparing it to Alaska would be an utter joke.
