Scharnhorst was a battleship, and the reason why is honestly pretty simple. Battlecruisers are not designed to go head to head with the main elements of the opposing battle line. They are not designed with the battleships of their opponents imagined as their main enemies, and this is reflected in the fact that they are generally designed with armor meant to withstand cruiser-caliber fire. Even when one considers the German battlecruisers of the Great War, these were NOT armored in the same manner as the dreadnoughts of the High Seas Fleet, and while they boasted heavy armor for a battlecruiser, they were still not meant to get into slugging matches with the likes of the Grand Fleet's dreadnoughts. Scharnhorst was armored specifically against the French Dunkerque, with its new 13-inch guns. While the Dunkerque itself was not necessarily a true battleship, it DID have battleship-grade guns, which means that Scharnhorst was indeed armored to be able to fight against enemy capital ships. Furthermore, the 11-inch guns Scharnhorst was completed with were not her INTENDED armament; the 15-inch guns we see in-game on Gneisenau were. These turrets, however, were not quite ready at the time of the ships' construction, and the improved 11-inch guns were chosen as an interim solution as well as to calm British fears about the purpose of these ships. Regardless of their actual role in practice, these ships were designed to be both armored and armed against contemporary battleships (particularly the French), and to be able to defeat them in a straight up fight. Commerce raiding was not a major design emphasis, and they actually had quite a number of factors that actively hampered their ability to do that. Tl;dr - These ships were designed to fill the role of a battleship, not a battlecruiser. Just because they ended up being used that way does not mean that they are suddenly battlecruisers.

Most of the world during the time she had been completed were using 15-16 inch guns. So In my book she is a German Battlecruiser; smaller/less guns to maintain decent armor and good speed.

Nagato has the highest speed and thinest belt out of the Big 7, so is she a battlecruiser?The KGVs has smaller guns than what everyone was building at the time with armmor to protect from bigger guns and high speed, does that make them a BC? Scharnhorst may not be the ideal battleline ship to the german navy, compared to Bismarck and the H class designs, but she is a battleship

@@laudennis8633 one of the points I made was that a German battlecruiser had smaller/less guns than a battleship and more armor. Smaller Caliber doesn’t mean a battleship is actually a battlecruiser if it makes up for it in number of guns. The Gangut was built just 3 years after hms dreadnought who also sported 12 inch guns. The Nagato (built in 1917) had an armor belt about as thick as the Iowa (1944) which nearly everyone agrees was a battleship. The KGV had 14 inch guns compared to the 15-16 inch gun norm during his service wasn’t a big enough gap for it to be considered a battlecruiser in terms of gun caliber. (Plus it had 10 guns compared to the 8-9 gun norm at that time)

Easier to dodge an accurate ship though. Bad dispersion is the key to hitting a long range target, unless you have good shell velocites, it is why juking IJN CAs is so easy, super accurate and slow shells, mean one drop or turn and their salvo completely misses.

Agree. The guns are simply not good enough. They lack overmatch and that's ok. They lack pen and that's okay. Reload is also not that great. Secondaries are mediocre. She was heavily nerfed with the 10% AP cap on DDs. So at least they could make her main guns more accurate and make her unique in a way of being the only accurate German BB and honour her record.

Scharnhorst is a battleship, because we germans declared it as such. End of story, there is no argument in my opinion. Graf Spee was declared as a "Panzerschiff" or rougly tranlated, a "tank-ship" at the time.

The United States called USS Alaska a "large cruiser" for political reasons (spending oversight), but it may not accurately be described as such. Maybe there was a particular reason for Germany to call it a battleship? So that Germany would have more capital ships to boast?

My Take on Scharnhorsts Classification, she is a fast Battleship. Germany classified her as Battleship back then, The Brits did too after learning about her armor. And the Battlecruiser Classification didn't exist in germany. So That's that.

Battlecruiser designation did indeed exist in germany (O-class battlecruiser project, the Siegfried and Agir in WOWS), but the scharnhorsts were always designated battleships by the DKM.

I rarely take it out in randoms anymore, but secondary build Scharn worked wonders for me in Brawl and previous seasons of Ranked. For me, the armour on Scharn and Gneis put it just in front of the Prinz Heinrich: you can take hits that do much more damage to the German BCs, and it allows you to survive much longer in small format matches while also getting your secondaries into the fight. Luckily, I've been around long enough to have a bunch of late-stage German commanders, so I can just change my secondary captain out for one that's more focused on survivability if needed.

Brawl was hilarious, T7 brawls in my favorite. I'm sure you are one of the better Scharns but I was shocked at the number of bad Scharns that would go full broadside to dump their torps, only to get sunk by a wall of battleship shells.

Scharnhorst could use some gun buffs, either improved AP angles like Hood and DoY or better accuracy. Right now she is very meh, guns can't overmatch and yet have dreadful dispersion and poor AP pen. HE is German, so it sucks as well. Back in the day WG made her guns too weak in exchange for armor and torps, but forgot to buff their performance every time they kept introducing better ships

It was not WG, it was the history. The main battery of the Scharnhorst was not better than this. The 38cm guns were not ready so they decided to arm her with 28cm. They were way underpowered. And for a game how much do you want to buff 28cm without making them overpowered? You have 9 guns instead of 6 of her sister Gneisenau with 38cm guns and reload is way faster. And historically Scharnhorst was well protected. People need to know and understand ships if they buy them. If you purchase a premium Scharnhorst you will get a Scharnhorst. If you are not sure just look up wikipedia what that ship was about.

@@JohnnyC01 I know a lot about history. If you think WoWS should be balanced around historical accuracy you are in the wrong shop I'm afraid, since WG clearly don't give a damn about that. That being said, do you really think 9 28cm guns with 20 secs reload is acceptable? Guess what, it's not. HE DPM is terrible and AP is anemic at best. Is this historically accurate? Likely. Is this a terrible in-game experience? Hell yes. Hood is way better for example, simply due to more consistent guns that overmatch. Sinop has tons of armour and huge guns. KGV has brutal HE. Colorado and Nagato have dispersion, pen and overmatch. Even Gneisenau is better, with improved secondaries and AA and overmatch (when the guns actually hit something). Scharnhorst is sadly at the back of the pack atm. She CAN do stuff but only if she is allowed to get close and personal, which can only happen in low populated environments like ranked and brawls, and even then it's not THAT easy. She NEEDS some gun buffs in order to remain at least playable in T9 randoms.

Thank you so much for posting this. This is by far my most played ship and somewhere in my top 5 of favorites. Nice to see her getting the recognition. I received mine in a xmas container a few weeks after I started playing. As much as we love to play her it seems that most people truly hate to play against it, and for good reason. Having this ship to fall back on made the Colorado grind (and most of the other US battleships) much less of a torture.

It will always bother me that Scharnhorst AP shells for some reason have an alpha of a meager 7,600, but Graf Spee AP with the EXACT SAME GUNS magically has an alpha of 8,400. I really wish WG would just buff it up to 8,400 to make it consistent. If I could give one buff to this ship, that would be it. It would help poor Scharny out in the meta anyway. The guns do feel quite noticeably lackluster in punching power when compared to Spee.

I remember back in the day when WoWs was the new WG game and my hole clan from WoT jumped in. One of them gifted me the Shiny Horse and ever since she became my favorite premium besides Derpitz. She is my to-go ship on T-VII ranked games and she will always have a place in my heart

Scharny was my first pemium, played it a lot until recently. While I do run secondary build (because I use same captain on tirp and pom), after my first handful of times playing it like a battleship, I learned my lesson. I always play like the Alaska, seeking cover early and only pushing late game. It has given me my highest kill game (7). I love her.

I've literally been playing the scharnhorst since it released and it's my favourite ship. I played more battles with it alone than I have all my other ships combined. I slapped with it in brawls the other week. Went on a 6 game win streak before I finally lost one. Love that thing even today 😂

Hello Sea Lord! Mazda6Red2021 here. The Sharnhorst was my first premium and one of my favorite ships as a kid because of her interesting history and as you state, her uniqueness. I have the standard version and the B version. The standard is set up the way you have yours set up and I agree with your thoughts in today's meta. The B version is set up as a hybrid secondary build, which I use in tier 7 brawls, i.e., Lutjens, and 7 ranked. She is still one of my favorite ships to play, in the afore mentioned battles and those rare randoms where you're top tier! I have noticed that occasionally when I'm bottom tier, the enemy doesn't pay much attention to the Sharn. There mistake! Although, I probably just blew that small advantage. I have every camo, except the ice camo, can't seem to get that one. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos as I find them, fun, informative, and professional. Thanks for all your hard work!

I love my Scharn.. she still slaps cruisers like "who's your daddy!" slappage. Pure hell on DD's that get to close. She's nimble, fast packs torps, fire fast, and well armored. She's a sweet ride still after all these years. One of the few early premiums that have held up through the years.

Scharnhorst was a German capital ship, alternatively described as a battleship or battlecruiser, of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. She was the lead ship of her class, which included her sister ship Gneisenau. The ship was built at the Kriegsmarinewerft dockyard in Wilhelmshaven; she was laid down on 15 June 1935 and launched a year and four months later on 3 October 1936. Completed in January 1939, the ship was armed with a main battery of nine 28 cm (11 in) C/34 guns in three triple turrets. Plans to replace these weapons with six 38 cm (15 in) SK C/34 guns in twin turrets were never carried out.

Yeah, I loved my Scharnhorst from the moment I got it, which was the first day it was available. Has some of the best lines of any BB in the game, for one thing. However, much as I love it, it gets in too many tier 9 matches, in which it's, well, ineffectual most of the time. Not all the time, but most of the time it just doesn't make much of a difference in the match. It can be a monster in brawl, ranked and the weekly operations, so that's where I tend to focus its time.

Scharnhorst (AKA Shiny Horse) was the first prem I bought and the selling point to me at the time (and know to be fair) is that she's the best cruiser in the game, because she works best when played as one, even if she is a very, very big cruiser. Still have lots of fun in her, like Atago, she just never seems to date.

the most fun way to play scharnhorst imo is like a heavy cruiser by building into her maneuverability, turret traverse and main battery reload (building into main battery reload and turret traverse allowsd you have the guns turn 180 degrees at 18.1 sec and a reload of 20 sec base and building into maneuverabilty giving you a rudder shift time of 11.6 sec and a turning circle radius of 800m. i.e. allowing you to have some awesome MLG gunslinger playstyle )

North Cape was the first, best mini-campaign I played in WoWs. I still use Scharnhorst (and to a lesser extent, Duke of York). The combination of Scharnhorst features just seems to mesh well for me; she's adaptable and performs reliably in any situation, against any foe. On top of that, she's beautiful.

I like Scharnhorst, I bought her when I got my free super containers and a coupon for 100% return in doubloons for my birthday on Feb 9th used the gold to get the permanent camo for GK and also got the tier 6 BB West Virginia. I play allot of operations and they are tier 6 and 7 so I make pretty good credits premium account or not using them for operations. Then I got a free teir 7 destroyer out of one of the supercontainers. The Sims, I believe it was?

Considering the Alaska has larger 12 inch guns, with improved pen angles, that hit harder, and similarly hard to kill, I would put Scharnhorst solidly in the battle cruiser category, at least in my mind.

Don't listen to Mountbatten's advice about skipping out on a full secondary build for your Scharnhorst captains, especially if you're like me and have been stretching/utilizing that same one high level BB captain across all your other German BBs too like in my case across the GK, Pommern, Tirpitz, and Scharnhorst as well. I'm surprised Mountbatten didn't touch on this when he was complaining about Scharnhorst's smaller secondaries not being able to pen 32mms, but it's worth mentioning that after this latest captain rework the IFHE skill is now only a mere 2 pt investment for BB captains and spec'ing IFHE will now give literally all German BB secondaries (even the smaller 105mms on the likes of Scharnhorst and Pommern) the ability to all pen 32mms+... So it's only 2 pts now to get all your secondaries across all your premium German BBs back to penning 32mms and higher, and also there's the added benefit (which Mountbatten did mention this time) of WG also somewhat recently boosting up the max secondary range possible for all the various tiers of German BBs meaning Scharnhorst can now reach out to 9.5km a full 2km+ further than it ever used to be able to reach before. Just pointing out that full secondary specs for German BBs with IFHE have been buffed back up to being viable once again via WG's most recent buffs and changes to the captain skills and ranges of German BB secondaries. So now, as I'm sure WG purposely wants things to be with German BBs both full secondary builds and the traditional BB tank build are just about equally as viable on them, so an active choice must be made by each player based on their preferred play style whether they might prefer the more action based secondary high damage build or a more conservative damage over time build provided by the classic tank build versus one particular build being far and above the clear most optimal choice to go with.

I always find the perception of guns sizes in the game amusing. Sharnhorstt is described as small guns. They are not small in any way, shape or form. For images, search Austrått Fort, and you will find one of those "small" guns. It was used as a coastal battery and was from Gneisenau, and not Scharnhorst, bit still.

Thats how Germany Battlecruiser always been designed. They focused on protection but settle on smaller caliber gun. I Think this lesson learned from Jutland.

You miss out the fact that they wanted to change out the guns for the Twin 380mm guns from Bismarck, the same Gneisenau has in wows. That's a historical change that never happened but was supposed to, but it was delayed and in the end never happened. Also, "Battlecruiser" as a term never existed in the German Navy as Classification, and the Brits reclassified them to Battleships after finding out about their thicc armor. They are fast Battleships. Not Battlecruisers.

The historical WW2 Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were classified by the Germans as battleships. That should settle te issue. It's the British that wrongly labeled them battlecruisers because of speed and gun calibre.

I’ve been using Scharnhorst in ranked to decent effect. I find it hard not to take Sinop as most people in Bronze are currently running less tanky ships that deal damage like KGV or Gneis. But the games I have played in Scharnhorst have been far more fun.

It's a battlecruiser - in the model of earlier German battlecruisers. It gains speed by sacrificing weight from the armament (in this case baby guns), but keeping armour. Contrast with RN battlecruiser philosophy of gaining speed by sacrificing armour but keeping the big guns. It would be nice if an actual battlecruiser line could be introduced to remove the supercruisers and ships like this from making real cruisers cry and BBs laugh when they end up in the same trees.

But it was planned to fit the 38cm guns, but was just never done since the turrets weren’t ready and later in the war the Gneisenau was attacked in a dock if I remember correctly. Also Germany did langem them battleships and their armor reflected that, as well as having the French battleships as a main advisory in mind. Also the US navy classified it as a BB

It's a different generation to Repulse and Renown when 15" weapons were the biggest in the world. How ships are classified is the whole issue. Is it a battleship or battlecruiser - is Hood a battleship or battlecruiser?

Scharnhorst has been quite powercrept. IMHO, as it has Battlecruiser caliber guns (280mm), the accuracy should be improved accordingly.

Agreed. It badly needs better accuracy. You face so much T9 with T7s these days and in such matches she is one of the worst. And its abyssmal 13.7 km concealment with skill doesnt do it any favours either. On some T7s it seems WG designed them with concealment module in mind even tho they cant take it...

Ive been able to make a secondary build work even when facing tier 9s mostly by only using the extra range to punish DDs and cruisers that get too close and then get themselves spotted. I just run it like a cruiser when bottom tier and Im a bully when top tier but the secondary guns are just to keep ships with torps from rushing me since they do break things like torpedo launchers on ships when they hit.

Scharnhorst was built as a commerce raider. It was too fast for battleships to catch and hopefully to armed and armoured for cruisers to beat. In game it's the original super heavy cruiser.

It's funny that you never see arguments about whether Dunkerque was a battlecruiser, when 330mm guns were also undersized for her era and she actually *did * have more battlecruiser-like armor. Scharnhorst was a fast battleship, simply a small one.

I play the Scharn as a cruiser-killer. Otherwise I switch to HE and try to start fires or pop DDs. I haven't found it to be as tanky as its reputation suggests.

Is it that people may not be playing it correctly or that WG created a class of ship (BC) but has yet to make a proper category for them? There are enough BCs in game now and most of them are negatively affected by not having Captain Skills that match the play style required for these unique ships.

I absolutely love my sharnhorst 😊3.4 million elite xp and counting, I play wowsl for 4 years, Graf spee was my very first premium ship , sharnhorst is my second premium ship , sharnhorst has the same guns as Graf spee just a bit longer barrels so more punchy 😂🎉😊

Well the Scharnhorst is a fast battleship not a battlecrusier. The reason its not a battlecrusier is because it has armor and has nothing to do with her 283mm/11inch guns because if that was the case then the HMS renown wouldn't be equipped with 380mm/15inch guns so in other words a battlecrusier is a hybrid between a battleship and a crusier it has the firepower of a BB and the speed of a crusier but significantly weaker armor

I dont get your point as 11:00. Gneisenau is better because 9,5km range secondaries? Scharnhorst also has 9,5km secondary range. Also 32mm pen: Just run IFHE. Full secondary scharni is bonkers in ranked. got like 88% winrate. I agree, T7 BBs are in a shit spot right now. Especially close range ships. If you go main battery its gonna be a bit less shit when uptiered. But we are really talking shades of brown here. However if you just pick it in modes like brawl or ranked with less ships and guaranteed even matchmaker, its a great secondary ship and secondary build is most defenetely better that main battery build for that.

Frankly, everything aside from her guns classify her for the Battleship classification. Even if they're 11in guns, remember that WWI Germany used that calibre of gun in their early dreadnoughts.

Imo scharnhorst is fun and all, but in all honestly I'd rather play gneis now, the 381mm guns pack a lot more of a punch even if you only have 6, the secondaries and aa is better, it's marginally faster and you have more hp while having the same armour. It's not a bad ship, I just think gneis is better

Meh, if you want a really good ship if not even the best tier 7 just play King George V. Fast reload, high alpha damage and hire fire% of her HE shells. It's THE damage dealer.

For me this schip is esence of frustration. This combination of shity shells and shity accurancy. If you stay to far you can't hit barn being inside. When RNG bless you and score a hit HE has no alpha no fire chance. AP at long range has no pen. If you closer you die very quickly from fire. After game changes like armor standardization your AP can overmacht only 19 mm otherwise bounce, she lost full pen on DD and who nowdays care about flooding (hope you guys remember how scary was previous flooding mechanics and the torpedo was real asset, but now.... she colect dust
