The most compelling detonation theory I've heard is not that the shell hit the deck. It hit just below the waterline in a bow wave trough, penetrated a secondary shell storage compartment setting it afire, and then a few minutes later the fire spread detonating main ammo storage.

I think she is really well made balance wise in this game. One of the examples of real ships WG implemented well like the North Carolina back when BBs werent just pure fantasy gimmick packages. Today we got those silly speed boost 34+ kts BBs which outpace, overmatch and often even outspot cruisers all over the place. And hilariously dumb creations like Lenin which also dont give a damn about physics. The Hood is just straight forward without such bs. Its pretty fast but still realistically fast. Has heaps of HP and solid 15 inch guns. Just a good ship naval history enthusiasts can enjoy driving without having to think "Wtf did WG made here again".

Many believe that the killing shot on Hood was under the waterline just below her 12-inch armor plating. It seems more plausible than a shot coming in from above and punching through the deck armor. That's basically the Achilles heel of a battleship or battlecruiser. Hood and Bismarck were around 10 miles, give or take. That's essentially point-blank range for a battleship. At the range they were firing at, it's hard for any of the shells to have a high enough arc to come in as plunging fire. Also, Bismarck's shell wouldn't have penetrated Hood's aft magazine if it made contact with the 5-inch or even the 8-inch strips. The fuse would arm, and the shell would've slowed considerably by hitting the upper armor belt. It would've done considerable damage, but Hood wouldn't have suffered a magazine detonation. The evidence was seen on Prince of Wales after the battle when she was dry-docked for repairs. An 8-inch round from Prinz Eugen penetrated Prince of Wales under the main armor belt below the waterline. The theoretical explanation for a hit like that (thru the deck armor) was for Hood to be heeling in a turn away from Bismarck and thus presenting more deck armor. That's what I remember reading a long while ago and it may have since been discounted. Always like the side-discussions like this though.

@@wheel6243 During the battle, Hood turned to show her starboard broadside to get the rear turrets into the fight. Captain (or is it Admiral?) Holland thought he was close enough to Bismarck that penetration to the Hood's deck armor was impossible.

There is no amount of armour to save from shoddy operation, leaving blast doors open to facilitate faster reloading is a design flaw for sure, but going into action with them in this state was literally gambling and losing bad.

Wouldn't liked if you mentioned the AA butchering a bit more. Not sure if you remember but the DFAA was not a standard DFAA that increased damage by 100% but rather Hood's increased it by 1000% it was only really useful like 3km and in but still. I remember there being a video of a Hood in a testing room taking on 10 Midways and holding it's own. Now, a shadow of it's former self😢

I remember that time! I was one of the idiots back then who actually bought the Admiral Pack for HMS Hood (because I wanted the Atlantic Grey camo plus back then WOWS was a game worth supporting). Those unguided AA rockets on Hood made a 3km dead zone for all planes when DFAA got activated and was a fun gimmick to have on a BB.

She actually had a 305mm belt but it's right st the waterline. Also she has the same ap normalisation as the des moin so she rarely ricochets. I get so many citadels shooting at the nose when other ships think they are angled enough

@@jaywerner8415 it does! I've learnt that shooting angled bbs is where hood is strongest, if you know where to aim. And cruisers explode from all angles even when you shoot at the belt. The only weakness is the penetration

Hood is a great ship. Improved AP bounce angles, reasonably precise guns, fast, very tanky when angled. Short fuses for killing cruisers. Plus great turret angles.

Love the Borodino, it's my second most played ship. There's about 5 people that play it so most players have no idea what it is and what it does, and will let you erase broadsides with impunity.
