She cruised on the 400 H 1st heat and semi-finals. Her poor performance is (I think) due to feeling the pressure of the moment and not executing well the last hurdles. My assessment of this race. Sydney did not get flustered by Bol's presence. She was confident in her own abilities and was laser focused on herself. She had one goal: to better her own record. While Bol on the other hand although a strong contender for Sydney crumbled under the expectations and pressure. If you look at her body language before the race, she was a little flustered. And during the race once Sydney went past her, she panicked and was focused on Sydney rather than her own form. Bol is so much better than this and she knows this. Hence the disappointment in her face, which ultimately led to her breakdown.

@martijn_yt2 ай бұрын
The coach of Femke Bol had said before the race that he expected a winning time in the low 50's, or possibly even sub 50. He told Femke Bol that if she wanted to have any chance of winning, she needed to start faster than she had ever done before and then hope for the best :). Alternatively, she could also play it safe, run her own race and go for an almost certain 2nd place. Bol might however also been a bit overconfident about her chances to beat McLaughlin because of her recent sub 51 race and ofcourse her incredibly fast 400m leg a few days ago. I do however still think it was a courageous decision to go all in with the risk of giving up a almost certain silver medal. Nevertheless, amazing performance from the Queen of the 400m hurdles Sydney McLaughlin as well as number two Anna Cockrell !
@LifeissuesDLY2 ай бұрын
In my opinion, that is very poor coaching advice. Your job as a coach is to create a personalized strategy for your athlete, taking into account her strengths and weaknesses, while also creating scenarios to make your athlete capable of dealing with risk factors during the race. I know that Femke has been working on her first 200 meters for quite some time now, but to suddenly tell her to run her fastest 200 meters because that’s the only way she can beat an opponent is like saying, ‘Forget what we’ve been training for over almost three years and just go follow Sydney.’ That’s very stupid

I think a fascinating question would be how the race would have looked if their lanes were reversed. I think SML would have gone out much harder to make sure she put pressure on her at the beginning. As it was she just had to stay close enough to know she could close the stagger on the second curve and pull away. I actually am a Bol fan but I knew any talk of her winning was delusional. SML is one of those athletes you see maybe 2 or 3 times in your life. She beat the Olympic Champion in the 200m a few months ago and there is no question she would smoke the field in the open 400. Honestly Bol and SML would be the top 2 in that race as well (with SML on top). Bol was not upset because she lost. I think she would have been OK if she came in second close to her personal best. I honestly thought Bol was in trouble in the semis. Cockerell was just a little too close and made her work to finish first.

Femke Bol committed the sin of wanting to immediately follow Sydney McLaughlin, keeping a pace that was too fast for her and going out of revs on the finish line, she paid for her desire to put pressure on Sydney McLaughlin who is unbeatable. Sydney McLaughlin the real phenomenon of these Olympics.

McLaughlin the golden medal, Femke Bol the golden personality. 🧡

Honestly they both have golden personalities in my opinion, although of course I wish Bol didn't underperform to that degree
@Arnhem-NL2 ай бұрын
@@woodpeckerer if Femke Bol would have performed as she can McLaughlin still is the superior runner. There is no doubt she is something special in a historical perspective. There is absolutely no pain in her winning. The greatest are there to be admired not to be hated. I just despise that exaggerated outgoing behavior with a crown. Last EURO’S, Memphis Depay our main striker started to wear a sweatband urban style like a basketballer. The whole nation wanted Koeman to bench him. We are just not the people who appreciate bragging or showing off. It could be cultural because I see a lot of Americans appreciating this.

Throughout the Olympic commentary re: Women’s 400m hurdles, it has been about Femke Bol. They had already given her the Gold medal. Sydney is an exceptional athlete and runs without media hype(she just is). Femke is a World Champion and record holder (indoors) however the biased commentary was biased and annoying (Steve Cram UK commentary amongst others).
