When Sandy sat down with the Cybertruck VPs and lead engineers at Tesla to discuss the Cybertruck they mentioned not everything was 48 volts. IIRC its 48v to major components and local POE control modules and stepped down to 12v out from there to the little stuff. So it shouldn't have 12 volt wiring all throughout but might have local runs to 12 volt components
@BBingo-v5i8 ай бұрын
yeah, but that is just stupid. Just use 800V for major components and 12V for everything else. That is cheaper, safer and actually more capable when you run things like the active suspension from the 800V which is what Porsche did with the latest Taycan facelift. Porsche actively tried to eliminate high voltage to lower voltage converters and use the 800V system architecture as far as possible. Interior lights etc run on a small 12V battery. Nobody needs 48V it is just to cut a couple of bucks for Tesla. The customer has no real world advantage whatsoever
@SyntheticSpy8 ай бұрын
@@BBingo-v5i If the 800v system fails then the 48v system will still be operational for things like steering in an emergency.
@BBingo-v5i8 ай бұрын
@@SyntheticSpy why would the 800V system fail? Also Porsche does not use crappy steer-by-wire since that would destroy the joy of driving, so you can still steer without power. But they do use 800V for the active suspension which is actually awesome engineering. For lights/screen etc you have 12V anyway. No real world advantage for the customer to have 48V. In fact repairs might be more costly and timely to source the parts. And there is also some health risk involved with running switches or interior parts with 48V. Just a cost cutting measurement by Tesla and to further control the vehicle ecosystem.
@davidmenasco57438 ай бұрын
@@BBingo-v5iThe 48v makes it possible to use off the shelf components for Power Over Ethernet. This is important for the electronic architecture. And, between the unique electronic architecture and the 48v distribution to major components, there is a significant reduction in A) weight, and B) cost, and C) quantity of natural resources (copper) required to make the vehicle, in other words, the environmental impact. All of these things affect the customer, but especially the cost and the weight. Even if this vehicle doesn't realize the potential cost savings, future vehicles certainly will.

Awesome tear down, thanks for sharing.... I see one of the most beneficial parts of Fly by wire steering is the ability to export the car to either left or right hand drive markets without having to change anything in the engine bay, firewall etc. The Tesla team made mention that 1 of the 2 front steering motors can handle 60% of the load. So the redundancy will give you the ability to drive normally and vacate the road if there is an issue. But it may not be capable of Dry lock to lock steering while stationary (max load) - Which isn't really a safety concern. The car is running Gigabit ethernet, which is 200x the speed of traditional canbus. Added 48V allows all control to come from one place instead of many different computer boxes. The CT team has revolutionalised MANY components of a truck and car build. Worth a note, the build quality of things like door seals between my original made in California model 3 and my 4 year newer MIC model Y was phenomenal. Anyone who underestimates teslas ability and ambition to improve will be left behind.

Sandy obviously has a reputation, he was originally Teslas biggest critical and slammed them for everything, but I found this video good, it felt like walking through a car with a friend. Early days for this team on KZbin, I think it’s good for them. It’s undeniable that Teslas ability to change the production line for the better has been impressive. No other manufacturer adapts to changes and improvements this fast. What’s mind blowing is the fact that Tesla went from nothing to producing entire factories and new production processes for things like stainless, batteries, electronics, drive trains for the CT. I absolutely forgive them for taking a little longer than promised. What a monumental effort.

@rogerstarkey53908 ай бұрын
"Your Model 3" has 2 "Batteries" . A "12v" battery which performs exactly the same duties as that in an ICE car. Lights Displays, Computers, Low voltage motors, Doors, Etc. . Then it has the "Propulsion pack" which deals with the high loads. . "Propulsion" (obviously) which includes heating, cooling and pumping liquids around itself and the drive system. . Plus, If you're in "Camp mode" you will be using the *propulsion battery* to either obtain existing heat from fluids in it's system, OR Generate new heat by essentially "vibrating" the drive motors to warm fluids (similar to an induction cooktop) then pumping the warmed fluid. . It will also top up the *12v battery* (which was Lead acid in older models, but is now 14-16v(?) Lithium Ion) ..... "Life" There's STILL a misconception that packs have a "LIFE" of "xxxx cycles". . WRONG. The "life" quoted is the *Guaranteed remaining capacity* after "X years" or "Y distance" which would equate to an average of cycles.... Which they quote. . It NOT the "LIFE" of a pack, after which it's toast, good for only recycling. . It's the "Expected time to "X percent capacity". . As in "4,000 expected cycles" to 80(?) percent of "capacity when new" remaining . Guaranteed of 8 years. . You start with 80 kWh/ 330 miles. . After 8 years you're at... 83%(?) . You have ±273 miles ... BUT That's if you charge the pack fully 10 times every week. . Charge once per day, 7 days per week? 4,000/ That's 10.9 years. . ±300 miles per day average, every day for 11 years? . You're going to be more knackered than the battery!! . Now go to a "normal" user. 800 miles per month? Call it 1,000/ month That's 3 charges in 1 month. Call it 4? . 1 per week? 4,000 charges, = 4,000 weeks? . 4,000 / 52= 77 years..... Should be enough? . Now consider the price of cells..... Declining. . It's not going to be an issue for the vast majority.

Very interesting. Seeing 2 grown ups inside that shell really gives you an idea of the gigantic size of the thing. I have no need for something that big but i'd like to see more stainless steel models produced & I'm drooling on the tech in the guts. Thanks for sharing.

i work in automotive and deal with ISO26262 which is the DFMEA he's talking about. I would love to be a fly on the wall on those internal meetings. It's highly complex not only from a system view (whole vehicle) but also to all the sub-components that make up the individual circuits inside all the electronic control units.

So funny to actually see John McElroy positive about Tesla. I stopped paying any attention or reading or watching anything Autoline years ago. Listening toe the old cast CASTING stones at Tesla was a real turn off. It seemed they were actually hoping Tesla would fail. Thank you for finally catching up John and realizing what all of us besides the Autoline crew and the Bob Lutz' of the old guard were so ignorant of. Good Job!!
@aussie_al8 ай бұрын
Same, i can't stand McElroy. I saw a few of the shows you mentioned and couldn't stomach anymore. I remember him and his cast of ignorant, arrogant petrol heads trying to tear Sandy apart but now McElroy comes on as if he's been supportive of Tesla forever. I'm positive that Sandy would have been on the phone to his alleged friend as soon as he found out this show was aired to abuse him for going behind his back.

The noise we hear at the end when demonstrating the steering is pedestrian warning speaker, not the cooling pump because the truck is on drive. When we are near a tesla, it is possible to hear the cooling circuit pump, but the noise is different and not as loud.

The Toyota Hilux is perhaps the only truck truly engineered to actually do really demanding work. For what it is, it's truly remarkable. This new truck from Tesla has yet to prove its real world engineering in the field. Whistling diesel should take this truck for a few tests.

When engineering is done well it creates a whole industry of tear-down. Detroit has never produced anything inspiring to tear down like this. Thanks, Elon, for setting the bar high enough to be worth watching.

Great insights!! And nice to see Sandy Munro has got competition 😉 The benefit of steer by wire is other than the flexibility and new features, is that it is critical for Tesla’s unboxed method that will be used for the next gen affordable model - with scale costs will come down significantly 👌 Only thing missing now is true brake-by-wire, then path is cleared for the next generation manufacturing method. The unboxed method.
@pepeshopping8 ай бұрын
No. A drive by wire system DOES NOT need 48 volts! The motors that move the wheels can use 48 v as they are the high power! The steering wheel controller and circuitry could be ANY low voltage 5-12v as it is ONLY sending data to the motors that do the steering! But once you have 48v available, you may as well have the “feedback” motor be 48v also.

I feel bad because he has hearing aids but the sound he is hearing is not the pumps running, it’s the outside speaker. My model 3 and Y make the same noise with the outside speaker
@DerrickHolloway-pt7tq8 ай бұрын
Sir, you are very wrong the noise heard was indeed the pumps, the pedestrian speaker does not sound until the vehicle is in motion.
@mattaspenrandall97038 ай бұрын
@@DerrickHolloway-pt7tq Do you own a newer tesla? Mine indeed makes noise from the speaker, It is unclear if the truck is in D in the video however, to get the truck to 4 wheel steer it does need to be in D.

@@DerrickHolloway-pt7tqmy 2022 Model 3 Performance makes the noise when stationary, as soon as I put the car in drive, not only when moving - just tested it. That sound at ~21 min is exactly the same simulated sound as my car makes.

I Have had 2 Mazda 929's (HE) and 2 Toyota UZZ32's all of which have 4 wheel steer, the operate via cable over hydraulic in both instances, at 30 KPH they default to opposite steer for lane changes, and low speed for parking in via mode, these cars were built from 1990 till approx 1999, and cost much more then a standard model, but as for drivability I would not drive anything without 4 wheel steer, its great.
